    The JCMT BISTRO-3 Survey: Variation of Magnetic Field Orientations on Parsec and Subparsec Scales in the Massive Star-forming Region G28.34+0.06

    Magnetic fields play a significant role in star-forming processes on core to clump scales. We investigate magnetic field orientations and strengths in the massive star-forming clump P2 within the filamentary infrared dark cloud G28.34+0.06 using dust polarization observations made using SCUBA-2/POL-2 on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) as part of the B-field In STar-forming Region Observations (or BISTRO) survey. We compare the magnetic field orientations at the clump scale of ∼2 pc from these JCMT observations with those at the core scale of ∼0.2 pc from archival Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array data, finding that the magnetic field orientations on these two different scales are perpendicular to one another. We estimate the distribution of magnetic field strengths, which range from 50 to 430 μG over the clump. The region forming the core shows the highest magnetic field strength. We also obtain the distribution of mass-to-flux ratios across the clump. In the region surrounding the core, the mass-to-flux ratio is larger than 1, which indicates that the magnetic field strength is insufficient to support the region against gravitational collapse. Therefore, the change in the magnetic field orientation from clump to core scales may be the result of gravitational collapse, with the field being pulled inward along with the flow of material under gravity

    Transformational Leadership and its Role in Fostering Sustainability and Innovation UAE Oil & Gas Industry Case

    This study looks at how transformational leadership (TL) affects innovation and sustainability in the oil and gas business in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Specifically, the research focuses on the UAE. In view of the industry's historical carbon footprint and the increasing focus on sustainability at the international level, the research explores whether or not TL approaches may successfully minimise barriers to sustainable growth. The research also investigates the possibility that innovation might assist in bridging the gap between TL and sustainability. The research makes use of a survey questionnaire based on the Likert scale, and it collects data by employing a positivist theoretical framework and a deductive procedure. The use of regression analysis to test three hypotheses reveals a significant and positive link between TL and innovation as well as sustainability. The first research finding is that innovation in the UAE oil and gas industry does not significantly mediate the impact of TL on sustainability. The findings of this research are valuable for the management decision of the O&G industry and other industries that are interested in the establishment of a creative and sustainable culture and may serve as a reference model for other organisations that seek to implement TL for similar purposes

    Integrating UN Sustainable Development Goals into Mechanical Engineering Electives: A Modular Approach

    This paper presents an innovative approach to incorporating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into the Mechanical Engineering curriculum, focusing on elective courses in the third and fourth years of study. The proposed method introduces a standardized 3-h module for each elective, comprising two hours of theoretical instruction and one hour of practical application. This modular approach ensures consistent exposure to sustainability concepts across various specialized topics within Mechanical Engineering. The theoretical component covers relevant SDGs, their implications for engineering practice, and potential technological solutions. The practical segment includes tailored activities, labs, or design challenges that apply sustainability principles to the specific subject matter of each elective. This integration strategy not only enhances students’ understanding of global sustainability challenges but also equips them with the skills to address these issues within their future engineering careers. The paper discusses the development process of these modules, potential challenges in implementation, and preliminary feedback from faculty and students. By systematically embedding sustainability into existing courses, this approach offers a scalable and efficient method for engineering programs to produce graduates who are both technically proficient and sustainability-conscious, ready to contribute to a more sustainable future

    Grammaticalisation and contact-induced semantic change in JSL, SKSL and TSL

    This article is concerned with semantic change in sign languages of East Asia, and focuses on examples of actual and apparent grammaticalisation. We identify grammatical forms in three related sign languages – Japanese Sign Language (JSL), South Korean Sign Language (SKSL) and Taiwan Sign Language (TSL) – which stem from Old Japanese Sign Language (prior to the end of the Japanese colonial period in 1945). Given the near absence of contact between the three languages since 1945, we posit that forms common to JSL and at least one other language (SKSL or TSL) likely occurred in Old JSL, and we track key subsequent developments in their meanings. The pathways taken by these forms variously display language-internal and contact-induced change. Since 1945 there has been contact with other sign languages – TSL has had extensive contact with Chinese Sign Language (CSL) – and spoken languages, especially Japanese, Korean and Mandarin. Contact with other signed and spoken languages gives access to new grammatical coexpression patterns (Hartmann et al. 2014), and what appears to be grammaticalisation may, thanks to language contact, represent not an internal process but ‘polysemy copying’ or apparent grammaticalisation (Bruyn 2008)

    Investigating the Kinematics of Molecular Gas in Cometary Globule L1616

    LDN 1616 is a cometary globule located approximately 8○ west of the Orion OB1 associations. The massive OB stars in the Orion belt region act as catalysts, triggering the star formation activity observed in the L1616 region which is a photodissociation region (PDR). This paper provides an in-depth analysis of gas kinematics within the L1616 PDR, leveraging the Heterodyne Array Receiver Program (HARP) on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) to observe 13CO and C18O J = 3 → 2 emissions. Employing the Clumpfind algorithm on the C18O emission data, we identify three distinct clumps within this PDR. For each of these clumps, we derive key physical parameters, including the mean kinetic temperature, optical depth, and velocity dispersion. In addition, we compute the non-thermal velocity dispersion and Mach number, providing critical insights into the turbulent dynamics of the gas. Comprehensive evaluation of mass, including virial and energy budget evaluations, are conducted to assess the gravitational stability and star-forming potential of the identified clumps. While previous studies have proposed that radiation-driven implosion (RDI) is the dominant mechanism initiating star formation in LDN 1616, our results suggest that the clumps may represent pre-existing substructures within the PDR. This interpretation is supported by our estimation of a relatively low interstellar radiation field (G0), which, although insufficient to form clumps independently, may enhance gravitational instability through additional compression. Thus, our findings offer a more nuanced perspective on the role of RDI, highlighting its capacity to trigger star formation by amplifying the instability of pre-existing clumpy structures in PDRs like LDN 1616

