    Blue Exoskeleton, Aridity, and Thermoregulation in Some Western Nearctic Spider Wasps (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae)

    Several Nearctic spider wasp genera and subgenera in the subfamily Pompilinae (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae) in the arid western United States and northern Mexico are characteristically blue, violet, or purple in color: Aporus Spinola; Plectraporus Bradley; Chelaporus Bradley; Psorthaspis Banks; Chalcochares Banks; Evagetes Lepeletier; and Allochares Banks. Other genera and subgenera of Pompilinae in western United States and northern Mexico have one or more bluish or violaceous species: Episyron Schiødte; Notiochares Banks; Pompilinus Ashmead; Anoplius Dufour; Hesperopompilus Evans; Ammosphex Wilcke; and Arachnospila Kincaid. In California, 27/79 (34.2%) species of Pompilinae are blue, violet, or purple. The number of blue, violet, or purple Nearctic species in the subfamily Pepsinae in the western United States and northern Mexico is significantly fewer than in the subfamily Pompilinae. Only Pepsis Fabricius (Pepsini) and Auplopus Spinola and Ageniella Banks (Ageniellini) have bluish, bluish-green, greenish, or violaceous species. Black spider wasps predominate in the moist, densely vegetated, often forested, and mountainous areas of the eastern United States and Canada. Only 6/81 (7.4%) species of Pompilinae in the eastern United States and Canada are blue, violet, or purple. Four of the species are in the genus Evagetes

Conclusion The Transition to Organic Farming Conference highlighted both the economic challenges and opportunities in shifting to organic practices. By continuing outreach and education, providing targeted support, and leveraging community networks, Nebraska Extension plays a pivotal role in supporting farmers through this transition. These efforts will not only help individual farmers achieve economic sustainability but also contribute to the broader goal of promoting organic farming practices for a healthier, more sustainable agricultural future

    We Are What We Maintain—Including Ourselves: Infrastructure and Interdependence of Library Work in the Midst of Disruption

    Library workers need a language and a framework for advocacy that effectively names and makes visible the key elements and interconnected nature of our work. This article proposes Burkholder’s and McGinniss’s (2020) maintenance schema, which consists of resources, platform, energy, and vision, as a viable language and framework for this kind of advocacy. It does this by analyzing several major issues facing academic libraries that were exacerbated by the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic: declining budgets, inequalities in academic libraries, and wide-spread exhaustion among library workers. The application of the maintenance schema to these specific issues demonstrates how the schema can help library workers analyze a library’s current situation, determine what is within our control to change, and consider how we can advocate for libraries going into the future. This type of analysis is especially important for librarians acting as leaders, in both official and unofficial capacities, in order to cultivate compassionate and supportive work structures and to more effectively advocate for necessary investments in libraries and the work that maintains it

    Violence among young men in the United States has escalated in recent years, leading to two contrasting perspectives of young men—either as (a) agentic aggressors or (b) by-products of societal shifts that have caused disadvantage. The first perspective characterizes men as entitled and reactionary, prone to aggression when their societal expectations are unmet. This view aligns with the frustration-aggression hypothesis in which unmet desires lead to hostile behaviors, particularly among individuals who perceive a loss of status and significance. Conversely, the second perspective views men as victims of rapid societal changes, such as job displacement, educational disparities, and shifting gender roles. This lens sees men as isolated and struggling to adapt to a new social landscape, leading to feelings of alienation and increased susceptibility to extremist ideologies. Social disconnection models, particularly those focused on ostracism, provide a framework for understanding these dynamics, highlighting the emotional and psychological toll of isolation. This article attempts to reconcile these contrasting views, providing an integrated perspective that can help clarify the phenomenon more fully and guide ongoing attempts to alleviate it

(Rubiaceae) en San José, Jobompiche, Petén, Guatemala. Esta nueva especie es incluida en el grupo abnormis del género Tetralicia Harrison. Se ilustran con fotografías las estructuras morfológicas del pupario, se discute la relación con especies cercanas y se proporciona una clave para la identificación de los grupos y especies del grupo abnormis. Abstract A new species of Aleyrodidae, Tetralicia dubeyi Carapia-Ruiz y García-Ochaeta new species, was found on the underside of the leaves of Hamelia patens Jacq. (Rubiaceae) in San José, Jobompiche, Petén, Guatemala. This new species is included in the Tetralicia abnormis group.     Abstract A new species of Tetraleurodes Cockerell (Hemiptera: Sternorrhyncha: Aleyrodidae), T. gilli, occurring on Quercus L. (Fagaceae) in California is described and illustrated based on its puparium, adults, and nymphs. The puparium of the new species can be recognized from that of other black whiteflies devoid of dorsal wax that occur on oaks by the combination of a filamentous marginal wax fringe as wide as a third to full width of puparium, cephalothoracic setal formula 1 0 1 1, longitudinal suture margined by tubercles, presence of eyespots, a concentric dorsal submarginal fold, ventral spinules medially to legs decreasing in size from large to small medially, sides not deflexed ventrally, and absence of dorsal submarginal papillae, of dorsomedial tubercles on each abdominal segment, and of dorsomedial clusters of pores on fourth abdominal segment. A key to all species of whiteflies with black puparia known to occur on oaks in North America is provided. (Fagaceae) en California es descrita e ilustrada sobre la base de su pupario, adultos y ninfas. El pupario de la especie nueva puede ser reconocido del de otras moscas blancas de color negro que carecen de cera dorsal y ocurren en robles por la combinacion de margen de cera filamentosa tan ancho como un tercio de la totalidad del ancho del pupario, formula setal cefalotoracica 1 0 1 1, sutura longitudinal bordeada por tuberculos, presencia de manchas oculares, un pliegue dorsal concentrico submarginal, espinulas ventrales medialmente a las patas que disminuyen en tamano de grandes a pequenas medialmente, lados no recurvados ventralmente, y ausencia de papilas dorsales submarginales, de tuberculos dorsomediales en cada segmento abdominal, y de grupos de poros dorsomediales en el cuarto segmento abdominal.     The price difference between steers and heifers has long been a focal point for cattle market analysts, cow/calf producers, feedlot operators, and other industry stakeholders, providing insights into market trends, herd expansion, and feeder cattle demand. Herd expansion remains a lingering question and a topic of ongoing debate in 2025. Current industry headwinds, unlike those of previous cyclical shifts, are becoming increasingly relevant as the industry continues to define the trough of the ongoing cyclical contraction. Amid various confounding factors, revisiting the steer-heifer differential provides important clarity in reevaluating this question

    Restoring Exotic Cool-Season Grass Dominated Landscapes with Clethodim and Glyphosate

    A major threat to grasslands around the world is the spread of exotic cool-season grasses (ECSG). ECSG dominate vegetative communities and degrade critical habitats. One of the most common methods to treat ECSG is herbicide. To compare how the widely-used, non-specific herbicide glyphosate compared to the grass-specific herbicide clethodim, we conducted a fall spray in November 2023 at two different sites located in the Central Platte River Valley of Nebraska. The following June, we used a modified Daubenmire frame sampling method to gather data on relative cover, species richness, and community composition. After analysis, glyphosate appeared to be more effective than clethodim at treating ECSG. Glyphosate is less expensive, resulted in greater relative coverage of native species, showed comparable species richness, and had lower relative coverage of ECSG. However, its negative impact on Carex sp. cover may be of concern to some managers. In these cases, clethodim may be a better choice, as recent literature suggests it has minimal impact on sedges. Future research should focus on comparing the effects of multiple treatments occurring at various times in the year and incorporating seeding strategies on both a larger time scale and on larger test plots.
