CARES Act and Income Inequality in the Long Run
In this paper, I will be looking at how the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, a revolutionary public policy, led to income inequality decreasing during the Covid-19 pandemic in the US. Additionally, from the data available, the CARES Act seems to not have had any long run effects on income inequality in the US. Although, I would recommend more research on the CARES Act’s long-run effects when more data become available as time passes
Strategies for Reducing Racial Disparities in Maternal Health Outcomes: An Examination of the Role of Doulas
Comparatively high rates of maternal morbidity and mortality remain a significant concern in the United States, particularly for Black women, who face a risk of maternal mortality that is four times higher than that of white women. Realizing the historical context of this burden requires tracing American obstetric and gynecological medicine to its 19th-century roots, where the medical experimentation of enslaved Black women occurred largely unopposed by the voices of those in power. The legacy of this is embodied in the modern maternal health crisis, marked by stark racial disparities in maternal health outcomes. As non-clinically trained professionals whose supportive work recenters birthing women’s autonomy and acts as an advocating voice, doulas occupy a uniquely valuable role in improving health outcomes, particularly for marginalized women who most benefit from their care. This thesis explores current literature on how remnants of the origins of women’s healthcare manifest today as contributors to the modern maternal health crisis and investigates how doulas might act as an essential medical intervention in the reduction of racial disparities in maternal health outcomes
Dr. Doctor: A Look at Life in Medicine
The life of a medical professional is not easy. The road to get there and the lifestyle when practicing is mentally draining and results in many physicians experiencing burnout. This project and paper explore the stigma surrounding mental health in medicine, examining how fear of professional repercussions prevents many physicians from getting help. Through research and interviews with medical professionals of various specialties, this project looks at the different mental health struggles that each specialty faces. Additionally due to increased social media, medicine continues to evolve at a fast rate. Looking forward, medical professionals will have to deal with increased distrust in physicians, making the job even harder. Although work has been done to remove the mental health stigma in medicine, there is still much to accomplish. By shedding light on these issues, this project advocates for a shift to normalize mental health discussions, hopefully resulting in more supportive environments for medical professionals. By bringing attention to different lifestyles in medicine, future generations can be better prepared for the work they must put in to get there
Befitting Bach: Prelude and Fugue Transcribed for Horn Quartet
This thesis, titled “Befitting Bach: Prelude and Fugue Transcribed for Horn Quartet,” consists of horn quartet transcriptions of Prelude 1 and Fugue 1 from Johann Sebastian Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I. The prelude and fugue pair were originally written for harpsichord during the Baroque period, and the pieces remain commonly performed on keyboard instruments. The transcription translates the pieces into four-part horn music while preserving the original musical ideas and accounting for the different technical capabilities between the instruments. The accompanying written component provides a brief history of the original compositions. Further, the report delves into the transcription process, including rationale for musical decisions and part assignments. Both the scores and individual parts are provided for the transcribed pieces

A Strategic Audit of Hilton Hotels
This paper provides a comprehensive strategic analysis and audit of Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc., a global leader in the hospitality industry. It begins with a historical overview of the company and its positioning within the lodging sector, highlighting major competitors such as Marriott International, Hyatt Hotels Corporation, and Airbnb. A PESTEL analysis explores macro-environmental forces shaping the industry, while Porter’s Five Forces framework assesses competitive pressures and how Hilton utilizes its brand strength, digital infrastructure, and loyalty programs to remain resilient. The paper then examines Hilton’s strategic direction and key objectives, identifying sources of competitive advantage and core resources that contribute to long-term sustainability. Two significant challenges are addressed: intensifying competition in the economy segment of the market and rising demands related to sustainability regulations and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) performance. The paper concludes with recommendations for how Hilton can strategically adapt to these pressures while maintaining its leadership and competitive edge in the global hospitality landscape
Optimization of Mammalian Cell Culture for Extracellular Vesicle Production, Isolation, and Characterization using Nano Flow Cytometry for Future Applications in Diagnostics and Nanoparticle Therapeutics
