A Novel Inexpensive Camera-based Photoelectric Barrier System for Accurate Flying Sprint Time Measurement
Electronic photoelectric barriers are established devices to time subjects in experiments or athletes in sports. The systems are reliable and precise, but also expensive. We propose a novel, affordable photoelectric barrier system based on consumer grade camera hardware and show how to build such a system with common electronic components and a smartphone. In two experiments with track and field athletes, we show that our novel system has similar accuracy than a professional photoelectric barrier system, but for a fraction of the costs.:1. Introduction

In this contribution, the effectiveness of helical static mixers in different arrangements and flow configurations/regimes is explored. By means of a thorough numerical analysis the application limits of helical static mixers for the heat transfer enhancement inside
cooling channels of machine tools is provided. The numerical simulations were processed with the commercial finite volume Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code, ANSYS Fluent 2020 R2. This study shows that there exists an optimal range of application for static
mixers as heat exchange intensifier depending on the flow speed, the transmitted heat flow and the thermal conductivity of the tool. The investigations of this contribution are restricted to single-phase flow in circular cross-sections and straight channel geometries. As a representative application example for a machine tooling, the cooling of a simple injection mould is investigated. The research carried out reveals that the application of
static mixing elements for enhancement of heat transfer is very effective, particularly for fluid flow with low to medium Reynolds numbers, close-contour cooling, high values of heat fluxes as well as high thermal conductivity of the tooling material
NaturalWalk: An Anatomy-based Synthesizer for Human Walking Motions
We present a novel data-driven approach for synthesizing human gait motions with individual style characteristics and natural appearance. Our approach is based on the concept of a motion signature that captures the essential characteristic of an individual walking motion. For each joint angle our motion model consists of a shape template and feature functions that describe the variation of that shape with the stride length. For the synthesis of a walking motion, the feature functions are evaluated for a desired stride length. Then the templates are adapted to match the computed features and used as progressions for the joint angles of the skeleton. We demonstrate our data driven approach using motion data captured from 12 individuals. We report on an experiment showing that the synthesized motions have a natural appearance and maintain the individual style.:1. Introduction

Visual Place Recognition in Changing Environments using Additional Data-Inherent Knowledge
Visual place recognition is the task of finding same places in a set of database images for a given set of query images. This becomes particularly challenging for long-term applications when the environmental condition changes between or within the database and query set, e.g., from day to night. Visual place recognition in changing environments can be used if global position data like GPS is not available or very inaccurate, or for redundancy. It is required for tasks like loop closure detection in SLAM, candidate selection for global localization, or multi-robot/multi-session mapping and map merging.
In contrast to pure image retrieval, visual place recognition can often build upon additional information and data for improvements in performance, runtime, or memory usage. This includes additional data-inherent knowledge about information that is contained in the image sets themselves because of the way they were recorded. Using data-inherent knowledge avoids the dependency on other sensors, which increases the generality of methods for an integration into many existing place recognition pipelines.
This thesis focuses on the usage of additional data-inherent knowledge. After the discussion of basics about visual place recognition, the thesis gives a systematic overview of existing data-inherent knowledge and corresponding methods. Subsequently, the thesis concentrates on a deeper consideration and exploitation of four different types of additional data-inherent knowledge. This includes 1) sequences, i.e., the database and query set are recorded as spatio-temporal sequences so that consecutive images are also adjacent in the world, 2) knowledge of whether the environmental conditions within the database and query set are constant or continuously changing, 3) intra-database similarities between the database images, and 4) intra-query similarities between the query images. Except for sequences, all types have received only little attention in the literature so far.
For the exploitation of knowledge about constant conditions within the database and query set (e.g., database: summer, query: winter), the thesis evaluates different descriptor standardization techniques. For the alternative scenario of continuous condition changes (e.g., database: sunny to rainy, query: sunny to cloudy), the thesis first investigates the qualitative and quantitative impact on the performance of image descriptors. It then proposes and evaluates four unsupervised learning methods, including our novel clustering-based descriptor standardization method K-STD and three PCA-based methods from the literature. To address the high computational effort of descriptor comparisons during place recognition, our novel method EPR for efficient place recognition is proposed. Given a query descriptor, EPR uses sequence information and intra-database similarities to identify nearly all matching descriptors in the database. For a structured combination of several sources of additional knowledge in a single graph, the thesis presents our novel graphical framework for place recognition. After the minimization of the graph's error with our proposed ICM-based optimization, the place recognition performance can be significantly improved. For an extensive experimental evaluation of all methods in this thesis and beyond, a benchmark for visual place recognition in changing environments is presented, which is composed of six datasets with thirty sequence combinations
Development of a Control System and Microcontroller Implementation for an Advanced Rotor Technology Demonstrator
The original idea of the thesis was realized to control the electric drive of the rotor with a special feature. Without using a complex mechanism, the angle of each blade of the rotor can be controlled individually. The blades are fixed independently to a permanent magnet and the housing encompassing the rotor contains coils. By powering the coils, the whole rotor turns into a permanent magnet motor and by using a control algorithm, each blade can be separately driven.
