Singing One’s Life: Biopics of Edith Piaf and Dalida

    Get PDF
This article compares two films about French singing stars: La Môme (La Vie en Rose , 2007), directed by Olivier Dahan and Dalida (2016), directed by Lisa Azuelos, respectively about Edith Piaf and Dalida. It argues that Dahan in La Vie en Rose attempted to make a feminist biopic, which recognizes that a famous woman can live mostly for her art or even equate her life with her art. This does not necessarily mean that such a woman, Piaf in this case, is unable to love passionately, but rather that there is no competition between her romantic and professional personas. Piaf's talent for singing is also presented as a protection against external tragedies and as a source of meaning in her life. By contrast, Azuelos, in a more traditional fashion, plays up the contrast between the successful professional life of Dalida and her unhappy personal life, suggesting that if Dalida chose a different profession, she could be happier

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE MANDATORY ADOPTION OF INTERNAL CONTROL REGULATION AND EARNINGS MANAGEMENT: EVIDENCE FROM CHINA

    Get PDF
This thesis focuses on an investigation of the relationship between the mandatory adoption of internal control regulation and earnings management in Chinese listed firms, using data between 2007 and 2016. We used accrual earnings management (AEM_DA) as the main proxy for earnings management. After controlling for firm characteristics, and corporate governance variables, the findings indicate that the mandatory adoption of internal control regulation was significantly and negatively associated with earnings management. To check the robustness of the results, we examine whether the mandatory adoption of internal control regulation had a similar impact on three measures of real earnings management. They are: (i) abnormal cash flow from operations (REM_CFO), (ii) abnormal discretionary expenses (REM_DISX), and (iii) abnormal production costs (REM_PROD). The results show that the impact of mandatory adoption of internal control regulation was generally consistent across all forms of earnings management. However, it had more effect on accrual earnings management than real earnings management. In particular, we found that it had limited effects on constraining real earnings management by manipulating production activities. We also used the propensity score matching (PSM) method to confirm the robustness of our findings. As one of the pioneering studies on the Chinese internal regulatory environment, this thesis contributes to studies on the effectiveness of internal control regulation on the quality of financial information

Race, ethnicity and culture: Addressing inequality in access to healthcare for people with Intellectual Disability

    Get PDF
What is the problem, issue or question that the Round Table will address? In addition to disparities faced by people with intellectual disability compared to the general population, further inequalities exists for people from ethnic minorities in rates of mental and physical health problems. People with a learning disability from ethnic minority backgrounds experience poorer access and experiences of healthcare services and poorer health outcomes. This round table discussion provided an opportunity to formulate an international perspective on the challenges of gathering data, analysis, informing policy and developing reasonable adjustments for providing care for minority groups with an aim to develop a consensus and guidance. Presentations will outline the current models of care, disease prevalence, known barriers and facilitators to health care and interventions to improve outcomes. Evidence from a study in England will outline the approach taken to explore inequality at a national level

The effect of different inclination degrees on the neuromuscular activation of the clavicular head of the Pectoralis Major muscle performed on a barbell incline bench press

    No full text
Twenty young males volunteered to complete 8 repetitions with 60% of 1RM of barbell incline bench press at 20°, 32°, and 43° degrees (Fig. 1). The root mean square (RMS) at 20° (0.59 ± 0.29 [mV]) was statistically significant lower compared to 32° (0.64 ± 0.32 [mV], p = 0.033) and 43° (0.66 ± 0.33 [mV]) (p = 0.009). At the same time, at 43° the root mean square [mV] was higher compared to 32°, however no statistically significant difference was found (p = 0.785)

MCSI Speaker Series: The Idea of Waste

    No full text
As part of the Munro Centre for Social Inquiry (MCSI) 2024 Lecture Series, at Pitzer College, Claremont, California, John Scanlan explores what waste is and why it seems to be intrinsic to human life, at every turn, in every age and epoch. John Scanlan’s talk starts with the premise that waste is inevitable in human society—and ends with a meditation on its inevitability. The Idea of Waste explores how we have grappled with both the material reality and the specter of this shapeshifting phenomenon throughout history—utilizing it, dreaming of overcoming it, yet never escaping it. Scanlan explores what waste is and why it seems to be intrinsic to human life, at every turn, in every age and epoch. Finally, he demonstrates how waste never disappears, but rather only proliferates anew. Scanlan’s compelling narrative shows waste to be both an enduring material consequence of human activity and an idea or state of being