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are lipid bilayer-bound nanoparticles secreted by cells for use in intercellular trafficking and communication. EVs have shown promise for use in diagnostics and nanoparticle therapeutics, but in vitro studies have been hindered by suboptimal and inconsistent EV handling, isolation, and analysis techniques. This study aimed to optimize mammalian cell culture techniques for EV yield and purity, utilize nano flow cytometry (nFCM) to identify optimal EV isolation procedures, and assess the applicability of these methods across clinically relevant mammalian cell lines. The results of this study suggest that cells cultured in serum-free media for 20 hours prior to EV isolation with ultracentrifugation result in EV samples of high yield and purity, with minimal impacts on donor cell viability. Further, particle counts and lipid purity data obtained using precise nFCM analysis suggests the applicability of these techniques to human glioblastoma and mesenchymal stem cell lines. Future work utilizing these methods may aid progress towards improved EV characterization, more precise EV diagnostic applications, and effective therapeutic EV interventions
The Role of Parental Trauma-Related Distress in Emotion Socialization and Child Internalizing Symptoms
Research demonstrates that parental posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is linked to increased levels of parenting stress, lower parenting satisfaction, and overall negative parenting. Beyond impacting parenting behaviors, parental PTSD symptoms are also associated with child outcomes, including increased internalizing symptoms (i.e., depression and anxiety). Emotion socialization—the process by which parents teach their children how to express and regulate their emotions—is one aspect of parenting that may be sensitive to parental psychopathology. Emotion socialization facilitates child emotion knowledge, expression, and regulation, which is important for overall socioemotional development. Given that there is limited research exploring PTSD and emotion socialization, the present study aimed to examine the associations between parental trauma-related distress, emotion socialization, and child internalizing symptoms. Participants were 86 families (parents and child) who had enrolled in an ongoing longitudinal study during pregnancy and completed preschool-age assessments. Parental trauma-related distress, parental emotion socialization (i.e., observed parental emotion talk and parent-report of responses to children’s negative emotions), and child internalizing problems were assessed when children were 3.5 years of age. Correlations demonstrate significant associations among parental trauma-related distress, parental emotion socialization, and preschooler internalizing symptoms. Findings of the present study have the potential to identify early treatment targets within the family that, when addressed, can reduce risk for child internalizing symptoms in the context of parental trauma-related distress
A Seed, Scattered: An Exploration of Drawing and Photography
My artist book and exhibition, A Seed, Scattered, express the ideas and emotions that have driven me while in my final year of my undergraduate studies. This project is not only a reflection of my internal self, but it also serves as an exploration of two art mediums – drawing and photography – and how they have been perceived in history. I was interested in how each medium was being used and how those uses have changed over time, as well as how contemporary use of drawing and photography compares to the past and to my own practice. Drawing has typically been the artist’s mode of manually and subjectively expressing their imagination; photography has typically been used to mechanically and objectively reproduce something that exists in the real world. Using this newfound research and knowledge, I found that my own images, in a way, flipped prior expectations: my drawings are photographic and representational while my photographs are painterly and abstract. Ultimately, I set out to combine photography, drawing, and poetry while also playing off the historical tension between the visual mediums. This investigation culminated in the making of 26 photographs, 8 drawings, and 1 poem, all of which I combined cohesively in an 8 x 10 in. handmade artist book. Within its pages, self-portraiture and nature collide in a vibrant world – a garden – where contrasting things are free to grow together
A Comparative Analysis on the Performance of Two Commercial Egg ELISA Methods on Detecting and Quantifying Whole Egg Powder from a Spiked Matrix
Egg, one of 9 major allergens, is a prevalent public health concern. The objective of this research was to contribute to the general knowledge of egg allergen detection and quantification by comparing two commercial egg ELISA assays from R-Biopharm, RIDASCREEN FAST Egg Protein (Product Code, R6402) and RIDASCREEN Egg (Product Code, R6411). The recovery of protein from whole egg powder (WEP) spiked into a buffer, raw cookie dough, and baked sugar cookie was evaluated using the R6402 and R6411 ELISA methods. WEP was spiked into all three matrices at concentrations of 5, 10, and 50 ppm WEP. Samples were extracted using the extraction method outlined in the R6402 kit and the two different extraction protocols outlined in the R6411 kit. Both the R6402 and R6411 methods reliably quantified 5, 10, and 50 ppm WEP in buffer, raw dough, and baked cookie matrices, with higher percentage recoveries observed with the R6411 method, compared to the R6402 method
