Impact of alcohol consumption and muscle mass on bone mineral density in metabolic dysfunction and alcohol-associated liver disease (MetALD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD)

    No full text
Background and aims: Metabolic dysfunction and alcohol-associated liver disease (MetALD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) are newly defined conditions within steatotic liver disease (SLD). We have previously reported that lean physique, hypertriglyceridemia and weak grip strength are risk factors for decreased bone mineral density (BMD) in patients with MASLD. While BMD is influenced by both alcohol consumption and metabolic dysfunction, the specific relationship between SLD and decreased BMD remains unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the impact of alcohol consumption in patients with MetALD and MASLD, and to identify risk factors for decreased BMD in patients with MetALD in a health examination setting. Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study analyzed individuals who underwent health examinations from April 2018 to March 2023. BMD was determined at the calcaneus using an AOS-10SA bone densitometer. Decreased BMD was defined as T-scores below −1.0 standard deviation or ongoing treatment for osteoporosis. Results: We evaluated 1,945 patients with MetALD and MASLD. The median age was 53 years (interquartile range: 47–61 years), and men comprised 83.9 % of the cohort. In multivariate analysis of patients with MetALD and MASLD, the following were identified as independent risk factors for decreased BMD: lean physique (odds ratio [OR]: 0.52, 95 % confidence interval [CI]: 0.39–0.70), hypertriglyceridemia (OR: 1.27, 95 % CI: 1.02–1.57), male sex (OR: 1.63, 95 % CI: 1.06–2.50), older age (OR: 1.02, 95 % CI: 1.00–1.03), low creatinine levels (OR: 0.40, 95 % CI: 0.17–0.97), and low grip strength (OR: 0.97, 95 % CI: 0.95–0.99). Notably, moderate alcohol consumption was associated with a lower risk of decreased BMD (OR: 0.71, 95 % CI: 0.55–0.92) compared to no/light alcohol consumption. A total of 535 individuals were diagnosed with MetALD. In these patients, weak grip strength was the only independent risk factor for decreased BMD (OR: 0.96, 95 % CI: 0.93–1.00). BMD values showed a weak but significant positive correlation with grip strength measurements (ρ = 0.149, P < 0.001). Conclusions: Our study revealed that moderate alcohol consumption was associated with preserved BMD in patients with MetALD and MASLD, while patients with weak grip strength appear to be at higher risk for decreased BMD in MetALD. Low grip strength likely indicates reduced systemic skeletal muscle mass, suggesting a potential relationship with decreased BMD. Our findings suggested that patients with weak grip strength should be prioritized for BMD assessment in MetALD, enabling early intervention for bone health management. The study highlights the complex relationship between moderate alcohol consumption, muscle strength, and bone health in patients with MetALD and MASLD.journal articl

Anomalous magnetic transition in a disordered quasicrystal approximant with heavy-fermion nature

    Get PDF
Quasicrystal approximant (Ce⁢Y1−)⁢Cd6(0≤≤1) forms a magnetic frustration network of corner-sharing octahedra. We report that (Ce0.8⁢Y0.2)⁢Cd6 exhibits an anomalous magnetic transition that can be classified as neither conventional static magnetic ordering nor a spin glass. The anomalous transition is characterized by the coexistence of a static order and a frequency-dependent sharp positive anomalous peak in the third-harmonic susceptibility. Based on investigations of the reference systems CeCd6 and (Ce0.05⁢Y0.95)⁢Cd6, it is suggested that the anomalous transition is induced by disorder in the potentially frustrated octahedral network system in the presence of the Kondo effect.journal articl

Reducing-Agent-Free Barton–Kellogg Synthesis of Bis(fluorenylidene)quinacridanes with Chromic and NIR Absorption Properties

    No full text
We report the stepwise synthesis of sterically hindered olefins comprising quinacridone and fluorene units via reducing-agent-free Barton–Kellogg olefination. The monosubstituted product (mono-FQA-S) exhibits distinct mechanochromic behavior, while the bis-substituted derivative (double-FQA) displays near-infrared absorption with a maximum wavelength at 869 nm. Their photophysical and electrochemical properties were systematically investigated. X-ray diffraction characterized the double-FQA structure. Space-charge-limited current (SCLC) measurements showed that double-FQA could be used as hole transport material. Their photophysical and electrochemical properties were systematically investigated.journal articl

Successful treatment with sintilimab plus anlotinib for SMARCA4-deficient non-small cell lung cancer with MET exon 14 skipping: a case report

