Topology optimized geometry must be provided to the designer in a format that can be used in CAD. The challenge is that the optimization result is typically an STL geometry, but for CAD the surface should be as smooth and simplified as possible. The MSC Apex software creates a real, smoothed parasolid geometry from an STL geometry. A special form of topology optimization is topometry optimization, which suggests the rib structure on a sheet. Reverse engineering is also possible for this. Even heavily deformed components, e.g. rubber parts, can be returned to CAD as geometry in the deformed state, to see how they fit into the assembly in this state

Renewable Borders: Sumer School. Across, October 23-27, 2023

Electric consumption worldwide is projected to sharply increase in the coming decades, driven by population growth and the electrification of more and more human activities, like transportation, communication, industry, and housing. Electricity is thus becoming central to modern society. Most optimistic forecasts suggest that, by 2050, production will be primarily based on renewable energy sources, with the aim of achieving zero greenhouse gas emissions and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. The construction of the necessary infrastructure for this energy transition, such as solar and wind farms, is shaping significant economic, political, and social transformations, while also deeply influencing landscape quality and territorial configuration. Natural resources like the sun or wind do not recognize political borders, historical boundaries of regions or countries. On the contrary, they introduce a new dimension of a continuous, anonymous geography that blurs the conventional concept of borders. One of the aspects generally emphasised with the installation of solar and wind farms concerns their visual impact, and are emblematic of problems associated with the construction of extensive power plants in natural landscapes. Their construction consumes hundreds of hectares of land and significantly alters the skyline. However, these concerns seem to overshadow a more significant issue: the homogenization of territories as they repeat a single solution across the globe, even when the conditions of the sites are completely different. The technical design is an oversimplification of the problem, resulting in a single technology that is designed and implemented to varied scenarios without adapting to local conditions. The system components of this infrastructure are few in number and completely disregard the previous configuration of the territory and the problems traditionally associated with architecture. The built infrastructure of these plants severs any connection with the landscape and memory, it is devoid of any sense of place that evolved in response to historical development and the particular local idiosyncrasies. Traditional constructions, regardless of their technological development, were based on local techniques and materials, evolving with accrued intergenerational experience, with mutual their territory, technology, and architecture were intrinsically. The new renewable energy infrastructure also represents an unprecedented global imposition without the consensus of the local population, rapidly altering the territory’s configuration in just a few years. This imposition also causes a significant transformation of the traditional concept of borders, “lines” that separate tradition, language, or architectural resolution. In this sense, areas hosting these massive infrastructure often transition from productive tissues of the primary sector at the local level —mainly livestock and agriculture— to predominantly industrial ones that function on a global scale. However, these facilities rarely benefit the local population, as the energy produced is usually consumed hundreds of kilometres away. Furthermore, they operate autonomously, without labour, and are owned by large energy corporations, resulting in the distribution of profits among a few hands far away from the affected territories. These corporations are thus building a geography that is drastically different from what the first power plants of rudimentary technology could create. The new renewable facilities disregard the historical, cultural, social, economic, political, and architectural values rooted in the territory, solely to harness wind and solar energy as inexhaustible natural resources in electricity generation. The global implementation of these plants evokes a sense of loss, as it destroys the previous state formed over centuries. However, their construction offers a valuable opportunity to begin imagining the present transformation of the territory by adopting a multidisciplinary approach. The problem posed by these facilities, as we will see, transcends mere technological development and the foreseeable increase in consumption of resources as the only possible paths to progress. The terms “renewable” and “borders” precisely invite to incorporate other dimensions and disciplines to address this issue in a renewed and cross-cutting manner, forming a complex network through the knowledge provided by politics, landscape, history, art, and architecture. This publication, prepared on the occasion of the international workshop Renewable Borders —held in the German city of Chemnitz in October 2023— aims to offer different approaches to the problem of new renewable facilities and their relationship with border configurations. Can we still consider them as immutable lines destined to endure? How does energy production influence the evolution of these limits? What lexicon do we use to define it? In what ways can we represent them? Far from offering concrete answers, the six essays compiled in this publication pose new questions in an open and exploratory manner, uncovering a new field of inquiry that needs renewed thinking beyond the confines of borders.:10 Beyond borders Carlos Gonzalvo and Julia Capomaggi 14 Frivolous energies Alex Nathanson 18 Critical borders Jakob Kullik 22 Renewable surfaces Julia Capomaggi 40 Energy production in the cityscape Dorota Gawryluk and Dorota Anna Krawczyk 44 Heritage and power Marco Acri 46 Renewable lexicon 51 Students 52 Biographie

The low heat joining process of ultrasonic metal welding (USMW) is increasingly important in the aerospace and automotive industries for creating electrically conductive connections. Despite its growing use, there is a significant lack of understanding of this process from both an industrial and scientific point of view, especially in the joining of vehicle wires and terminals. This work aims to deepen process understanding and to develop new methods for process monitoring. The focus of the experimental analyses was on the thermal, mechanical, metallurgical, and vibrometric characteristics of the welding process. Thermographic measurements clarified that heat development primarily occurs in contact between the vehicle wiring and the horn. Vibrometric studies revealed a characteristic vibration behavior of the anvil, offering approaches for advanced process monitoring. An innovative method based on the thermoelectric effect for determining the joining zone temperature enabled precise and cost-effective monitoring of the welding process. Additionally, the reconditioning of contaminated wires through cold gas plasma proved effective, almost completely restoring the weldability of stearic acid-contaminated connections. These results improve the process understanding and increase the process safety of the USMW process, significantly supporting its industrial application

