Interview of Herbert A. Scott by McKenna Dunn and Daisy Roberts
Remote interview.Herbert Scott discusses his time at Ohio State and as a member of the Black Student Union (BSU). This interview was one of 15 conducted by students in English 4567 (Rhetoric and Community Service) to capture as many stories as possible from former Ohio State students associated with the 1968 sit-in at the Administration Building (now Bricker Hall) that led to the arrests of 34 Black students, now known as the “OSU 34.” In addition to recalling the sit-in, Scott, who was a graduate student in Political Science, also discusses his role in the BSU as a “senior counselor” rather than someone on the front lines. In addition, he recalls how the Black student community at Ohio State differed from that at UCLA, where he had earned his undergraduate degree.

Candida albicans confers radiation therapy resistance and is associated with decreased survival in rectal cancer
In the following thesis, we report that Candida species are associated with increased hypoxia and decreased survival in human colorectal tumors. Further, in an immune-competent mouse model of rectal cancer, we show that the oral gavage of Candida albicans causally confers radiation resistance. Additionally, tumors from mice inoculated with C. albicans exhibit altered immune infiltration, metabolism, and cell signaling. To attempt to understand the mechanism of radioresistance, we completed untargeted metabolomics on C. albicans cultured in aerobic and anaerobic conditions and observed increased purine synthesis and intermediates of glycolysis. These findings suggest that the presence of C. albicans within rectal tumors is causally modifying the hypoxic tumor microenvironment, which may play a larger role in decreased therapy response.Pelotonia Undergraduate FellowshipUndergraduate Research ScholarshipNo embargoAcademic Major: Biolog

I was quiet but I was not blind: Jane Austen's Discussion of Politics and the Historical Context of Mansfield Park, Pride and Prejudice, and Persuasion
For many years Jane Austen has been considered apolitical. This thesis aims to demonstrate politics embedded in her works by focusing on three of her novels, Mansfield Park, Pride and Prejudice, and Persuasion. These novels focus on real political issues at the time, including abolition of the slave trade, entailment policies which exclude women from the inheritance of property, and the change of class status, and the improvement of medical understanding after the Napoleonic Wars. In this thesis, I evaluate authorial intent, and comparing the merit of new critical analysis when compared with historicist, feminist, and post-colonial analysis when evaluating the work of a particular author. In doing so, I hope to form rebuttal against the routine dismissal of female authors when discussing works of political and social commentary.No embargoAcademic Major: Englis
To Code-Switch is Harmful, to Not Code-Switch is Detrimental: An Analysis of Black Student Attitudes around AAVE and the use of Code-Switching
This thesis examines the practice of code-switching by Black Americans, particularly with regard to personal attitudes and impressions of the practice. Specifically, this experiment investigates the code-switching of language in and out of African-American Vernacular English (AAVE). The study is focused on impressions of code-switching and seeks to find the origins of its adoption by Black individuals. Code-switching is a familiar but understudied practice that reflects negative social perceptions of Blackness, and the practice itself presents numerous struggles for its users in the forms of social, emotional, and cognitive disadvantages. Using qualitative methods, this study draws on semi-structured interviews with 6 Black undergraduate students who code-switch at least sometimes between Standard English and AAVE. Interview questions were framed around the past & present experiences of these students’ use of code-switching, future projections, and thoughts on the relevant ethical and moral implications. Participants reported adolescent development of the practice as a reaction to agents of socialization as well as parental influence on the decision to code-switch. Furthermore, participants denounced the existence and necessity of code-switching while simultaneously approving of its usage by Black Americans. The data suggest the generational perpetuation of code-switching as a reaction to the institutionalized oppression of Black individuals, and a fundamental opposition to Black expression in our social institutions. Findings reveal the harsh consequences of a familiar yet overlooked phenomenon, suggest motivations for individuals to code-switch, and highlight the ethical ramifications of the prejudice against Black Americans and AAVE.No embargoAcademic Major: Communicatio
Nurse-Driven Endorsement for Ambulatory Cardiac Rehabilitation Following Transcatheter Heart Valve Surgery
Following transcatheter heart valve replacement, cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is an evidence-based recommendation to help promote health and wellbeing and prevent complications, yet it is an underutilized resource. The purpose of this project was to examine whether nurse endorsement of CR increases ambulatory CR enrollment following elective transcatheter heart valve replacement surgery. A new process was implemented for CR nurse liaisons delivering education to transcatheter heart valve replacement surgery patients prior to hospital discharge. Volumes of ambulatory CR referrals and rates of enrollment were measured. There were 17 total referrals and 17.6% enrollments during the 8 weeks of data collection (8 weeks of referrals and 8 weeks for enrollment in CR). These findings demonstrated that education from a CR nurse liaison prior to hospital discharge alone was not enough to increase enrollment in ambulatory CR following transcatheter heart valve surgery. This may be due to a variety of patient-specific barriers like perceived value, access to transportation, schedule availability, etc., which are consistent with the literature. Future studies are needed to better understand the barriers to participating in ambulatory cardiac rehabilitation following transcatheter heart valve replacement. More robust efforts are needed across all phases of care to encourage patients to enroll in cardiac rehabilitation to meet organizational goals and national benchmarks.A five-year embargo was granted for this item

Microstructural Analysis of Natural and Laboratory-Grown Lake Ice
Seasonally ice-covered lakes represent nearly half of all lakes globally and play a major role in processes such as carbon cycling due to their storage and release of methane and carbon dioxide. However, the physical structure of the ice cover itself, particularly the void spaces within it, remains poorly quantified despite its climate and ecological importance because of its ability to store and release gases and solutes. This study aimed to quantify void space distribution in natural (Trout Bog, WI, USA) and laboratory-grown lake ice using X-ray micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and assess the technique’s effectiveness for characterizing porosity and structural imperfections. Ice samples were scanned using a Bruker SkyScan 1173 system, and 3D reconstructions were processed to estimate porosity profiles with depth.
Micro-CT was shown to be an effective method for visualization of void spaces in 3D and for quantifying porosity across ice sections. Natural ice samples exhibited the highest porosity in the uppermost superimposed ice layers and decreased to near zero with depth as congelation ice formed. The laboratory-grown ice exhibited an opposite trend with highest porosity nearest the water-ice boundary. Across all samples, porosity values were low relative to the shallow, methane-rich lakes of the Arctic. These findings suggest a reduced potential for gas retention within Trout Bog ice cover and highlight the influence of lake morphology and freezing conditions on void structure.