In the first chapter, the introduction to the main idea of the research project is described along with working principle of rotor blade. The basic concept of blade angle is introduced.
The second chapter is the state of Technique. In this chapter, the working principle and basics of permanent magnet synchronous machine and brushless motor with
mathematical model is described. Also, space vector pulse width modulation and double acting piezoelectric actuator model for helicopter rotor are explained.
The third chapter is the overall description of the initial status of the research project.
This part includes the basic principle of the control system, sensorless field-oriented control of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (PMSM). Also, the motor
parameters calculated from the python script of motor design are listed in tabular form.
The fourth chapter focuses on control strategy implementation. First of all, the criteria for selecting the microcontroller are described. After that, the structure of the program with a flow chart was explained. Also, a short description is mentioned of how space vector pulse width modulation is applied. The main function of the position and speed controller with block diagram is explained. Moreover, back-EMF based observer and EKF-based observer are described.
In the fourth chapter, the initial problem of the research project is discussed. To overcome this problem, a set of experiments is carried out.
In the last chapter, the result of the experiment with proper explanation is summarized. Further on the future work to solve the problem is listed
Numerical Simulation of Short Fibre Reinforced Composites
Lightweight structures became more and more important over the last years. One
special class of such structures are short fibre reinforced composites, produced by injection moulding. To avoid expensive experiments for testing the mechanical behaviour of these composites proper material models are needed. Thereby, the stochastic nature of the fibre orientation is the main problem.
In this thesis it is looked onto the simulation of such materials in a linear thermoelastic
setting. This means the material is described by its heat conduction tensor κ(p), its
thermal expansion tensor T(p), and its stiffness tensor C(p). Due to the production
process the internal fibre orientation p has to been understood as random variable. As
a consequence the previously mentioned material quantities also become random.
The classical approach is to average these quantities and solve the linear hermoelastic deformation problem with the averaged expressions. Within this thesis the incorpora-
tion of this approach in a time and memory efficient manner in an existing finite element software is shown. Especially for the time and memory efficient improvement several implementation aspects of the underlying software are highlighted. For both - the classical material simulation as well as the time efficient improvement of the software - numerical results are shown.
Furthermore, the aforementioned classical approach is extended within this thesis for
the simulation of the thermal stresses by using the stochastic nature of the heat conduc
tion. This is done by developing it into a series w.r.t. the underlying stochastic. For this
series known results from uncertainty quantification are applied. With the help of these
results the temperature is developed in a Taylor series. For this Taylor series a suitable
expansion point is chosen. Afterwards, this series is incorporated into the computation of the thermal stresses. The advantage of this approach is shown in numerical experiments
Methods and Results of Power Cycling Tests for Semiconductor Power Devices
This work intends to enhance the state of the research in power cycling tests with statements on achievable measurement accuracy, proposed test bench topologies and recommendations on improved test strategies for various types of semiconductor power devices.
Chapters 1 and 2 describe the current state of the power cycling tests in the context of design for reliability comprising applicable standards and lifetime models.
Measurement methods in power cycling tests for the essential physical parameters are explained in chapter 3. The dynamic and static measurement accuracy of voltage, current and temperature are discussed. The feasibly achievable measurement delay tmd of the maximal junction temperature Tjmax, its consequences on accuracy and methods to extrapolate to the time point of the turn-off event are explained. A method to characterize the thermal path of devices to the heatsink via measurements of the thermal impedance Zth is explained.
Test bench topologies starting from standard setups, single to multi leg DC benches are discussed in chapter 4. Three application-closer setups implemented by the author are explained. For tests on thyristors a test concept with truncated sinusoidal current waveforms and online temperature measurement is introduced. An inverter-like topology with actively switching IGBTs is presented. In contrast to standard setups, there the devices under test prove switching capability until reaching the end-of-life criteria. Finally, a high frequency switching topology with low DC-link voltage and switching losses contributing significantly to the overall power losses is presented providing new degrees of freedom for setting test conditions.
The particularities of semiconductor power devices in power cycling tests are thematized in chapter 5. The first part describes standard packages and addressed failure mechanisms in power cycling. For all relevant power electronic devices in silicon and silicon carbide, the devices’ characteristics, methods for power cycling and their consequences for test results are explained.
The work is concluded and suggestions for future work are given in chapter 6.:Abstract 1
