Exploring Near Death Experiences with Children Post Intensive Care: A case series
Near death experiences (NDEs) can occur during life-threatening events. In this article, we present preliminary findings from a case study series. We highlight experiences from participants that are synchronous with the basic elements of near death experiences (NDEs) and discuss how children describe their own experiences. Children reported unsolicited NDE type experiences that included out of body experiences, bright lights, bedside visions, bi-location and visiting celestial places. The aim of the article is to show that children are an important research population for the study of near-death experiences. Children's near-death experiences are simple and carry transcendental features such as a peaceful darkness, a knowing awareness and time alterations. Children assign a subjective reality to their near-death experiences. Younger children may demonstrate a visual NDE semiosis which warrants further investigation. The aim of the article is to demonstrate the value for involving children in NDE research through participatory and creative research methods
The Psychology of Honor Abuse, Violence, and Killings
This important book provides a much-needed exploration and examination of "honor" abuse, violence, and killings from a psychological perspective. Written by a leading authority on the subject, the book draws on a wide range of research and theory on victims and perpetrators to bridge the gap between research and practice.
Presented in two parts, the book begins with a focus on teaching, research, and practice issues in forensic psychology and related criminal justice fields, integral to studying and working with victims and perpetrators of "honor" abuse, violence, and killing. The second part provides an overview of the main issues relevant to the psychology of honor abuse, violence, and killings. These include definitions, prevalence, crime characteristics, victims, and perpetrators. The final chapter presents a new explanatory three-phase model of "honor"-based abuse perpetration. Firsthand personal accounts and detailed cases studies are interwoven throughout, giving a voice to victims and bringing their real-life stories to the forefront.
As the first psychologically based book to synthesize existing and new knowledge on "honor" abuse, the book is a must-read for anyone working with victims and/or perpetrators of "honor" abuse and domestic violence, including criminal justice professionals, mental health practitioners, policymakers, support agencies, emergency workers, and activists. It is also relevant for any students or researchers of gender-based violence and racially minoritized communities
Comparison of running and accelerometry variables based on match outcome, match location and quality of opponent in elite professional soccer players. A five-season study
The aim of this study was to compare external match load, according to match outcome, match location, and opponent quality across five competitive seasons. Forty-six professional outfield soccer players from the same English Premier League club across the complete 2018/19 to 2022/23 seasons were involved in the study. For each match, the outcome (win, draw, loss), match location (home, away) and quality of opponent (top or bottom six teams, remaining mid-table teams) were recorded. Players covered significantly more m/min and performed more decelerations when playing against the top six compared to mid-table or bottom six teams (p < 0.001; d = 0.213-0.322). There were no differences in external match load depending on match outcome. There were significant opponent × outcome × match location interactions for each position across most of the external match load measures, but these differed in magnitude for specific metrics and positions (p = 0.001-0.048; d = 0.300-1.741). The present study provided novel information on external match load and the influence of match outcome, match location and opponent quality. This may support and contribute to understanding how to improve training methods to physically prepare players to cope with varying contexts
Multi-disciplinary Teams in High Performance Sport, The What and The How: A Utopian View or a Darker Reality
High performance sport practitioners work as part of a cross-functional team of experts to deliver effective service to coaches and athletes. While practitioners’ technical skills are highly coveted, their ability to work within a team of experts from different disciplines is poorly understood and researched in sporting contexts. Success or failure of practitioners is often the by-product of their ability to integrate into the team and maintain relationships under high pressure and in challenging environments. The objective of this study was to explore how practitioners work as part of multi-disciplinary teams (MDT) in high performance sport. Twenty-eight practitioners from different professional disciplines and sporting organizations attended five separate, virtually hosted focus groups where the researcher and participants shared their views, beliefs, and perspectives about how they approach, and what they think about when working, in MDTs. Responses were analyzed using a qualitative reflexive thematic approach, and a thematic map and four themes were identified to depict what MDTs do and how they operate. The four domain topics (the “what”) were (1) Decision Making & Problem Solving; (2) Collaboration & Knowledge Sharing; (3) Interpersonal Skills & Development and (4), Leadership & Team Dynamics. The four themes for how practitioners operate (the lubricants of successful MDT working) were (1) Cognitive diversity is important but not if it slows us down, (2) Staying in your lane is encouraged however sharing and collaboration is important (3), We need psychological safety, however poor behavior keeps getting in the way, and (4) High confidence in a world of nuance and uncertainty; adaptability and context is key. The thematic map presents an idealized perspective of how practitioners’ function within MDTs in high-performance sport. This utopian view contrasts with the reality that practitioners face. Their frustrations, challenges, and reflections stemming from failures paint a darker picture of their experiences, highlighting the complexities inherent in their work and flagging considerations for both practitioners and leaders
