Development of Embedded System for Dome Fuji III Ice Core Drill
Full text linkWe developed an embedded computer and ground monitoring system for the Dome Fuji Deep Ice Coring Project III. The number of slip-ring channels was limited to four. Therefore, a four-channel configuration was used: two channels for the drill motor power supply and two channels with the signal superimposed on the computer power supply. As the motor power line is connected directly from the ground controller to the motor, forward and reverse switching and control of the transmission voltage can be performed without passing through the circuits in the drill. This feature ensures the continuity of drilling operations in the event of drill computer failure. The drill computer consisted of a CPU board, power supply board, power and communication mixing board, sensor board, and backplane. The CPU board and various sensor boards were communicated with by the I2C bus. The information from the multiple sensors was edited by the CPU into 80 bytes per second data frames and transmitted to the ground using a Bell 202 standard FSK signal (1200 bps). On the ground, the transmitted data frames were decomposed by a monitoring program built on LabVIEWⓇ for centralized monitoring and control of the drill motor system, as well as the winch system and motor transmission system, which are ground facilities. The absolute orientation of the drill can be calculated in real-time from the geomagnetic and gravity information in the calibrated enclosure. In June 2024, the system underwent motor noise immunity and low-temperature tests. The system was then operated for drilling at the dome base, which commenced in December 2024.
