The silicon - silicon oxide system 2.1.1 The Si-O phase diagram 2.1.2 Chemical reaction consideration 2.2 Phase separation of binary systems 2.2.1 Phase separation regimes 2.2.2 Diffusion in solids 2.3 Different types of silicon nanostructures 2.3.1 0D - Silicon nanoparticles 2.3.2 1D - Silicon nanowires 2.3.3 3D - Silicon nanonetworks 3 Experimental methods 3.1 SiOx thin film deposition 3.1.1 SiOx thin films by ion beam sputter deposition 3.1.2 SiOx thin films by reactive magnetron sputter deposition 3.1.3 Comparison of ion beam and magnetron sputter deposition 3.2 Thermal processing of as-deposited SiOx thin films 3.2.1 Oven treatment 3.2.2 Laser treatment 3.3 Thin-film characterization 3.3.1 Rutherford backscattering 3.3.2 Spectroscopic ellipsometry and photospectrometry 3.3.3 Raman spectroscopy 3.3.4 X-ray diffraction 3.3.5 Transmission electron microscopy 4 Results 4.1 Accessible SiOx compositions as a function of deposition and annealing method 4.2 Structure and properties of ion beam sputter deposited SiOx thin films before and after thermal processing 4.2.1 Phase- and microstructure of SiO0:6 thin films deposited by ion beam sputter deposition at 450°C 4.2.2 Phase- and microstructure of SiO0.6 thin films deposited by ion beam sputter deposition at room temperature 4.3 Structure and properties of reactive magnetron sputter deposited SiOx thin films before and after thermal processing 4.4 Multilayer SiOx films for the generation of defined squared mesh structures 5 Discussion 5.1 Compositional homogeneity of SiO0:6 thin films before and after thermal treatment 5.2 Phase structure of as-deposited SiOx thin films 5.3 Influence of the thermal treatment on the structural properties of percolated Si:SiO2 nanostructures 5.3.1 Observed structural properties 5.3.2 Origin of different structure sizes - liquid vs. solid state crystallization 5.4 Influence of the deposition temperature during ion beam sputtering on the structural properties of percolated Si:SiO2 nanostructures before and after thermal processing 5.5 Influence of the deposition method on the structural properties of percolated Si:SiO2 nanostructures 5.6 Formation of interface layers and electrical characterization 6 Summary and outlook 6.1 Summary 6.2 Outlook A EFTEM imagingSilicon-based technology determines the technological progress in the world significantly and is still a material of choice for further development of key technologies. In particular the reduction of silicon structure sizes to a nanometer scale are of great interest. Most silicon nano structures are based on spherical, dot-like or cylindrical, wire-like geometries. A relatively new material system are three dimensional percolated nanocomposite networks of silicon within a silica matrix. To form any of these nano structures fast, room temperature processes are desired which also offer the possibility of structure modification by different process management. The present work studies the formation of three-dimensional silicon nanocomposite networks by the deposition of a silicon rich silicon oxide (SiO x , with x < 2) and subsequent thermal treatment. Thereby, reactive ion beam sputter deposition (IBSD) as well as reactive magnetron sputtering (RMS) was compared. As well, the differences between a conventional oven and a millisecond line-focused diode laser were studied. As-deposited and thermally treated thin films were characterized with regard to the overall mean composition, homogeneity, morphology and structure by Rutherford backscattering, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, spectroscopic ellipsometry, photospectrometry as well as cross-sectional and energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy. Depending on the deposition method as well as the thermal treatment process different structure sizes and degrees of crystallization were achieved. Most notably it was found, that during 13 ms laser processing (oven: min. 90 min), much bigger structures (laser: ≈ 50 nm; oven: ≈ 10 nm) with a notably higher degree of crystallization (laser: ≈ 92-99%; oven: ≈ 35-80%) evolve. Moreover, the structure morphology after deposition is preserved during oven treatment but diminishes following laser processing. This was explained by a process via the liquid phase for laser processing in contrast to a solid state process during oven treatment. Finally it was shown, that intentional introduced vertical and horizontal composition fluctuations can be used to form well-defined silicon nano-networks with a three dimensional square mesh structure.:1 Introduction 2 Fundamentals 2.1 The silicon - silicon oxide system 2.1.1 The Si-O phase diagram 2.1.2 Chemical reaction consideration 2.2 Phase separation of binary systems 2.2.1 Phase separation regimes 2.2.2 Diffusion in solids 2.3 Different types of silicon nanostructures 2.3.1 0D - Silicon nanoparticles 2.3.2 1D - Silicon nanowires 2.3.3 3D - Silicon nanonetworks 3 Experimental methods 3.1 SiOx thin film deposition 3.1.1 SiOx thin films by ion beam sputter deposition 3.1.2 SiOx thin films by reactive magnetron sputter deposition 3.1.3 Comparison of ion beam and magnetron sputter deposition 3.2 Thermal processing of as-deposited SiOx thin films 3.2.1 Oven treatment 3.2.2 Laser treatment 3.3 Thin-film characterization 3.3.1 Rutherford backscattering 3.3.2 Spectroscopic ellipsometry and photospectrometry 3.3.3 Raman spectroscopy 3.3.4 X-ray diffraction 3.3.5 Transmission electron microscopy 4 Results 4.1 Accessible SiOx compositions as a function of deposition and annealing method 4.2 Structure and properties of ion beam sputter deposited SiOx thin films before and after thermal processing 4.2.1 Phase- and microstructure of SiO0:6 thin films deposited by ion beam sputter deposition at 450°C 4.2.2 Phase- and microstructure of SiO0.6 thin films deposited by ion beam sputter deposition at room temperature 4.3 Structure and properties of reactive magnetron sputter deposited SiOx thin films before and after thermal processing 4.4 Multilayer SiOx films for the generation of defined squared mesh structures 5 Discussion 5.1 Compositional homogeneity of SiO0:6 thin films before and after thermal treatment 5.2 Phase structure of as-deposited SiOx thin films 5.3 Influence of the thermal treatment on the structural properties of percolated Si:SiO2 nanostructures 5.3.1 Observed structural properties 5.3.2 Origin of different structure sizes - liquid vs. solid state crystallization 5.4 Influence of the deposition temperature during ion beam sputtering on the structural properties of percolated Si:SiO2 nanostructures before and after thermal processing 5.5 Influence of the deposition method on the structural properties of percolated Si:SiO2 nanostructures 5.6 Formation of interface layers and electrical characterization 6 Summary and outlook 6.1 Summary 6.2 Outlook A EFTEM imagin