Key Processes And People In Rehabilitation Technology Adoption: A Qualitative Interview Study

    No full text
Background: Despite promise to improve outcomes for patients, many technologies are not sustainably adopted into clinical practice. Adoption of technologies into stroke rehabilitation can be particularly challenging because there are multiple users (patients, carers and clinicians) with varying impairments and digital literacy. This qualitative study explored the factors that influence the adoption of technologies into rehabilitation to highlight the key processes and people in the adoption process. Method: Stakeholders in NHS rehabilitation services were interviewed using schedules based on normalisation process theory. Participants included: service users, clinicians, service managers, project and innovation leads, information technologists and digital developers. Transcribed interviews were analysed using constant comparison. Results: 32 individuals from 13 UK NHS sites, five service users and eight digital developers participated. NHS sites had adopted a range of technologies, most commonly apps (5|13), sensors with an app (4|13), online group therapy (4|13) and video consultations (2|13). Technology adoption took considerable time and required knowledge of a variety of local processes and stakeholders. Processes included funding and procurement, fulfilling operational demands, resource planning and staff training and support. Early engagement with key stakeholders was perceived to positively influence adoption; these included the clinical team, information technologists, managers and technology support. Conclusions: Early engagement with stakeholders and knowledge of local processes appeared important influencers of technology adoption; adoption processes were often unclear, took time, and required resilience and motivation from adopters. Our research aims to develop a framework and practical resources to support timely and successful rehabilitation technology adoption into stroke rehabilitation

RUDOLF BARSHAI — INTERPRETER OF SYMPHONIC WORKS IN EPISTOLARY LEGACY. FOR THE 100th ANNIVERSARY OF HIS BIRTH DIVISI OR NON-DIVISI.

This article is dedicated to the epistolary legacy of Rudolf Borisovich Barshai, an outstanding violist, conductor and composer-orchestrator of the second half of the twentieth century. The article «Divisi or non divisi» of the second half of the 1990s, published here for the first time in its original language, is the result of many years of painstaking work by Rudolf Barshai, covering at least half a century of intensive concert activity with many of the world's leading orchestras on almost all continents of the globe. Life surrounded by music and life in music, the highest level of dedication in tireless creative self-development and exploration, as well as the fidelity to the musical text and careful attitude to the smallest details of Urtext — these are the distinctive features of Barshai, preserved both in his correspondence and in hundreds of his audio recordings. Weinberg wrote about the true creative joy for composers when Barshai took on the performances of their works. A devoted interpreter of Shostakovich, Lokshin, Mahler, Beethoven and many other composers on concert stages, Barshai appears as an interesting, fascinating and erudite writer who is thoroughly knowledgeable of musical literature. He inspires the reader to think with a vision for further perfection

Beadlet anemone: A novel bio-indicator of microplastic pollution in the marine environment

    No full text
Extensive usage of plastic in different industries and household usage has degraded to microplastic due to environmental conditions over the last year. While several researchers conducted the determination of microplastic (MP) bioaccumulation from rivers to stormwater, except for some filter-feeding species used as a bioindicator, to achieve a holistic approach to the fate of MPs in the marine system, sea anemone was used as an indicator. Microplastics were extracted from surface seawater, sediment, and sea anemones from the same sampling area and characterized. The extracted MPs were confirmed by confocal micro-Raman spectroscopy, and the morphology of the MPs was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the accumulation of microplastics and the type of polymer, shape, colour, and size of these persistent pollutants varied in sediment, surface water, and sea anemone. The abundance of MPs was different, and grey-coloured MPs were detected at a relatively higher level in sea anemones, from 8.7 to 13.3%, and more minor MPs (less than 0.5 mm) at 43.4–56.8% were detected in sea anemones among the sampling stations. In terms of polymer type, there are relatively more types of polymers classified in sea anemones among the sampling stations (six different types of polymers). These results indicated that the utilization of sea anemones as a bioindicator for MPs could be a critical factor in a better understanding of their pathway in the marine ecosystem. This study proved that analysing sea anemones as an indicator could offer a reliable, fast, and time-saving approach for detecting microplastic accumulation in marine systems
