    Epitaxial growth of germanium ultra-thin films on Ag(100) thin films on Ge(100) substrates prepared by atomic segregation epitaxy

    This study investigates the growth of germanene on an Ag(100) thin film on a Ge(100) substrate through germanium (Ge) segregation, using Auger electron spectroscopy, low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), and core-level (CL) photoemission spectroscopy. A clean Ag(100) surface is obtained by annealing at 300 °C, and 2√2×4√2 R45° spots are mainly seen in the LEED pattern after annealing at 370 °C. When annealed at 460 °C, a square-shaped streak with a threefold Ag(100) periodicity appears in the LEED pattern, specifically the partially incommensurate (3 × n) superstructure, where n is an arbitrary number. The STM images of the (3 × n) superstructure reveal two domains rotated at 90°. After annealing at 540 °C, the LEED pattern displays an incommensurate sixfold symmetry (1.20 × 1.20) with a unit cell length of 0.40 nm. From angle-resolved CL spectra, Ge atoms are found at the topmost surface of the Ag(100). CL spectra suggest that the chemical state is similar to that of germanene on Ag(111).     Primitive chain network simulations of double peaks in viscosity growth curves of densely branched pom-pom polymer melts in fast shear flows

    Despite many attempts, the molecular mechanism of the nonlinear viscoelastic response of polymeric liquids in fast shear flows has not yet been fully elucidated. In this study, we examined the viscosity growth curves for a few well-characterized, nearly monodisperse, densely branched pom-pom polystyrene melts. The viscosity growth curves exhibit double peaks rather than the widely reported (for most polymer melts) single peak. To investigate the underlying molecular mechanism responsible for the observed behavior, we conducted primitive chain network (multi-chain sliplink) simulations, and found that the first and second peaks correspond to arm orientation and backbone stretch, respectively. We further observed that backbone stretch is reduced by coherent molecular tumbling at the flow start-up, and hence the second peak intensity comes out comparable to that of the orientation-induced first peak. In our sample, the number of backbone entanglements is small, so the mechanism of branchpoint withdrawal does not play a significant role.journal articl

    Partial Discharge Progress and Breakdown Characteristics of Oil-Impregnated Paper Insulation System for Capacitor Voltage Transformers

    Capacitor voltage transformers (CVTs) with aluminum foil/oil-impregnated papers composite insulation system have been operated over 30 years in substations. An insulation diagnosis of CVT is expected to be based on detecting partial discharge (PD). However, PD characteristics from PD inception to breakdown (BD) have not been clarified yet. In an insulation diagnosis of CVT, it is necessary to diagnose a risk level of BD based on PD characteristics. In this article, we investigated the PD characteristics using electrical and optical measurement on the fundamental insulation model of CVT and discussed the PD progress characteristics leading to BD. Experimental results revealed that PD, which was generated from the aluminum foil electrode periphery, progressed from the creeping direction to the penetrating direction of the oil-impregnated papers, and then, BD occurred. When PD penetrated the oil-impregnated paper, PD charge increased, and hydrogen-based gas was generated. This PD progress can be an important factor to establish insulation diagnosis based on PD measurement of CVT.journal articl

    Effective High-Frequency AC Conditioning in Vacuum

    To improve the dielectric strength in a vacuum, spark conditioning through repetitive breakdowns by ac voltage application is an effective method. High-frequency ac conditioning is expected for the higher dielectric strength after conditioning, but the optimized frequency and other conditions for effective ac conditioning have not been clarified. In this article, applied ac voltage frequency and electrode material are investigated as parameters for the dielectric strength improvement by ac conditioning. High-frequency ac conditioning is conducted for the stainless steel (SUS) electrodes and compared with that for the Cu electrodes. Experimental results reveal that the high-frequency ac conditioning improves the dielectric strength by 13% at 550 Hz for the Cu electrodes, but does not almost improve for the SUS electrodes. For the electrode materials with high electrical conductivity, such as Cu, the harmful effects of unnecessary or multiple breakdowns during conventional or low-frequency ac conditioning would be relatively large. Thus, high-frequency ac conditioning can be effective for electrode materials with high electrical conductivity due to the suppression of multiple breakdowns. Second, impulse conditioning with shot-by-shot polarity reversal, i.e., no unnecessary or multiple breakdowns, is carried out in order to simulate the same condition as the optimized frequency of ac conditioning. As a result, the impulse breakdown voltage after impulse conditioning is similar to that after 550 Hz ac conditioning. This result suggests that high-frequency ac conditioning can be sufficiently effective by increasing the ac voltage frequency from 60 to 550 Hz.journal articl

