Infant Withdrawal and Nurse Teamwork Dynamics in Neonatal Intensive Care Units

Nurses might cope with challenges associated with caring for withdrawing infants by relying on nurse colleagues for help during a shift. The objective of this study was to examine relationships between caring for an infant experiencing substance withdrawal during a shift and NICU nurse teamwork dynamics.
Methods: This was an observational study using longitudinal data collected as part of a larger study on nurse workload and missed nursing care in NICUs. Data from 259 nurses and 1644 infants in 10 NICUs from April 2021 to May 2023 were included. We measured nurse and infant demographics, whether a nurse was assigned to care for an infant experiencing substance withdrawal during the shift (IV), and four indicators of nurse teamwork dynamics (DVs). Multi-level logistic regression was used to estimate four models examining relationships between caring for an infant experiencing substance withdrawal and nurse teamwork dynamics.
Results: We gathered data from 259 nurses who reported on 1644 infants total throughout the course of the study across 13,222 matched nurse-infant shifts. After controlling for relevant nurse and infant characteristics, nurses assigned to care for at least one infant experiencing withdrawal during a shift was associated with a 24% increase in the likelihood of needing help on that shift (Odds Ratio 1.24; 95% CI: 1.06-1.45), a 26% increase in the likelihood of asking for help on a shift (OR 1.26; 95% CI: 1.08-1.47), a 20% increase in the likelihood of receiving help on a shift (OR 1.2; 95% CI: 1.03-1.4), and a 32% decrease in the likelihood of offering help on a shift (OR 0.68; 95% CI: 0.56-0.81).
Conclusion: Nurses assigned to care for at least one infant experiencing withdrawal during a shift are more likely to need help, ask for help, and receive help, and they are less likely to offer help during a shift. Charge nurses should keep this under consideration when creating nurse assignments at the beginning of a shift.A five-year embargo was granted for this item.Academic Major: Nursin

Implementation of a Violence Risk-Assessment Tool to Reduce Workplace Violence in a Psychiatric Inpatient Unit
Background: Workplace violence towards health care workers on inpatient behavioral health units is a significant and ongoing clinical problem that creates a safety issue for staff and patients. Workplace violence can be reduced by implementing a violence risk assessment tool such as the Dynamic Appraisal of Situational Aggression (DASA).
Purpose: The purpose of this DNP project is to evaluate the implementation of the DASA violence screening tool on an inpatient behavioral health unit for early identification of patients with high risk for violence.
Methods: The project was implemented over a two-month period. The DASA screening tool was used daily to assess patients. The charge nurse and behavioral health nurse educator were involved in the implementation phase. Education and training were provided to nurses via a PowerPoint presentation. A 6-item post-training survey was provided to all the nurses to assess their understanding of the DASA tool. Additionally, a case study was provided to the nurses to assess their ability to use the DASA tool. Lastly, a post-implementation survey measured on a 4-item Likert scale was provided to assess the nurses’ perception of the DASA tool on an inpatient psychiatric unit.
Outcomes: Majority of the nurses (95%) were able to understand the DASA tool, how to implement it, and when to implement it. A total of 1,251 daily DASA screenings were completed. The results revealed a 98.4% completion rate of daily DASA screenings over the two-month period. Daily DASA screening occurred for at least 1 patient 98.4% of the time. Across all days, 82% of patients had a DASA screening completed.
Conclusions: The results of this project demonstrated that majority of nurses believed the DASA tool helped them identify potential of patient aggression, feel safer on the unit, helped guide the use of preventative measures, and helped reduce the risk of patient aggression.A three-year embargo was granted for this item
A closer look at endophytic fungi of Plantago lanceolata
Endophytes are an active area of research, particularly for their ability to aid plant hosts in tolerating a variety of stressors. Plantago lanceolata, a widespread medicinal forb, is host to a diverse range of fungal endophytes. This study assesses a collection of heat and drought tolerant P. lanceolata for their fungal diversity, and feasibility of producing axenic somatic clones from their progeny. Recovered endogenous fungi were phylogenetically diverse, with two strains belonging to distinct lineages of Pyronemataceae. One of these two strains, which was revealed to have a heightened heat tolerance, was the subject of genome sequencing and analyses to better understand its adaptive capacity and ecology. Its heat tolerance, along with a highly expanded repertoire of glucooligosaccharide oxidase (AA7) enzymes – a poorly understood gene family in fungi – this strain represents opportunity for future research to gain insights into how cryptic fungal species might be helping plants thrive in harsh conditions. Be Aware, Be Safe
Be Aware, Be Safe is a campaign opportunity for The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center’s Trauma Department Injury Prevention Program. OSU WexMed Trauma Center is certified as a Level I Trauma Center through the American College of Surgeons, which requires injury prevention outreach, focusing on their top two injuries. Through their Trauma Registry, their top three injuries include: Falls, Motor Vehicle Crashes, and Violence. OSUWMC current methods of outreach include high school educational programs, fall prevention exercise classes, CARTEENS, and pop-up booths at local events. These events have proven to be successful in the past, but through recent research tools including surveys, competitive analysis, and personas solutions were created that would increase the number of people reached. A survey was sent to citizens of Columbus, Ohio via social media including Instagram, Facebook, and personal connection. There were 64 responders. Questions focused on personal experiences and level of fears surrounding the topics. Findings concluded that the injury prevention materials and tools should target ages18-25 and 51-60, that high school safe driving programs impacted numbers of driving while impaired, and that 18–25-year-olds commonly own firearms. Competitors were classified as other Level I Trauma Centers in Central Ohio, including OSU IPP, Ohio Health, Nationwide Children’s, and Ohio State Burn. Findings showed a static approach to outreach and limited technological use. Personas allowed alignment in findings and form the proposed solution.