Experimental characterization of four-magnon scattering processes in ferromagnetic conduits

    No full text
Spin waves and their quanta, magnons, are the wave-like excitations of a magnetically ordered medium. The technological prospect of utilizing them as low-loss information carriers has driven various research efforts in the field of magnonics. Spin waves arise further interest due to their inherently strong nonlinear behavior which results from their interaction with the surrounding magnetic texture. Hence, magnons are subject to a variety of nonlinear effects and allow for extensive studies of such phenomena. In this work, the propagating spin-waves in micro structured Co25Fe75 conduits have been investigated by means of micro focused Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy. Due to the low intrinsic damping of this metallic compound, spin-wave decay lengths in the order of 20 μm can be observed which have not been reported elsewhere for other ferromagnet thin film materials. Furthermore, nonlinear four-magnon scattering processes can be observed when increasing the spin-wave amplitudes applying a sufficiently strong microwave excitation. This phenomenon introduces additional losses for propagating waves as it diverts energy into the parametric generation of secondary states. It is shown that the reduction of the spin-wave decay lengths reaches up to 50 %. In the second part, a novel approach for the utilization of four-magnon scattering is presented. It is shown that an additional driving signal at a secondary driving frequency can steer the nonlinear process in such a way, that a set of secondary parametric states with a well-defined frequency spacing is populated. This process is referred to as stimulated four-magnon scattering, as it enhances specific nonlinear scattering events. As a result, frequency combs with multiple equidistant modes are observed, which exhibit frequency spacings of 400 MHz up to 2 GHz. These complex spin-wave spectra can actively be tuned in various ways using external parameters such as the driving signals. These results advance the understanding of nonlinear spin waves in general and expands the range of possible technological applications of magnons.:List of Figures List of Tables List of Abbreviations and Acronyms List of Symbols 1 Introduction 2 Theoretical background 2.1 Interactions in microstructured thin film ferromagnets 2.1.1 Exchange interaction 2.1.2 Dipolar interaction and demagnetizing fields 2.2 Magnetization dynamics in ferromagnetic thin films 2.2.1 The Landau-Lifshitz and Gilbert equation 2.2.2 Spin waves 2.3 Nonlinear phenomena 2.3.1 Four-magnon scattering 3 Materials and Methods 3.1 Materials and sample fabrication 3.1.1 The low damping alloy Co25Fe75 3.1.2 Patterning: electron beam and optical lithography 3.1.3 Microwave antenna structures 3.2 Brillouin light scattering 3.2.1 Magnon-photon interaction 3.2.2 The Tandem Fabry Pérot interferometer 3.2.3 BLS microscopy (μBLS) 3.2.4 Phase-resolved BLS (PR-μBLS) 3.2.5 Temporal resolution (TR-μBLS) 3.3 Micromagnetic simulations in MuMax3 3.3.1 Mesh and material parameters 3.3.2 Simulation of magnetization dynamics 4 Results 4.1 Magnon transport in Co25Fe75 micro-conduits 4.1.1 Low external fields and magnetic groundstate 4.1.2 Magnon transport at low driving powers 4.1.3 Impact of nonlinear four-magnon scattering on magnon transport 4.2 Magnon frequency combs 4.2.1 Introduction on stimulated four-magnon scattering 4.2.2 Experimental realization 4.2.3 Amplitude-dependent observations 4.2.4 Tunability of spin-wave frequency combs 4.2.5 Variations of the excitation geometry 5 Summary and outlook Own publications Bibliography 109 Acknowledgement A Appendix A.1 Fabrication of Co25Fe75 microstructures A.2 Atomic Force Microscopy measurement on a 5 μm wide conduit A.3 BLS measurement of spin-wave decay lengths in a 5 μm wide conduit A.4 Calculations: Temporal profile of stimulated four-magnon scattering A.5 Power dependent frequency comb formation measured at positions II & III A.6 Averaged frequency comb mode numbers at reversed magnetic field polarit