The Role of Place Image in the Decline and Rejuvenation of Traditional Seaside Resorts
This chapter considers the interplay between place image, class and the Tourism Area Life Cycle Model (Butler 1980) at traditional English seaside resorts, looking at how these places are symbolically represented in society and the media. These resorts, especially the more working-class ones, slipped down the Leisure Spaces Hierarchy to represent poor taste (Urry 1995a). Place image impacted the fortunes of these areas as they moved through the lifecycle stages of stagnation and decline; it seems set to do the same as they face rejuvenation and potential transformation
South Korea’s Challenges and Opportunities in the Indo-Pacific Economic Security
The Indo-Pacific trade routes host a large amount of the sources’ countries of the EU’s imports of raw materials and resources and enable the transport of substantial amounts of South Korea’s energy imports. Being both major actors in the region, South Korea and the EU need to ensure that access to the Indo-Pacific trade routes and their strategic chokepoints remain open and safe. With the expansion of China’s trade influence in the Indo-Pacific region, countries like South Korea tend to see both challenges, such as heavy dependency on China, and opportunities like coupling with partners in Europe. Upon this, South Korea and the EU are in a position to advance their Indo-Pacific strategies jointly and more effectively, especially to address China’s assertiveness in the region and prevent it from jeopardising trade routes
Turning Adversity into a Bottle of Wine: Black Women Wine Industry Entrepreneurs and Capital
This study explores how and why black women entrepreneurs convert their available and accessible economic, cultural, social, and symbolic capital in the South African wine industry. Drawing on Bourdieu’s theory of practice as a theoretical framework, particularly the concept of capital, this study frames such conversion as a process of transforming one capital form to another. Relying on a qualitative approach, and using in-depth semi-structured interviews, this study delved into the lived experiences of nine black women wine industry entrepreneurs in South Africa. Data were supplemented with observations and associated secondary materials and were inductively analysed using the constant comparative technique. The study uncovers that the capital conversion process is habitual, that is a natural undertaking, and accentuates the overlapping and convertibility essences of various capital forms. Moreover, it reveals that black women wine industry entrepreneurs may not give utmost preponderance to economic capital, and that economic capital conversion forms a part of a broader capital conversion process. This study shows that black women entrepreneurs should not be discouraged from starting viable enterprises simply because of insufficient funds (economic capital). Rather, they should leverage on other different non-economic capital forms to counteract the lack of money. The value of this study bears on the emphasis that both the value and conversion rates of each species of capital may differ, and for black women entrepreneurs particularly in the wine industry, economic capital may not be accorded utmost preponderance
SHARP -- A near-IR multi-mode spectrograph conceived for MORFEO@ELT
The Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs), thanks to their large apertures and cutting-edge Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics (MCAO) systems, promise to deliver sharper and deeper data even than the JWST. SHARP is a concept study for a near-IR (0.95-2.45 μm) spectrograph conceived to fully exploit the collecting area and the angular resolution of the upcoming generation of ELTs. In particular, SHARP is designed for the 2nd port of MORFEO@ELT. Composed of a Multi-Object Spectrograph, NEXUS, and a multi-Integral Field Unit, VESPER, MORFEO-SHARP will deliver high angular (∼30 mas) and spectral (R≃300, 2000, 6000, 17000) resolution, outperforming NIRSpec@JWST (100 mas). SHARP will enable studies of the nearby Universe and the early Universe in unprecedented detail. NEXUS is fed by a configurable slit system deploying up to 30 slits with ∼2.4 arcsec length and adjustable width, over a field of about 1.2"×1.2" (35 mas/pix). Each slit is fed by an inversion prism able to rotate by an arbitrary angle the field that can be seen by the slit. VESPER is composed of 12 probes of 1.7"×1.5" each (spaxel 31 mas) probing a field 24"×70". SHARP is conceived to exploit the ELTs apertures reaching the faintest flux and the sharpest angular resolution by joining the sensitivity of NEXUS and the high spatial sampling of VESPER to MORFEO capabilities. This article provides an overview of the scientific design drivers, their solutions, and the resulting optical design of the instrument achieving the required optical performance
Color Use and Psychological Feeling in Modern Interior Design - Based on Emotional Calculation Perspective
In this paper, the HSV color space model is used to collect the color characteristics of modern interior design and classify them into three types: hue (H), saturation (S), and luminance (V). At the same time, it combines with the theory of color psychology to construct a PAD emotion model for interior design. Then, it selects experimental samples and data analysis tools to carry out an example analysis of interior design from the emotional perspective. The data show that the selection of people warm and bright color interior design in the interior design of the background color across the amplitude of the largest and more concentrated in the 47.5°, the main body color across the amplitude of the smallest and most stable, the accent color value of the whole relatively high, the highest 123.6°, the background color saturation is the highest of 34.6°, and the brightness of more than 63.9°, the overall presentation of the warmth of comfort indoor environment. Error-values were 0.004, 0.0698, and 0.038 in order, with the errors all below 10%. This study integrates psychology and color into interior emotional design to better create visually appropriate, comfortable, and culturally rich interior environments for people, and also to promote the development of the interior design field
