    The creativity of Grigori Frid and Alexander Vustin is largely converged, not only due to the deep mutual respect of the teacher-student and close friendship over the years, but also due to the multidimensionality of hearing musical lines, the distinctiveness of the composer’s vision of several perspectives, the fragility of the lyrics and the tear of drama, the unusual combinations of timbre colours and performing technique, in particular, on stringed instruments, revealing new sound possibilities and techniques that lead beyond the boundaries of the familiar, well-trodden. In Three Pieces for violin, viola and cello (1999-2012) by Alexander Vustin, this manifests in singing (with simultaneous playing on instruments) of the string players of texts on the poems of Alexander Pushkin and Olga Sedakova, which are not an accompaniment or external decoration, but an equal line forming musical fabric and drama. In the remarkably heartfelt work In Memory of Grigori Frid for viola and piano (2014), by Alexander Vustin, it is an exit into the transcendental, non-worldly dimension in a monologue-address to the departed. In the Sonata for viola and piano No. 2 (Phaedra) op. 78 (1985) by Grigori Frid it is the influence of the composer's pictorial skill and the origins of the music itself, originating in the theatrical performance-drama. The cycle by Alexander Vustin Songs for Voices and Orchestra (1995-2017) rises above and beyond the expected format of orchestral miniatures to become large-scale expressive canvases. The discussion on these topics is based on the collaborations of the author of the chapter with composers, in the preparation of the recording of world premieres of these works on the Toccata Classics label and concert performances

    The Role of Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids in Patients with Metabolic Syndrome and Endothelial Dysfunction

    Background and Objectives: Metabolic syndrome (MS) represents several diseases encompassing a heterogeneous group of biochemical and physiological abnormalities characterized by structural and functional alterations in the myocardium, including the endothelium of the coronary arteries. MS also affects a substantial portion of the global population. Understanding the risk factors, the development and treatment associated with MS are of paramount importance for early identification, treatment and prevention. This study was designed to evaluate the role of the supplementation of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) on endothelial function in patients with MS. Materials and Methods: A total of 80 patients with MS were enrolled in two groups. The study evaluated endothelial function (EF) in subjects before and after a three-month treatment with n-3 PUFAs in a dose of 2.4 g daily (800 mg, three times a day) vs. placebo, using an Endo-PAT2000 device (Itamar Medical Ltd., Caesarea, Israel) measuring the reactive hyperemia index (a parameter of EF) and augmentation index (a parameter of arterial stiffness). Plasmatic levels of glutathione peroxidase, homocysteine, apolipoprotein B and lipoprotein were also evaluated for comparison. Results: The results showed that the average value of reactive hyperemia index before the treatment with n-3 PUFAs was 1.62 ± 0.42, compared to 1.96 ± 0.62 at the end of the study (p < 0.005). The augmentation index changed from 14.66 ± 19.55 to 9.21 ± 15.64 after the treatment (p = 0.003) with n-3 PUFA. The results also revealed a statistically significant decrease in apolipoprotein B (0.94 ± 0.36 vs. 1.13 ± 0.35, p = 0.001) and homocysteine (19.31 ± 5.29 vs. 13.78 ± 3.05, p = 0.001) and an increase in glutathione peroxidase plasma levels (41.65 ± 8.90 vs. 45.20 ± 8.01), p = 0.001. Conclusions: The results of this prospective study showed a significant improvement in EF in subjects with MS treated with n-3 PUFAs in a dose of 2.4 g daily

    How to scout… or rather, how not to scout in professional football: Advice from an outsider looking in.

    This research delves into the murky underworld of football scouting, highlighting the challenges that scouts face, including the need to be decisive and work alone, whilst craving collaboration in an ambiguous, unprofessional industry. The study emphasises the idiosyncratic nature of scouting, where scouts can interpret the same game differently based on their personal experiences set against differing club priorities. The methodology adopts a phenomenological approach, using ethnographic observation and semistructured interviews to gather insights to the world of football scouting. The research also employs a first-person narrative, with the lead author reflecting on their experiences in the scouting world as they move from being an insider to an outsider to this otherwise private world. This dual perspective enriches the analysis, combining personal reflection with empirical data. The story called The Outsider demonstrates the acquired habitus of scouts and football personnel more generally, concerning the decisions scouts make about players as well as the loneliness of the faceless, nameless scout. The research concludes with the 10 Commandments of Scouting, derived from primary data, offering guidance on ‘how not to scout’. By blending theoretical insights with real-world experiences, this study provides a comprehensive understanding of the complexities of football scouting and suggests strategies for improvement

    What Works in reducing intimate partner violence recidivism

    Violence toward an intimate or ex-intimate partner has been referred to as domestic violence and/or abuse. This chapter sets out to explore how traditional explanations of IPV fit the evidence-based literature and guide interventions that aim to reduce recidivism. In doing so, it highlights the gender-inclusive and bi-directional nature of intimate partner violence (IPV) and the complexities that need to be considered to inform treatment design. Next, the chapter describes how feminist theory, which has driven the design of commonly used interventions, is not compatible with the evidence and has poor outcomes in terms of preventing recidivism. Throughout this chapter, the wider term IPV Intervention Programmes (IIPs) will be used to capture all IPV interventions that are conducted with men who have perpetrated any form of IPV. The chapter also concentrates on research on the efficacy of IIPs in reducing men's recidivism