    Distraction osteogenesis can induce substantial skeletal tissue regeneration; however, the treatment duration is long, making the procedure suboptimal for clinical care. Rho-associated coiled-coil-containing protein kinase inhibitors might promote bone generation in distraction osteogenesis and shorten treatment durations. However, the relationship between Rho-associated coiled-coil-containing protein kinase inhibitors and distraction osteogenesis levels has not been described. In this study, we focused on osteoblasts and osteoclasts, which are essential for bone remodeling and regeneration. Proliferation assay, boyden chamber, and wound healing assay were performed on MC3T3-E1 and RAW264 cells. Osteogenic differentiation assay was performed on MC3T3-E1 cells, and osteoclast differentiation assay was performed on RAW264 cells. Samples collected from distraction osteogenesis model mice were subjected to micro-computed tomography analysis and tissue staining. We found that Y-27632, a Rho-associated coiled-coil-containing protein kinase inhibitor, promoted cell motility and affected cell differentiation and bone differentiation in MC3T3-E1 preosteoblast cells. We also found that Y-27632 promoted cell motility and osteoclast differentiation in the osteoclast precursor RAW264 cells. In vivo experiments showed that the local administration of Y-27632 in a mouse distraction osteogenesis model promoted bone formation and increased the number of osteoblasts and osteoclasts in the distraction osteogenesis gap. These findings demonstrate that Y-27632 promotes bone formation in a mouse distraction osteogenesis model. Collectively, the study findings suggest that Y-27632 can be used as a therapeutic agent to promote distraction osteogenesis healing.departmental bulletin pape

    Room-Temperature Operation of Ge1−xSnx/Ge1−x−ySixSny Resonant Tunneling Diodes Featured with H2 Introduction during Molecular Beam Epitaxy

    As oscillators used for terahertz communication, a resonant tunneling diode (RTD) composed of group-IV semiconductors is desirable. From the perspective of energy band engineering, we focus on the Ge1–xSnx/Ge1–x–ySixSny double-barrier structure (DBS) with group-IV compound materials. Although we observed negative differential resistance (NDR) at 10 K of the Ge1–xSnx/Ge1–x–ySixSny RTD, we needed to enhance its low operating temperature. This study explored the impact of introducing H2 during the growth of Ge1–xSnx/Ge1–x–ySixSny DBS on their crystallinity and homogeneity. Our findings revealed that introducing H2 during the growth of the Ge1–x–ySixSny layer with a high Si composition (approximately 50%) led to island growth, whereas the layer growth was more likely for Ge1–xSnx. By introducing H2 only during the growth of the Ge1–xSnx layer, we achieved significantly improved crystallinity and homogeneity in the Ge1–xSnx/Ge1–x–ySixSny DBS. Consequently, we successfully observed NDR in the Ge1–xSnx/Ge1–x–ySixSny RTD over a wide temperature range of 10–300 K. Moreover, the improved crystallinity and homogeneity allowed for NDR to appear in both sweep directions of the bias voltage at 200 K. The peak current density and peak-to-valley current ratio were approximately 9.65 kA/cm2 and 1.31, respectively, surpassing previous Ge1–xSnx/Ge1–x–ySixSny RTDs. Theoretical simulation of the current–voltage characteristics using TCAD indicated that the observed NDR originated from the second quantum level in the Ge1–xSnx well. Finally, we examined potential directions for further enhancement of reliability and output performances.journal articl
