    Unlike other areas in Hokkaido, the Kariba Mountain area (1,519.9 m above sea level) , located in the mountainous region bordering the western part of the Shiribeshi district and the northern part of the Hiyama district in southwestern Hokkaido, is known as the northern limit of Japan's Fagus crenata forest, predominated by deciduous broad-leaved trees. Focusing on the high-order correlation between the depth observed in a boring survey and the values obtained through AMS 14C dating, which covered elevations from low (195 m) to high (1,465 m) , and based on drilling columns and pollen and spore analysis charts, the authors examined the transition in the distribution of deciduous broad-leaved trees and coniferous trees in the forest from approximately 16000 yBP. The main tree genera in the area after 16000 yBP are Pinus, Picea, Betula, Quercus, Fagus crenata, etc. Pinus and Picea appeared as the earliest species, together with the fern Selaginella selaginoides, and persisted until around 8300 yBP. Betula, which appeared at the same time and is generally known as a pioneer species, has continued to thrive the longest without experiencing a period of decline since its first appearance. In the lower elevation areas, Quercus appeared after around 8655 yBP and has been in decline up to the present day. It was identified that Fagus crenata, which appeared in the middle to late stage (2641-1700 yBP) , has been outcompeting Quercus even to this day.departmental bulletin pape

    Trial of three-dimensional image estimation from two-dimensional projected trajectory images of alpha particles in GAGG scintillator

    High-resolution trajectory images of alpha particles emitted by Ac-225 and its daughter radionuclides were obtained using a Gd3Al2Ga3O12 (GAGG) scintillator combined with a magnifying unit and a high-sensitivity CCD camera. However, these images were limited to two-dimensional (2D) projections. To achieve more precise estimations of alpha particle trajectories, three-dimensional (3D) images were desired. For this purpose we tried to estimate 3D images by analyzing the intensities and projected ranges of 2D trajectory images of 8.4 MeV alpha particles emitted by an Ac-225 daughter radionuclide, Po-213. First, 8.4 MeV alpha particles were identified based on the total intensity of their trajectories. Then, their incident angles were estimated using the intensity in shallow regions and projected ranges of the trajectories. These estimated angles were used to reconstruct trajectory images along the direction perpendicular to the GAGG scintillator plate.     Beyond Ethnic Ties: Social Mobility in Second-Generation Nikkei-Peruvians in Japan

    Among Japan’s 49,000 Peruvian residents, nearly half are second-generation, primarily working in manual labor. This research examines how second-generation Nikkei Peruvians in Aichi, Japan achieve social mobility through non-ethnic community networks. Through a questionnaire with 57 participants across five Japanese cities, this study found that 77% of those engaged in non-ethnic networks experienced upward mobility, versus just 10% of those without such connections. Community involvement substantially impacts educational and occupational outcomes, with 68% of participants reporting its influence on their status advancement. Non-ethnic networks facilitate upward mobility through multiple mechanisms: professional connections leading to career advancement, access to educational opportunities via mentorship, enhanced language and cultural competencies, and development of bridging social capital that complements existing ethnic ties. The study particularly highlights the significance of these networks in facilitating transitions from manual to non-manual occupations within Japan’s social structure. Additionally, it contributes to existing literature by focusing on an understudied migrant group in Japan, clarifying how non-ethnic social networks can mitigate structural barriers and promote upward mobility.departmental bulletin pape