    Paid Organ Donation: Case Report and Review of the Literature on Health Implications for Kidney Donors and Recipients

    The shortage of organs for use in transplantation has contributed to the development of an international commercial market for organ transplantation. Unfortunately, transplant tourism (TT) is associated with risks for surgical complications, poor graft outcome, increased mortality, and infectious complications. TT increases the risk of several viral (HIV and hepatitis B and C viruses), bacterial (Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Pseudomonas sp., Enterococcus sp., Escherichia coli, and Acinetobacter sp.), fungal (Aspergillus sp., Zygomycetes, Ramichloridium sp., Scedosporium apiospermum, and Trichosporon sp.), and parasitic (Plasmodium sp., Trypanosoma cruzi and Strongyloides sp., and Microsporidia sp.) infections. This paper presents a case report of an anonymous patient who travelled to Pakistan and underwent a commercial kidney transplant. He developed infection from extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli (ESBL-EC). Moreover, we reviewed all published cases of bacterial, viral, and fungal infections in kidney transplant recipients who bought their organs abroad

    I’ve Got the Power! A Social Pedagogical Exploration of Power Dynamics in Relational Leadership and Practice Within Public Services: The Emerging Relational Approach to Public Services

    In response to the impact of New Public Management (NPM), there is a growing awareness of the importance of relational leadership and practice in public services, with organizations looking for guidance and support in developing this. The expanding human learning system (HLS) network of people and organizations is an example of the breath of interest and commitment to service reform that places human flourish at its heart. To effectively develop relational leadership the uncomfortable issue of power must be surfaced and explored if ethical relational leadership is to be truly established. To aid this, I have developed a framework that expands the Danish social pedagogy model of the 3 Ps to assist relational leaders to address and challenge issues of power within relational working. This chapter sets out to explain how to apply this to the organizational context and direct work of public services so that there is more transparency around the inherent power that we navigate within our human relationships that are at the heart of all public services

    Slow But Steady: Long-Term Outcome After Intracerebral Haemorrhage With Continuous Rehabilitation, Judicious Pharmacotherapy, And Surgical Interventions, A Case Report

    Background and Clinical Significance: Outcome data on intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is limited, and functional outcome is considered less favorable after ICH. Most recovery is considered to happen within the first few months, and people with severe post-ICH disability are often excluded from long-term rehabilitation. Case Presentation: We describe the case of a hypertensive male in his 70s who suffered a massive ICH (ICH score of 4) and acute hydrocephalus. After intensive therapy followed by long-term rehabilitation, the patient recovered to a modified Rankin scale of 4 and a Barthel index of 40, overcoming complications like seizures, obstructive sleep apnea, and psychiatric issues. Conclusions: The highlighting point in our case was the importance of long-term rehabilitation in moribund stroke patients and how effective coordination between the patient’s family and the treating team becomes fruitful. Our case also demonstrated that the Barthel index provides a more accurate representation of functional recovery than the modified Rankin scale

    It’s Not Just Structural: Political Context and London’s Environmental Networks Twenty‐One Years Later

    The past 21 years have seen the UK environmental movement transform as climate change has become an urgent issue and broader publics have engaged in civil disobedience. More radical protest forms are curtailed by new legislation, while large NGOs like Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace have repositioned themselves as more locally responsive (e.g., anti-fracking). This article uses a novel perceptive and mapping approach to political opportunity theory to compare networking in London’s environmental movement, 2002–2003 to 2023–2024. We compare our interview data (n = 49) and an organisational network survey (n = 66) from 2023–2024 with data from 2002–2003. We argue that structural opportunities vary little and so cannot explain contrasting networking patterns. We describe a set of contingent factors that have varied across the two different eras. These partly tally with activists’ own concerns about a recently emerged “grim political environment.” Our novel contribution shows that contingent factors shaping environmental activism have influenced activists’ perceptions of a closed polity, resulting in slightly more inclusive networks. Our key finding is that the centrality of climate change to contemporary environmental activism, the perceived urgency of the climate crisis, and the government’s poor track record in slowing it have resulted, cautiously, in networks that span what was once a more definitive radical–reformist divide

However, the chapter also acknowledges the challenges faced by national carriers in adapting to a more competitive landscape and the need for regulatory harmonisation to ensure fair competition. Furthermore, the chapter delves into the crucial role of enhanced air connectivity in fostering broader economic development within the ASEAN region. It examines how improved connectivity can attract foreign direct investment, facilitate trade by reducing transportation costs, and promote knowledge sharing and tourism. Finally, the chapter underscores the importance of sustained collaboration and robust policy coordination among ASEAN member states. It argues that such collaborative efforts are essential to overcome potential roadblocks, fully realise the OSP’s transformative potential, and ultimately achieve a truly integrated and thriving ASEAN aviation market