    No full text
Fuel cell stacks are finally clamped in place at the beginning of their component life. The material of the bipolar plate is a decisive influencing factor for the compression behavior of the unit cell. Two basic materials are generally used at the level of the bipolar plate; coated metal plates and carbon plates. Metallic bipolar plates consist of thin sheets. Bipolar plates made of carbon are full-body elements made of carbon-graphitic composite material, in whose full body the geometric structure of the plate design is embedded. This article uses a comparison between the compression of metal plate stacks versus carbon plate stacks on the basis of production-related statistical data. The different compression behavior of the fuel cell stacks with their corresponding spring elements is decisive here. The comparison shows that there is a fundamental difference in the compression behavior between coated metal plates and composite-based carbon plates. This is particularly important with regard to production processes suitable for large-scale series, in which closely-timed stacking and clamping processes represent a key point in the construction of fuel cell stacks as a mass product

Vibration resistance of air bearing turbo compressors

    Get PDF
Air bearing radial turbo (also called centrifugal) compressors prevail in most mobile fuel cell air supply applications due to the small size and weight, the high efficiency and the oil- and maintenance free operation. An important aspect in mobile fuel cell applications is the vibration resistance of all system components, including the compressor, with vibration requirements up to 20 g in automotive applications. This paper gives the background of the air bearing vibration characteristics, depicting the dependencies of vibration resistance on inlet conditions and operating points. The critical operating conditions concerning vibration resistance are identified, and it is outlined how vibration requirements can be included in the design process of an air bearing turbo compressor. A visualization of vibration resistance in the commonly used compressor map is presented, allowing the fuel cell system integrator to take qualified decisions for the mechanical integration of the compressor concerning vibrations

Based on the presentation of the current situation at the TU Graz archives, this contribution sticks up for the view, that increased awareness of the pre-archival area of records manegement ist necessary. Even when taking over unstructured digital documents it is necessary to use an interface software that meets the criteria of DIN 31644 for trustworhy digital long-term archives and enables the offices, producing the files, to deliver digital documents in an adequate manner. The functionality of such an interface, programmed an the TU Graz archives, is explained below using examples from the „Academic Honours“ and the official bulletin of the Graz University of Technology. In this context, however, the problem of links that lead from the bulletin to other homepages is also adressed, whereby the archival evaluation also plays an important role in this context. The introduction of master filing plans and/or particular filing plans as well as a constant contact with the administrative staff can also ensure a little more structure in the area of data storage in advance

In this context, extreme events can only be successfully managed through coordinated cooperation between various emergency response organizations and agencies involved in disaster management. Consequently, regular interdisciplinary simulation-based response training is needed to strengthen resilience in disaster management. In this paper, the author deals with the network learning of agencies and organizations with security tasks from emergency response exercises. From a systems theory perspective, the overarching questions of what contribution disaster response exercises make to network learning of the actors participating in the network and how this network learning can be described are investigated. To answer the research questions, a simulation-based disaster response exercise was scientifically accompanied. Using complementary methods and procedures of empirical social research, a weak condensation of the collective knowledge system could be demonstrated. Likewise, the phases and influencing factors of network learning could be reconstructed or described in detail. The findings provide starting points for increasing the learning value of disaster management exercises as well as for further research.:1 Einleitung 2 Theoretische Grundlagen der Katastrophenforschung 3 Theoretisches Vorverständnis für die Herleitung des Bezugsrahmens 4 Forschungsmodell und Arbeitshypothesen 5 Empirische Untersuchung 6 Zusammenfassung und Ausblic

