    Automatic evaluation-feedback system for automated social skills training

    Social skills training (SST), which is a rehabilitation program for improving daily interpersonal communication, has been used for more than 40 years. Although such training’s demand is increasing, its accessibility is limited due to the lack of experienced trainers. To tackle this issue, automated SST systems have been studied for years. An evaluation-feedback pipeline of social skills is a crucial component of an SST system. Unfortunately, research that considers both the evaluation and feedback parts of automation remains insufficient. In this paper, we collected and analyzed the characteristics of a human?human SST dataset that consisted of 19 healthy controls, 15 schizophreniacs, 16 autism spectrum disorder (ASD) participants, and 276 sessions with score labels of six clinical measures. From our analysis of this dataset, we developed an automated SST evaluation-feedback system under the supervision of professional, experienced SST trainers. We identified their preferred or most acceptable feedback methods by running a user-study on the following conditions: with/without recorded video of the role-plays of users and different amounts of positive and corrective feedback. We confirmed a reasonable performance of our social-skill-score estimation models as our system’s evaluation part with a maximum Spearman’s correlation coefficient of 0.68. For the feedback part, our user-study concluded that people understood more about what aspects they need to improve by watching recorded videos of their own performance. In terms of the amount of feedback, participants most preferred a 2-positive/1-corrective format. Since the average amount of feedback preferred by the participants nearly equaled that from experienced trainers in human?human SSTs, our result suggests the practical future possibilities of an automated evaluation-feedback system that complements SSTs done by professional trainers.journal articl

    Adapting the Number of Questions Based on Detected Psychological Distress for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy With an Embodied Conversational Agent: Comparative Study

    Background: The high prevalence of mental illness is a critical social problem. The limited availability of mental health services is a major factor that exacerbates this problem. One solution is to deliver cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) using an embodied conversational agent (ECA). ECAs make it possible to provide health care without location or time constraints. One of the techniques used in CBT is Socratic questioning, which guides users to correct negative thoughts. The effectiveness of this approach depends on a therapist’s skill to adapt to the user’s mood or distress level. However, current ECAs do not possess this skill. Therefore, it is essential to implement this adaptation ability to the ECAs. Objective: This study aims to develop and evaluate a method that automatically adapts the number of Socratic questions based on the level of detected psychological distress during a CBT session with an ECA. We hypothesize that this adaptive approach to selecting the number of questions will lower psychological distress, reduce negative emotional states, and produce more substantial cognitive changes compared with a random number of questions. Methods: In this study, which envisions health care support in daily life, we recruited participants aged from 18 to 65 years for an experiment that involved 2 different conditions: an ECA that adapts a number of questions based on psychological distress detection or an ECA that only asked a random number of questions. The participants were assigned to 1 of the 2 conditions, experienced a single CBT session with an ECA, and completed questionnaires before and after the session. Results: The participants completed the experiment. There were slight differences in sex, age, and preexperimental psychological distress levels between the 2 conditions. The adapted number of questions condition showed significantly lower psychological distress than the random number of questions condition after the session. We also found a significant difference in the cognitive change when the number of questions was adapted based on the detected distress level, compared with when the number of questions was fewer than what was appropriate for the level of distress detected. Conclusions: The results show that an ECA adapting the number of Socratic questions based on detected distress levels increases the effectiveness of CBT. Participants who received an adaptive number of questions experienced greater reductions in distress than those who received a random number of questions. In addition, the participants showed a greater amount of cognitive change when the number of questions matched the detected distress level. This suggests that adapting the question quantity based on distress level detection can improve the results of CBT delivered by an ECA. These results illustrate the advantages of ECAs, paving the way for mental health care that is more tailored and effective.journal articl

    A Hawkes Model Approach to Modeling Price Spikes in the Japanese Electricity Market

    The Japan Electric Power Exchange (JEPX) provides a platform for the trading of electric energy in a manner similar to more traditional financial markets. As the number of market agents increase, there is an increasing need for effective price-forecasting models. Electricity price data are observed to exhibit periods of relatively stable, i.e., low-magnitude, low-variance prices interspersed with periods of higher prices accompanied by larger uncertainty. The price data time series therefore exhibits a temporal non-stationarity characteristic that is difficult to capture with typical time series modeling frameworks. In this paper, we implement models for the occurrence of price spike events where spikes are defined as observing prices above a predefined threshold set here at 25 JPY/kWh. This value corresponds to about the 90th percentile of observed prices during peak trading periods. The price spikes time series is observed to be rare events that occur in clusters. We therefore propose to model the data as a Hawkes process whereby the occurrence of a spike event increases the probability of observing more spikes in the period immediately following a price spike event. We test two variations of the classical Hawkes model: the first variation models the change in the magnitude of the underlying intensity as a function of the magnitude of the price spike while the second variation models the change in the decay rate of the underlying intensity as a function of the magnitude of the price spike. An analysis of the performance of the models based on the mean absolute error (MAE) of the spike occurrence probability, a weighted accuracy index, and the Matthews correlation coefficient (MCC) metrics shows the effectiveness of the variable magnitude variation of the Hawkes model in generating short-term forecasts of the occurrence of price spike events. The modified Hawkes model especially outperforms other candidate models as the length of the forecasting horizon increases.journal articl

    Validity, reliability, and correlates of the Smartphone Addiction Scale$2013Short Version among Japanese adults

    Background The short version of the smartphone addiction scale (SAS-SV) is widely used to measure problematic smartphone use (PSU). This study examined the validity and reliability of the SAS-SV among Japanese adults, as well as cross-sectional and longitudinal associations with relevant mental health traits and problems. Methods Datasets from a larger project on smartphone use and mental health were used to conduct two studies. Participants were adults aged over 20 years who carried a smartphone. Results Study 1 (n = 99,156) showed the acceptable internal consistency and structural validity of the SAS-SV with a bifactor model with three factors. For the test-retest reliability of the SAS-SV, the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was .70, 95% CI [.69, 70], when the SAS-SV was measured seven and twelve months apart (n = 20,389). Study 2 (n = 3419) revealed that when measured concurrently, the SAS-SV was strongly positively correlated with another measure of PSU and moderately correlated with smartphone use time, problematic internet use (PIU), depression, the attentional factor of impulsiveness, and symptoms related to attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. When measured 12 months apart, the SAS-SV was positively strongly associated with another measure of PSU and PIU and moderately associated with depression. Discussion The structural validity of the SAS-SV appeared acceptable among Japanese adults with the bifactor model. The reliability of the SAS-SV was demonstrated in the subsequent seven- and twelve-month associations. Conclusion The cross-sectional and longitudinal associations of the SAS-SV provided further evidence regarding PSU characteristics.journal articl

    Decoding cellular deformation from pseudo-simultaneously observed Rho GTPase activities

    Limitations in simultaneously observing the activity of multiple molecules in live cells prevent researchers from elucidating how these molecules coordinate the dynamic regulation of cellular functions. Here, we propose the motion-triggered average (MTA) algorithm to characterize pseudo-simultaneous dynamic changes in arbitrary cellular deformation and molecular activities. Using MTA, we successfully extract a pseudo-simultaneous time series from individually observed activities of three Rho GTPases: Cdc42, Rac1, and RhoA. To verify that this time series encoded information on cell-edge movement, we use a mathematical regression model to predict the edge velocity from the activities of the three molecules. The model accurately predicts the unknown edge velocity, providing numerical evidence that these Rho GTPases regulate edge movement. Data preprocessing using MTA combined with mathematical regression provides an effective strategy for reusing numerous individual observations of molecular activities.journal articl
