    Redesigning cybersecurity awareness-raising and training programs: insights from professionals on knowledge, skills and educational practices

    Purpose This study aims to examine the perceptions of cybersecurity professionals in order to extract key recommendations for designing effective and impactful security education, training, and awareness (SETA) programs. These programs are intended to address the diverse needs of learners with non-technical backgrounds, as well as IT professionals pursuing specialized training for re/upskilling. Design/methodology/approach A survey-based research approach was applied, including both closed and open-ended questions exploring the perceptions of cybersecurity professionals on important aspects pertinent to the design of cybersecurity awareness-raising and specialized training programs, including key knowledge areas and skills, prominent ENISA European cybersecurity skills framework (ECSF) roles, the importance of cyber ranges and key pedagogical considerations. Findings The study results suggest that, to be effective, SETA programs must be audience-centric and that the teams responsible for designing them must combine technical expertise, knowledge and skills such as understanding cyber threats, implementing security technologies and incident management, with transferable skills, including communication and adaptability. These findings highlight that SETA teams must include roles with strong technical competencies and pedagogical understanding alike. Originality/value The novelty of this study lies in its focus on differentiating SETA programs based on the unique needs of two diverse learner groups, emphasizing the cybersecurity roles, knowledge, skills and pedagogical factors that are important for redesigning awareness-raising and training programs, ultimately leading to a sustainable cybersecurity culture

    Drawing the Artist: the Advantage of Artistic Ability for the Construction of Holistic Facial-Composite Images.

    Purpose Building on Valentine’s (1991) face space theory and evidence suggesting artists possess superior internal-feature encoding (e.g. Devue and Barsics, 2016; Kozbelt et al., 2010), this study aims to investigate whether such an advantage would improve the construction of forensic facial composites. Design/methodology/approach Artists and non-artists described a previously-seen unfamiliar face using a cognitive interview and then constructed a composite of it using one of the holistic facial-composite systems, EvoFIT. The effectiveness of the composites was assessed by asking participants who were familiar with the target identities to name the composites; we also asked further participants to rate the composites for likeness. Furthermore, descriptive terms of the face provided by constructors during the cognitive interview were also analysed. Findings Artist-generated composites were named significantly more often and rated significantly higher for likeness than non-artist composites, despite artists using significantly fewer descriptive terms, supporting a link between perceptual expertise and enhanced composite performance. Practical implications of the research are discussed. Research limitations/implications Although Vogt and Magnussen (2007) proposed that artists scan images more broadly and encode abstract features, this was not directly tested here; nonetheless, the higher likeness scores suggest artists retained more diagnostic visual information. The focus on internal facial features, observed in prior studies (Bruce et al., 1999; Ellis et al., 1979; Kozbet et al., 2010), may account for enhanced recognisability, whereas the ability to flexibly shift between local and global perceptual strategies (Chamberlain and Wagemans, 2015) likely underpins both improved naming and likeness outcomes. Practical implications Artists used fewer descriptive units in their H-CIs, yet their composites achieved higher recognition and likeness scores. This indicates that detailed verbal articulation may not reflect the depth or quality of visual encoding; it may also be the case that artists create a more compact encoding, a suggestion that would be worthy of further investigation. Originality/value These findings also hold practical utility for law enforcement, underscoring that visual perceptual skill, rather than the volume of verbal descriptors, may be a stronger predictor of composite recognisability. Accordingly, practitioners should avoid assuming that limited verbal detail reflects poor facial recall. Instead, they should acknowledge that witnesses capable of compact yet accurate visual encoding may produce highly effective composites, even when verbal output is minimal. These insights support a more nuanced, evidence-informed approach to witness assessment, composite scheduling and practitioner training within investigative environments

    Exploratory Physical Education teachers' perspectives and intentions to use VR in the classroom context: A Cross-Sectional Qualitative Study

    Introduction: This study explored the potential role of emerging technologies, particularly active Virtual Reality (VR), from a Physical Education (PE) teacher’s perspective. VR technologies, which provide three-dimensional (immersive) simulation environments, have become more accessible and cost-effective in recent years. Using this technology to train students in various PE areas may add value. Objectives: The study aimed to understand PE teachers’ knowledge of VR and their expectations for teaching PE using VR in classroom settings. Specifically, we explored the experiences, challenges, and potential benefits perceived by PE teachers across four European countries. Participants: Thirty-eight PE teachers from Portugal, Belgium, Italy, and Cyprus participated voluntarily. Design: This qualitative study employed a phenomenological approach. Data were collected between March and May 2024 in public and private secondary schools with ethical approval. Methods: Data was gathered through open-ended focus group questions and analysed using a thematic analysis approach. Results: Responses revealed varied experience levels with VR. Most participants expressed a willingness to use VR in PE, showing enthusiasm for new technologies and cautious optimism about integration. While recognizing its potential, respondents highlighted limitations. Technical barriers included Internet issues, limited technical skills, and lack of IT support. These reflect the challenges of implementing VR in schools. Teachers valued VR’s potential to expose students to otherwise inaccessible sports and activities. They also discussed its use for improving specific skills, such as first aid, game tactics, and individual sports techniques. Conclusion: Integrating VR into PE presents both challenges and opportunities. Addressing training, financial, and logistical issues may enhance student engagement and learning outcomes

Unlike past research that treats gaming as a uniform activity, this project examines genre-specific effects, alongside emotional engagement, heart rate, and gender differences. Using a 10-week pre–post test design, participants will play genre-based games and complete cognitive assessments, physiological monitoring, and experience questionnaires. Findings aim to reveal how different types of gameplay impact cognition and emotional states, offering insights for educational, therapeutic, and ethical game design, while advancing research on individual responses to digital media

    Does Economic Policy Uncertainty Reshape Electricity Production in Pakistan? Evidence from an Asymmetric Analysis

    Electricity is important for industrial growth and country development. Pakistan’s ongoing electricity crises, high fuel bills and continuous economic and political instability make it more vulnerable to economic policy uncertainty (EPU). Understanding the critical role of fluctuation in the economic policy and macroeconomic indicators in electricity generation is critical for policymakers and investors. Therefore, this study separately analyzes this relationship between renewable and non-renewable electricity production. The outcome of this study indicates that in periods of high policy fluctuation, Pakistan uses diesel-based electricity for its energy demand. In periods of economic stability and policy certainty, Pakistan produces more electricity from renewable sources like solar panels. Furthermore, this study highlights the critical role of exchange rates and inflation in altering electricity generation decisions. This study offers important policies focusing on economic stability, reforms and investment-friendly policies

    Detection of Mineral Oil Aging by Free Space Transmission Measurements with Microstrip Patch Antennas

    In this paper, a non-invasive electromagnetic method using free-space transmission measurements with patch antennas is presented as a promising approach for real-time detection of dielectric property variations induced by oil aging. This measurement technique eliminates the need to extract oil samples and transport them to a laboratory for chemical analysis, allowing the oil condition to be assessed directly in situ. As such, it represents a significant advancement toward the development of smart, integrated oil condition monitoring systems for industrial and energy infrastructures