Shape-Controlled Flexible Microelectronics Facilitated by Integrated Sensors and Conductive Polymer Actuators

    No full text
The next generation of biomedical tools requires reshapeable electronics to closely interface with biological tissues. This will offer unique mechanical properties and the ability to conform to irregular geometries while being robust and lightweight. Such devices can be achieved with soft materials and thin-film structures that are able to reshape on demand. However, reshaping at the submillimeter scale remains a challenging task. Herein, shape-controlled microscale devices are demonstrated that integrate electronic sensors and electroactive polymer actuators. The fast and biocompatible actuators are capable of actively reshaping the device into flat or curved geometries. The curvature and position of the devices are monitored with strain or magnetic sensors. The sensor signals are used in a closed feedback loop to control the actuators. The devices are wafer-scale microfabricated resulting in multiple functional units capable of grasping, holding, and releasing biological tissues, as demonstrated with a neuronal bundle

Sensory and methodological aspects in biomechanical research of postural control and clinical fields of application

The human senses constitute a highly complex system based on various sensory organs, afferent pathways, and central processing locations, which allow us to interact with the environment, but also with ourselves. A further domain is important to achieve this interaction: the motor system, which allows linguistic communication and locomotion, for example. It becomes evident that sensory receptors work as a source of information to initiate, optimize, or cease motor activity. One generic term for such sensory sources is the somatosensory system, which is mainly based on receptors located in muscles, tendons, and the skin (cutaneous sensitivity). In this regard, it has been shown that cutaneous sensitivity contributes to human balance regulation. However, there are still debates concerning the exact role of plantar (foot sole) receptor inputs in particular, and how their isolated contribution to, e.g., balance regulation may be assessed accordingly. To investigate the interaction between plantar cutaneous sensitivity and human balance capabilities, several aspects need to be considered which are still controversial and inconclusive in the scientific community. For example, when assessing cutaneous vibration sensitivity, it is well-known that increasing vertical forces of the contactor toward the skin usually result in improved sensitivity. However, it has not been profoundly investigated whether assessing plantar vibratory sensitivity differs when comparing a standing or sitting posture, which obviously involves different contactor forces. In addition, many studies implementing cutaneous sensitivity show certain limitations with respect to adequate data analyses. A similar aspect also applies when assessing balance performance: devices allowing an investigation of dynamic balance performance (induced by unexpected platform perturbations while standing, for example) have only been partially investigated with regard to their biomechanical quality criteria, such as reliability. With these considerations in mind, the present doctoral thesis is based on five published studies. Study 1 investigates if plantar sensitivity is influenced by different body positions when collecting data. Study 2 asks how to appropriatly analze plantar sensitivity data. Study 3 examines the reliability of dynamic balance responses using the so-called Posturomed device, and Study 4 identifies the isolated role of plantar inputs on balance responses, when an acute sensory manipulation is induced that exclusively affects plantar aspects. Ultimately, clinical fields of application (based on the previous four studies) are highlighted in Study 5. The main findings of the first four studies can be summarized as follows. First, higher contact forces when standing compared to sitting did not influence plantar sensitivity. This is an important finding, as plantar sensitivity tests (often performed during sitting) may, hence, be brought into context with balance tests usually performed during standing. Second, plantar sensitivity data are shown to exhibit heteroscedasticity, meaning that the measurement error increases as the values increase. In Study 2, we provided an easy-to-follow example for how to account for heteroscedasticity by logarithmizing the raw data, and how to control whether this approach was successful in eliminating heteroscedasticity. Third, dynamic balance responses assessed via the Posturomed device exhibit an overall good reliability. Occasional significant differences were shown to be clinically non-relevant, identified by root mean square error calculations. Fourth, a permanent plantar sensory manipulation (hypothermia) was successfully achieved and maintained throughout data collection. Study 4 showed that the reduced plantar sensory input due to the hypothermic manipulation was compensated during more unchallenging balance conditions (standing still). There was no full compensation during more challenging balance conditions (unexpected platform perturbations during standing), however, with the body reacting with cautious motor behavior. This became evident by decreased outcome measures following hypothermic plantar sensory manipulation. These four studies shed further light onto investigations combining sensory and motor tests, especially with regard to physiological and methodological aspects that should be considered when analyzing and interpreting associated data. Finally, this doctoral thesis also provides an example of identifying clinical fields of application concerning sensory-focused research. In Study 5, we highlight the role of sensory research in the (early) diagnosis of diseases associated with cognitive decline. For this purpose, various instruments such as sensory tests or coordinative motor tests are implemented. Preliminary results suggest that not only classical cognitive parameters and questionnaires should be used to identify and better understand cognitive decline.
