Once upon a Time in Dessau:
Portrait of a Provincial Industrial City (3) 
Dessau is a small city in Saxony-Anhalt state which belonged to 
the former East Germany. It was once the capital of the Duchy of 
Anhalt, which was established in 1863, and played a major role in 
the industrialization of Central Germany. After the end of the Duchy 
in 1918, the Junkers, well known as the manufacturer of the world's 
first all-metal aircraft, was founded and the Bauhaus, one of the most 
influential design schools in the 20th century, moved there. On the 
other hand, it has a dark history in the Nazi era. This study is an 
attempt to analyze and interpret several aspects of German history 
from the viewpoint of a provincial industrial city. In this third part of 
the study, I analyze the political system and practice of the German 
Empire, especially focusing on the relationship between the Empire 
and Prussia in the Bismarck era (1871-90), and trace the economic 
and political history of Germany in the late 19th century.
