Wrongful Birth after \u3ci\u3eDobbs\u3c/i\u3e and the Limits of Tort Law in Areas of Dissensus
As the abortion debate has raged in this country, a secondary debate over wrongful birth has accompanied it. Wrongful birth is a medical-malpractice-like claim brought by parents who allege that a medical provider negligently failed to provide accurate information about the fetus and that had they received accurate information they would have terminated the pregnancy. Courts rejected the tort theory until Roe v. Wade was decided. Post-Roe, courts were heavily divided over whether to recognize the claim and what damages were recoverable. Now, after Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the continued viability of wrongful birth is in question, and the already chaotic nature of wrongful birth has become even more complex.
This Article examines wrongful birth and its criticisms before examining the effect Dobbs is likely to have on wrongful birth jurisprudence. It concludes that wrongful birth will remain unchanged in jurisdictions that do not restrict abortion. And it suggests analyses that might permit wrongful birth to remain viable in jurisdictions that ban abortion, though doing so concededly adds to the dissensus surrounding wrongful birth.
Most importantly, the Article examines why wrongful birth has resisted judicial consensus. Instead of simply blaming the heated abortion debate, it concludes that social dissensus about multiple issues makes regulating wrongful birth through tort law inappropriate. Recognizing and accepting the limitations of tort law that wrongful birth exposes is important given that other looming technological developments—such as artificial intelligence and transhumanist ideas to expand human capabilities—promise to raise again and again the same dissensus problem that wrongful birth highlights
Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy as a Method for Identifying Variation in Puparial Morphology and Establishing Characters for Taxonomic Determination
Calliphoridae, or blow flies, are of much ecological and practical importance given their roles in decompositional ecology, medical and veterinary myiasis, and forensic entomology. As ephemeral and rapidly developing species, adults are frequently not present for identification, but puparia (the remaining outer integument of the third instar larvae) are frequently found. These heavily sclerotized remains are stable in the environment but they are of a conservative character. Historically, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has been used for characterization, a technique which is not only time-consuming but also often expensive, effectively making large numbers of specimens impossible to quantify. As an alternative, confocal laser scanning laser microscopy (CSLM) was tested for utility in providing superior data over SEM. Furthermore, due to the use of intrinsic autofluorescence for imagining, CSLM is significantly more rapid than SEM, requiring no preparation for imaging. Three channels of excitation and emission spectra provided not only image data from the pupal wall but also from the hydrocarbons found upon the puparia. The excitation wavelengths were 404.7, 488, and 640.5 nm, and the emissions were 425–475, 500–550, and 663–738 nm. For ten species of calliphorids, CSLM was used to image puparia. Not only did this provide characters for species identification but it also allowed for the examination of hundreds of specimens

Abstract
In North America, the genus Lepidocyrtus Bourlet (Collembola: Entomobryidae) is represented by 18 species, but only three (L. floridensis Snider, L. millsi Snider, and L. pallidus Reuter) have been reported from Florida. We investigated species diversity in leaf litter samples from counties in the north-central and southern part of the state, as the reportedly low species diversity in Florida may be due to under-sampling. As a result, in this contribution we describe three species of Lepidocyrtus new to science: L. bobwoodruffi Soto-Adames, Jenks and Daly, new species, L. brambilae Soto-Adames, Jenks and Daly, new species and L. mikethomasi Soto-Adames, Jenks and Daly, new species. In addition, we provide notes to complement the description of L. floridensis.