Perception and Production of Word Stress Cues in Slavic English Varieties

    Get PDF
Word stress is crucial for language perception and production as it enables lexical access and speech segmentation. Phonetically, word stress is cued through higher pitch, duration, and intensity. These cues are weighted differently in production and perception by language learners from different backgrounds. Slavic English learners, especially with a fixed-stress West Slavic language background like Czech but also with a variable-stress South Slavic background like Bulgarian face difficulties in word stress acquisition. Their stress placement errors cannot be fully explained by direct transfer and highlight a more complex relation between the target and the native language. This thesis thus aims to explore the perception and production of English word stress cues by speakers of Slavonic Englishes based on evidence from an EEG study on Slavic and German English word stress cue perception and a phonological and phonetic study on Czech English (CzE) features. These findings are used for the conceptualization of a perception and production training tool. First, the concepts of cue and feature are reviewed in an effort to bridge psycho- and sociolinguistics and create credible language stimuli. Then, the Event-Related Potentials study demonstrates that Slavic and German English speakers successfully process first- and second-syllable stress changes cued through pitch, duration, and intensity. Still, speakers of Slavic languages (with a rather syllable-timed rhythm) perceived first and second syllable stress similarly whereas speakers of German (with a rather stress-timed rhythm) perceived the second syllable deviation as more salient. A study on the role of word stress in the CzE feature inventory shows that syllable-timed rhythm also affects production, as speakers lack vowel reduction and add additional stress to longer words. Compared to Bulgarian English (BgE), CzE shows differences in stress features but an overall lack of consistency in their use to differentiate primary from secondary and unstressed syllables. These findings are integrated in the conceptualization of a High-Variability Phonetic Training (HVPT) system featuring segmentals and suprasegmentals. Overall, this thesis finds group differences in foreign language perception and production of word stress and applies them in the development of customized language learning solutions.:List of Figures ix List of Tables xiii List of Abbreviations xv Acknowledgements xvii 1 Introduction 1 1.1 Issue: Perception and production of English word stress cues 1 1.2 Language selection 5 1.3 Association 8 1.4 Research questions and outline 10 2 Background 13 2.1 Word stress 13 2.1.1 Assignment 17 2.1.2 Shifting 23 2.1.3 Rhythm 25 2.2 Word stress perception and production 26 2.2.1 Word stress cues and features 27 2.2.2 Sensitivity to word stress 30 2.2.3 Word stress acquisition 31 2.3 Methods for studying word stress perception and production 35 2.3.1 Behavioral methods 35 2.3.2 Psychophysiological methods 36 2.3.3 Phonological and phonetic methods 47 3 From Cues to Features 49 3.1 Introduction 50 3.2 The concepts of cue and feature in Psycho- and Sociolinguistics 51 3.2.1 Cue 51 3.2.2 Feature 55 3.2.3 From features to cues, from cues to features 59 3.3 The need for non-native experimental stimuli in Psycholinguistics 59 3.3.1 The validity of stimuli representing language cues and features in experimental designs 61 3.3.2 Mirroring features of non-native English 61 3.4 Considerations in the design of non-native experimental stimuli in Psycholinguistics 63 3.4.1 Methodological challenges 63 3.4.2 Using cues to represent features 64 3.5 Implications for TESOL 66 3.6 Conclusion 67 4 ERP Evidence for Slavic and German Word Stress Cue Sensitivity in English 69 4.1 Introduction 70 4.2 Materials and methods 78 4.2.1 Stimuli and paradigm 78 4.2.2 Participants 81 4.2.3 Experimental procedure 82 4.3 Results 84 4.4 Discussion 89 4.4.1 Slavic and German word stress sensitivity in English 89 4.4.2 Applications in language technologies and learning 97 4.5 Conclusion 98 5 Czech English Word Stress Features 101 5.1 Introduction 102 5.2 Methodology 105 5.2.1 Participants 105 5.2.2 Interview schedule 105 5.2.3 Transcription and data analysis 106 5.3 Results and Discussion 109 5.3.1 Czech English features 109 5.3.2 Word stress features 120 5.4 Applications 125 5.5 Conclusion 132 6 Training English Word Stress Perception and Production with Technology 135 6.1 Introduction 136 6.2 Background 137 6.2.1 Teaching word stress 137 6.2.2 Technology in word stress teaching 139 6.3 HVPT tool concept 141 6.4 Discussion 144 6.5 Conclusion 145 7 General Conclusion 147 7.1 Summary and conclusions 147 7.2 Contributions to the field 150 7.3 Limitations and outlook 153 References 157 A Appendix 189 A.1 Data availability 189 A.2 German summary 189 A.3 Supplementary materials 192 A.4 Eigenständigkeitserklärung 20

    No full text
The impact of bionic prostheses on users' self-perceptions: A qualitative study

    No full text
Bionic devices for reestablishing or augmenting users' capabilities (e.g., bionic prostheses or exoskeletons) are becoming increasingly common. While prior research examined how such devices affect others' perceptions of their users, little is known about how these devices affect users' self-image and -perception, and the corresponding theory is scarce. To account for this gap, we conducted semi-structured interviews with users of bionic upper limb prostheses to obtain insights into their self- and meta-perceptions. Results of our qualitative analysis indicate that using bionic prostheses influences the social (self-) perception of bionics users in multiple ways, such that users describe themselves as being seen as more competent by others and treated differently after receiving the bionic prosthesis in comparison to simpler models. Results imply a somewhat complex dual identity among users in the sense that the bionic device instills competence, but disability-related feelings of stigma are present simultaneously. Despite being exploratory, our findings thus indicate that using bionic devices affects users' self-perception, stereotypes, and interpersonal perceptions. The ongoing proliferation of restoring devices and the introduction of augmenting technologies in future work contexts, for example, might thus have unintended social consequences that need to be accounted for