    Get PDF
SMARCA4-deficient non-small-cell lung cancer (SD-NSCLC) is a rare and highly aggressive epithelial tumor that originates in the lungs. SD-NSCLCs are more prevalent among male smokers, lacks mutations of the mesenchymal-epithelial transition g (MET) gene, and does not have an established treatment plan. Herein, we present a unique case of an SD-NSCLC, an adenocarcinoma with a MET14 skipping mutation, in the left upper lung lobe which was classified as cT4N3M1a stage IVa. Next-generation sequencing revealed a D1010H skip mutation in exon 14 of MET, and immunohistochemistry indicated a programmed death ligand 1 expression level of 90%. Owing to financial constraints and concerns regarding chemotherapy, the patient declined MET inhibitor-targeted therapy and chemotherapy. Instead, the patient received sintilimab and anlotinib. Following two treatment cycles, a notable reduction in the lesions in the left upper lobe and a significant decrease in lung metastases were observed, and the patient has attained a progression free survival of >2 years. This case represents the initial documentation of SD-NSCLC featuring MET14 skipping mutations and its effective management with programmed death protein 1 inhibitors, in conjunction with anti-angiogenic agents. We believe that the combination of sintilimab and anlotinib can be a viable therapeutic approach for the treatment of SD-NSCLCs.departmental bulletin pape

Origin of reduced thermal conduction by native point defects in PbTe: Perturbed molecular dynamics with neural network potential

    Get PDF
Native point defects are fundamental building blocks of defect engineering in thermoelectric materials. However, it remains unclear which changes induced by point defects reduce lattice thermal conductivity l at the atomic level. This study develops a neural-network potential (NNP) trained on density functional theory data for lead telluride (PbTe) and applies it to equilibrium and perturbed molecular dynamics (PMD) simulations. Isolated Pb and Te vacancies, antisites, interstitials and Schottky pairs are examined using sufficiently large supercells. The NNP is shown to reproduce harmonic and anharmonic vibrational properties and to accurately predict potential energy and atomic forces at finite temperatures. NNP-based PMD simulations reveal that local thermal transport near defects varies significantly depending on the defect type, exhibiting the lowest l for interstitial Pb. Atom-resolved l of point defects and their neighboring atoms correlate with the integrated absolute difference in vibrational density of states between those atoms and bulk atoms. This trend appears even within the harmonic approximation, which neglects anharmonic contributions. This suggests that the difference between the harmonic potential energies of pristine and defect-containing PbTe plays a central role in reducing l , by modifying the force field around point defects through the second-order force constant. In contrast, atomic displacements around point defects show a weak correlation with atom-resolved l and thus may not be a suitable metric for predicting l of defect-containing PbTe, although relevant quantities are assumed to affect l in conventional analytical models. The present NNP enables us to analyze physical quantities accessible via molecular simulations with high accuracy and to understand the underlying mechanisms of thermal transport reduction by point defects, without relying on analytical models.journal articl

Information content in anisotropic cosmological fields: Impact of different multipole expansion scheme for galaxy density and ellipticity correlations

    Get PDF
Multipole expansions have been often used for extracting cosmological information from anisotropic quantities in observation. However, which basis of the expansion is best suited to quantify the anisotropies is not a trivial question in any summary statistics. In this paper, using the Fisher matrix formalism, we investigate the information content in multipole moments of the power spectra of galaxy density and intrinsic ellipticity fields in linear theory from the Alcock-Paczynski effect and redshift-space distortions (RSD). We consider two expansion schemes, the associated Legendre basis as well as the standard Legendre basis conventionally used in literature. We find that the information in the multipoles of the intrinsic alignment (IA) power spectra in the associated Legendre basis converges more slowly to that in the full 2D power spectra than in the Legendre basis. This trend is particularly significant when we consider a high number density sample. In this high number density case, we show that the errors on the Hubble parameter obtained from the multipoles of the IA cross- and autopower spectra in the associated Legendre basis are respectively about 6% and 10% larger than the full 2D case even when we use multipoles up to ℓ =6 . Our results demonstrate that the choice of basis is arbitrary but changes the information content encoded in multipoles depending on the sample and statistics under consideration.journal articl

    Get PDF
This study analyzed the lexical features of the Japanese reading comprehension sections in China’s National College Entrance Examination (NCEE, Gaokao) from 2020 to 2024. The analysis focused on the distribution of word classes, usage characteristics, and comparisons with the vocabulary specified in the examination syllabus. The results showed that the overall lexical volume and the distribution of word classes remained stable over the five-year period, with nouns, verbs, and particles accounting for the majority of occurrences. Although the total number of lexical items in the reading comprehension sections was smaller than that prescribed in the syllabus, a substantial proportion of out-of-syllabus words appeared. These out-of-syllabus items were mainly Sino-Japanese homographs, compound words, culture-specific terms, and onomatopoeic or sound-symbolic expressions. The findings highlight the need for learners to develop the ability to recognize and interpret vocabulary beyond the syllabus and provide important pedagogical implications for improving Japanese reading comprehension instruction at the high school level.departmental bulletin pape