Resumen
En America del Norte, el genero Lepidocyrtus Bourlet esta representado por 18 especies. Aunque el estado de Florida alberga una vasta diversidad de habitats, solo tres especies de Lepidocyrtus (L. floridensis Snider, L. millsi Snider y L. pallidus Reuter) han sido reportadas para la region. Asumiendo que la deficiencia en la diversidad de especies reportadas de Florida es debido a la falta de muestreo adecuado, examinamos colecciones aleatorias de condados en la region norcentral y sur del Estado. Como resultado, en la presente contribucion describimos tres especies nuevas para la ciencia: L. bobwoodruffi Soto-Adames, Jenks y Daly, nueva especie, L. brambilae Soto-Adames, Jenks y Daly, nueva especie, y L. mikethomasi Soto-Adames, Jenks y Daly, nueva especie. En adicion, proveemos notas que complementan la descripcion original de L. floridensis
Exploring the Pathogen Profiles of Ancient Feces
Analysis of ancient desiccated feces – termed paleofeces or coprolites – can unlock insights into the lives of ancient people. We collected desiccated feces from caves in the Rio Zape Valley in Mexico (725-920 CE). First, we extracted DNA with methods previously optimized for paleofeces. Then, we applied highly sensitive modern molecular tools (i.e., PCR pre-amplification followed by multi-parallel qPCR) to assess the presence of 30 enteric pathogens. We detected ≥1 pathogen associated gene in each of the ten samples and a mean of 3.9 pathogens per sample. The targets detected included Blastocystis spp. (n=7), atypical enteropathogenic E. coli (n=7), Enterobius vermicularis (n=6), Entamoeba spp. (n=5), enterotoxigenic E. coli (n=5), Shigella spp./enteroinvasive E. coli (n=3), Giardia spp. (n=2), and E. coli O157:H7 (n=1). The protozoan pathogens we detected (i.e., Giardia spp. and Entamoeba spp.) have been previously detected in paleofeces via enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA), but have not via PCR. This work represents the first detection of Blastocystis spp. atypical enteropathogenic E. coli enterotoxigenic E. coli, Shigella spp./enteroinvasive E. coli, and E. coli O157:H7 in paleofeces. These results suggest that sensitive modern molecular tools, such as PCR, can be used to evaluate ancient materials for genes of interest

Academic libraries & LIS professionals in India are going through a major transition because of new technology, changing user expectations, & different ways of teaching. In this study, we take a look at what the future holds for university libraries and the people who work in them. Digital curation, data management, or IT expertise are becoming increasingly important for LIS professionals as we move towards online learning & digital resources. Based on my practical experiences, my personal visits to and observations of numerous university libraries, and a review of the LIS literature, this paper aims to provide a summary of the present and future of academic libraries and LIS practitioners
Parody and Mis-unda-stendings in Comics Art World: Bridging the Gap with New Criteria
The word parody and its many cognates such as appropriation, adaptation, pastiche, travesty, forgery, homage, tribute, swipe, etc., have often been at the centre of fierce debates within the traditional Artworld and various criteria have been proposed for the critical evaluation of visual and literary works. In particular, parody as a dominant practice in postmodern art is a concept that is subject to misunderstandings as to its content and meaning. In Comics Artworld, however, within which recontextualizing practices are very common, often with humorous content, the attempt to describe artists\u27 works and intentions by the criteria applied to other arts, instead of offering analytical and interpretive tools, exacerbates the problem of difficulty of understanding. It is clear that the interpictorial and intertextual or transtextual associations that conclude comics with other arts cannot be judged by the traditional terminology and methodology applied to arts with completely different characteristics. This paper attempts, based on the practices applied to comics, to clarify some of the terms that are often misused and to urge comics scholars to adopt new ones in the direction of securing the autonomy of the genre and a more effective understanding of artists\u27 methods and intentions
Librarians’ Level of Awareness and perception of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics in Federal University Libraries in Southeast, Nigeria
The level of awareness and perception of AI and robotics by librarians are very paramount as to determining their applications and utilization or otherwise in any library. This study therefore aimed at determining librarians’ level of awareness and perception of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics in federal universities in Southeast, Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey design and was guided by three research questions. The population sample of the study was 50 librarians drawn from 5 federal universities libraries on Southeast, Nigeria selected through random sampling technique with the aid of research assistants from each of the universities while a Likert four point type structured questionnaire was the only instrument used for data collection. The instrument was validated by three experts from the department of measurement and evaluation of University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Nigeria using Cronbach’s alpha. Result showed coefficient of α=.84. The questionnaires were sent through respondents emails and were also returned through the same channel 100%. Data collected were analyzed using frequencies and simple percentile and presented in tables. The findings revealed that the level of awareness of AI and its tools by the librarians was very low regardless they have positive perception of the usefulness of application and utilization of AI in university libraries in Southeast, Nigeria but also perceived it as a technology that will have adverse effect on the library staff and information utilization. It was based on the findings that the study recommended among other things that librarians in federal universities in Southeast, Nigeria in particular and Nigeria in general should not wait to be reminded to now tailor their efforts towards acquiring AI skills by training and retraining as to be prepared to face the challenges when the technology is finally introduced in their libraries and also to remain relevant in the scheme of things
Leveraging the Price Slide: A Marketing Opportunity Amid Record-High Prices
The market price discount, commonly known as the price slide, refers to when lighter-weight calves command higher prices per pound compared to heavier calves of similar type and kind. In general, this occurs due to diminishing marginal feed efficiency, or the incremental rate at which an animal converts feed into weight gain. As with any specie, nutrient utilization is most efficient earlier in an animal’s life, making weight gain at heavier weights more costly. Although heavier calves generate a larger value per head, the resulting discount dilutes that value, making the additional weight worth less on a per-pound basis. The “slide”, illustrates the inverse relationship between price and weight—a relationship that is not constant relative to price fluctuations. The slope of the price slide varies from year to year and across months due to the seasonality of feeder cattle supply and placement demand.