    Submillimeter-wavelength Polarimetry of IRC+10216

    We present SCUBA-2/POL-2 850 μm polarimetric observations of the circumstellar envelope (CSE) of the carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star IRC+10216. Both FIR and optical polarization data indicate grains aligned with their long axis in the radial direction relative to the central star. The 850 μm polarization does not show this simple structure. The 850 μm data are indicative, albeit not conclusive, of a magnetic dipole geometry. Assuming such a simple dipole geometry, the resulting 850 μm polarization geometry is consistent with both Zeeman observations and small-scale structure in the CSE. While there is significant spectral line polarization contained within the SCUBA-2 850 μm pass-band for the source, it is unlikely that our broadband polarization results are dominated by line polarization. To explain the required grain alignment, grain mineralogy effects, due to either fossil silicate grains from the earlier oxygen-rich AGB phase of the star, or due to the incorporation of ferromagnetic inclusions in the largest grains, may play a role. We argue that the most likely explanation is due to a new alignment mechanism \citep{arXiv:2009.11304} wherein a charged grain, moving relative to the magnetic field, precesses around the induced electric field and therefore aligns with the magnetic field. This mechanism is particularly attractive as the optical, FIR, and sub-mm wave polarization of the carbon dust can then be explained in a consistent way, differing simply due to the charge state of the grains

    Rooms: Modeling Migrancy in the Context of Berlin

    Within research, design and architecture, scale models can create worlds of proposition, speculation and fiction. This paper, however, situates the model as a tool for observation, documentation and engagement; a slow, durational method that manifests a deep participation in the lives of place and people marginalised by wider society. “Rooms” was an artistic and research project undertaken as part of the Urban Nation artistic residency in Berlin which looked at the Romanian immigrant community inhabiting the city, the spaces they occupy and appropriate, and the objects that they surround themselves with. These instances were drawn, surveyed, documented and then painstakingly recreated through 1:20 paper models, which were presented as part of a group exhibition. For border-crossers in particular, the nostalgic association with native objects and artefacts can represent an inner, self-created intangible border, expressing the liminal identity associated with migrancy. This connection with objects found at the domestic scale is also to be found at the urban scale, where the Romanian Shop acts not only as the main hub for the Romanian diaspora in the city, but it is also the repository for the containment and consumption of memory. Built to an extreme level of detail this model of an everyday space visualises, offers new insight, and gives a sense of value and recognition to the lived realities of individuals and communities ignored or disdained. A situated mode of research, the dedication to this form of representation transforms the seemingly mundane into an object of beauty and atmosphere, encouraging access and participation from the participant, maker and the viewer

    Cardiotocogram Data Analysis for Obstetric Risk Stratification

    In order to improve obstetric risk categorization, this study employs a thorough machine learning approach that makes use of cardiotocogram data. The goal is to find patterns and correlations that are relevant for forecasting fetal well-being by evaluating a dataset that includes several fetal health indicators, such as baseline fetal heart rates, uterine contractions, fetal movements, and decelerations. To lay the groundwork for feature selection and model construction, the authors conducted exploratory data analysis, which yielded important insights into the distributions and correlations of these clinical variables. The authors provide a predictive model for foetal health status classification that makes use of state-of-the-art machine learning methods. With this approach, they can better comprehend fetal distress signals and make more informed clinical decisions, which in turn can help reduce rates of neonatal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. The revolutionary effect of machine learning on improving healthcare efficiency and patient outcomes is highlighted by the results, which stress the need of incorporating data-driven methods into obstetric care

    Development of a Vision-based Monitoring System for Quality Assessment of 3D Printing

    Additive Manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, is a process of manufacturing parts and components by adding successive layers of material on top of each other until the final shape is achieved. The research target of this project is Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF), which is a specific type of Additive Manufacturing technology. FFF uses a filament of thermoplastic material, which is melted and extruded, then deposited layer by layer to create a 3D object. However, FFF has some limitations that need to be considered. For instance, the printing process can be time-consuming, and errors such as misalignment and incorrect slicing can occur, leading to complete failure and wasted time and material. This thesis presents a vision-based monitoring system for FFF 3D printing quality assessment. The proposed system includes a simulation tool that generates simulated images of printed layers, along with feature extraction methods for assessing the size, shape and infill density of printed objects. The proposed system utilizes background subtraction for isolating the printed object from the background and estimating its size through pixel length analysis and bounding box calculation. The shape analysis of the printed objects is performed using the Fourier-Mellin transform (FMT) method. Moreover, the infill density is computed by combining foreground extraction and image thresholding methods, utilizing both camera and simulated images. The proposed system is able to analyse and examine the quality of 3D printing during the printing process and identify the defective printed object when deviates of 5 percent is detected in terms of the size, shape, and density of the printed object, alert the user to terminate the entire process and save time and cost. This new monitoring system provides an effective solution to improve the quality and efficiency of FFF 3D printing