Be Aware, Be Safe is a campaign that will run through November and introduces OSU’s IPP social media presence, highlighting each of the three top injuries, using BuckeyePaws Therapy Dog, Ashby. Two posts will be made on OSUWexMed accounts per week, one static and one video. Ashby will present three tips on how to reduce injuries. The videos will be under 60 seconds and the static post will include the same tips, using images and collages.
Videos of similar strategy were posted on social media through OSUWexMed accounts and proved to be successful, one reaching over 12,000 viewers. Through this approach, OSU’s IPP will be able to connect with more community members, in hopes of reducing injuries and trauma admissions.No embargoAcademic Major: Visual Communication Desig
Musical Words: Analyzing Adjective Dimensions Using a Musical Stroop Task
The current study examines the effects of interference and musical prosody through a Stroop task. Participants (n = 50) were trained to focus on the presented word or audio recording, using the good/bad adjective contrast; next, participants chose from adjective contrasts (up/down, big/small), using the task from their training phase (word meaning/audio recording) to complete the first test phase. The current study is a within-subject design, so next, participants were trained on the opposite task and then completed the other test phase. A 2 (task) X 2 (congruent/incongruent) repeated measures ANOVA revealed a significant congruency effect for reaction time and accuracy. Results showed faster and more accurate responses for congruent audio recording and word pairings, but there was no difference by task. These results demonstrate a Stroop effect. Results also show that having a musical background had a significant effect on participants' reaction times to the tasks, but did not have an effect on participants’ accuracy on the tasks. There was no interaction between musicianship and congruence for reaction time or accuracy. The current study provides insight into how musical prosody is beneficial when congruent with word meaning.No embargoAcademic Major: Psycholog
First Measurement of Anisotropy with Stellar Intensity Interferometry and Associated Improvements to the VERITAS-SII Analysis
This thesis presents an angular measurement of gamma Cassiopeiae using stellar intensity interferometry (SII) at VERITAS, the first successful measurement of the oblateness and orientation of a star with this technique. Gamma Cas is a rapidly rotating Be type star, spinning near its breakup velocity. Because of its extreme rotation speed, it has an oblate shape and a decretion disk of emitted material near its equator. We measure a major/minor axis ratio of 1.28 +/- 0.04, position angle 116 +/- 4 degrees, and minor axis angular diameter of 0.43 +/- 0.02 mas with a simple analytic uniform ellipse fit. By comparing the data with more complex stellar models, we measure an equatorial diameter of 0.605 (+0.041/-0.034) mas, rotational velocity 98.9 +/- 0.6% of breakup, and position angle 115 +/- 2 degrees. These agree well with expectations. Tolstoy’s Critique of the Superficiality of Russian High Society in Anna Karenina and its Parallels to French Aristocracy and Slavophilism
This thesis explores Leo Tolstoy’s literary critique of the superficiality that enveloped Russian high society during the 1800s, particularly in comparison to the French aristocracy that served as an ideal for Russian society to mimic, contrary to their traditional slavic roots. Evidence is primarily drawn from Tolstoy’s novel Anna Karenina and its cinematic adaptation in the 2012 Joe Wright film. Through a detailed analysis of Tolstoy's characters and examining themes such as societal pressure, responsibility, and the juxtaposition between fabricated city life and the unadorned authenticity of farm life, this thesis explores the nuanced parallels between the two economic classes and the surrounding society. Furthermore, by delving into the complexities of Tolstoy's critique, this paper aims to shed light on the deviation of Russian aristocracy from their Slavic roots and, subsequently, allude to the social impact of the fabricated high-society lifestyle in Tolstoy’s literature. COMPOSITIONAL ANALYSIS OF OLIVINE-HOSTED MELT INCLUSIONS FROM PACAYA VOLCANO, GUATEMALA
Vulcán Pacaya is a basaltic stratovolcano approximately 30km SSW of Guatemala City, Guatemala. Current subsurface processes at Pacaya are not well understood, with little published work in the area and sparse monitoring equipment. By studying the petrology and geochemistry of erupted materials from Vulcán Pacaya, we can better understand subsurface processes and triggers involved in eruptive activity. Tephra samples from 2006, 2010, 2014, 2019 and 2021 collected from various locations surrounding Pacaya volcano were selected for study. Olivine phenocrysts and olivine-hosted melt inclusions analyzed for major elements along transects, in crystal cores, and rims. Olivine compositions show most crystals are normally zoned, with some reverse zoning in 2006 and 2021 eruption samples. Average forsterite compositions show a total range from Fo66 to Fo72 for the eruptions. In 2006, core Fo compositions range from Fo63 to Fo75 within the same thin section, and from Fo65 to Fo71 in 2021. Core compositions in 2014 have a smaller range of Fo74 to Fo76, and core compositions in 2019 range between Fo63 and Fo66 in several thin sections. This larger range of Fo compositions in 2006 and 2021, in addition to crystals with reverse and normal zoning in the same sample, suggest magma mixing just prior to or during the eruptions in these years. Average Fo mol.% has steadily decreased from Fo75 in 1974 to Fo67 in 2021, which indicates increased cooling and magma differentiation over time.
