Human-Centered Workplace Design for Remote Operators when Shunting Automated Rail Systems
In the upcoming decade, a serious skilled labor shortage of professional train drivers is expected . The automation of specific use cases of train drives like shunting maneuvers might be the beginning of fully autonomous train transport and may help to encounter challenges due to the decreased number of skilled train drivers. Here, teleoperation could support implement ing automated trains for drives between depot s and platform s Theref ore, t he workflow of shunting maneuvers is presented by a hierarchical task analysis that was conducted with professional train drivers' activities in real world test drives and follow up interviews. Moreover, a classification of these tasks was conducted. Based on that, the requirements of a human c e ntered design of workplaces for remote train operation s as well as the technical implementation of the automation was evaluated and discussed in an interdisciplinary team. Results reveal ed , for example, that tr ain operators need to provide radio communication readiness and driving releases during the implementation of the train’s automation . Based on the findings, a prototypical workstation for the remote operator will be designed in a human centered process following DIN ISO 9241 210:2021 that will be iteratively tested and evaluated within the course of the research process . In addition to workstation design and technical requirements, the future tasks of the train operator need to be clarified t o avoid prolonged reaction times or fatigue. The project activities aim for extending and complementing the current field of research and supporting smooth train operation
Development of drift correction and lifetime extension methodology for electrochemical sensors
Excessive nitrite in water poses serious health and environmental risks, requiring reliable long-term monitoring. Electrochemical sensors offer advantages due to their sensitivity, low cost, and ease of use; however, they suffer from aging, which affects accuracy over time. This thesis addresses this limitation by developing and optimizing a nitrite sensor based on screen-printed carbon electrodes modified with electrodeposited gold. The sensor achieved promising performance, including a 15-day shelf life. A multidisciplinary study investigated aging mechanisms using electrochemical techniques (voltammetry, impedance spectroscopy) and physical methods (Raman, FTIR, SEM). The double-layer capacitance (Cdl) was identified as the most aging-sensitive parameter. An accelerated aging protocol in contaminated solution was designed to simulate long-term behavior. A systematic methodology for lifetime estimation, drift correction, and life extension was proposed. Applying an anti-fouling polymer layer extended the shelf life to 18 days. A novel correction method ensured accuracy despite aging and was validated in tap and groundwater. The approach enables sensor optimization and reliability in environmental applications.:CHAPTER 1. Plasma-activated EB-PVD for High-Throughput Continuous Coating of Bipolar Plates
For highly productive and cost-effective manufacturing of bipolar plates for electrolyzers and fuel cells, the transition of state-of-the-art technologies to roll-to-roll processes is a promising approach for the so called “pre-coating'. To this end, protective coatings such as Ti thin films have been deposited by plasma-activated electron beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) using spotless arcactivated deposition (SAD) in an in-line process applied on thin metal foils as well as on carbon-filled polymers as feedstock materials for bipolar plates. Using plasma-activated EB-PVD, dense coatings with high corrosion resistance can be applied to metal strip before embossing into bipolar plates. Coating the material prior to the embossing process is considered as a decisive step for upscaling production in the roll-to-roll process. One challenge is to achieve high formability of the coating, which requires a dense and nanocrystalline microstructure. However, in addition to microstructural effects, substrate temperature limits must also be considered, especially when processing temperature-sensitive or very thin substrates.
For this purpose, pieces of 250 mm wide and 100 μm thick metal foils as well as on 150 mm wide highly filled graphite compound foils of polymer plate were plasma pre-treated. Subsequently, 100-200 nm thick Ti layers were deposited by EB-PVD with and without SAD at a process speed of 10 m/min. FESEM and XRD analyses show that nanocrystalline and denser layers were deposited by SAD process. During deformation by 180° bending test on Ti-coated steel samples, cracks appeared in the films prepared without SAD, whereas the SAD-deposited Ti films showed very ductile behavior without crack formation during bending.:1 Introduction and Motivation

Geometry optimization and efficiency increase of HFI welding processes while using SMC-impeders
During HFI welding, an AC inductor generates an electromagnetic field, which induces eddy currents in the pipe workpiece. These eddy currents lead to a resistive heating of the pipes. Magnetic field concentrators, which are conventionally made of ferrite, are used to concentrate the magnetic field and localize the heating in the strip edges of the tube and thus minimize the power loss as far as possible. Optimizing these impeders is one way of increasing the efficiency of the tube longitudinal seam welding process. By using SMC materials in optimized impeder systems for the inductive longitudinal seam welding of tubes, energy savings of around 43 % were achieved for the specific setup. Furthermore, a service life of tS,SMC > 20 h was achieved, which is at least as long as in a conventional system. The geometric machinability of the SMC materials also enables the impeder to be adapted to more complex profile geometries.:1. Introduction

Thesen 181This thesis presents the development of a novel pressure probe combining a fiber optic Fabry-Pérot-Interferometer and Fiber Bragg Gratings as a hybrid probe. The application is minimally invasive manometry of the vascular system as well as hollow organs. The simultaneous evaluation of several pressure reading points enables the detection of spatially and temporally distributed pressure. The diagnostic relevance of the hybrid probe for the analysis of stenoses severity is demonstrated at the application for coronary heart disease and lumbar spinal stenosis. By means of experimental in vitro
investigations as well as an in vivo animal trial the hybrid probe's performance for distributed pressure sensing is assessed. Furthermore, this confirms the potential of the new development for medical diagnostics. Based on the clinical data obtained, a development perspective for a medical device for minimally invasive diagnostics is presented.:Abkürzungs- und Formelzeichenverzeichnis ix

Due to the different coefficients of thermal expansion of the two materials, which results in strong residual compressive stresses in the diamond layer as an effect of cooling from the coating to room temperature, the coating of steel with diamond has so far only been possible to a very limited extent, as thicker layers in particular tend to flake off. However, in combination with the TiNB intermediate layer, an interface was generated and has enabled a closed and homogeneous, adhesive CVD diamond layer with a thickness of up to 40 µm on X46Cr13. Within the project it could be determined that a substrate surface defined by ultrasonic vibration superimposed face milling has a significant influence on the distribution of the layer-inherent residual stresses. This was achieved by the help of FE analyses carried out on the cooling characteristics of the diamond layer-steel substrate composite and residual stress measurements using Raman spectroscopy in the deposited CVD diamond layers on steel. The relatively good adhesive strength of the diamond layers is also attributed to the reduction in residual cooling stresses due to the large increase in volume of this material during austenite-bainite transformation.
Based on these results, the properties of CVD diamond-coated samples with a higher heat capacity and from a 'less favorable' (higher bainite starting temperature) transforming steel (X40CrMoV5-1) with the resulting higher residual cooling stresses were investigated. This extended both the basic understanding of the adhesion mechanisms and the potential applica-tion possibilities. Due to its special vibration properties, it is used, for example, as a sonotrode material in the ultrasonic welding of aluminum components. This was the basis for the final application example, whereby 'micro-macrostructured' and diamond-coated sonotrode tips were compared with uncoated steel tips. Aluminium sheet samples of the alloy EN AW-6082 were selected as the components to be joined. The material is characterized, among other things, by a very good weldability. The results showed a (subjectively perceived) significantly lower tendency to adhere to the CVD diamond-coated sonotrode compared to the uncoated sonotrode, thus confirming the approach of the research project.:1. Comicsprache – leichte Sprache?
If has frequently been claimed that the language of comics is “bad” language. This paper tests the hypothesis whether the language used in comics is therefore particularly easy to understand. To this end, a 4,900-word corpus of English-language comics, comic strips and cartoons was compiled, and a readability score based on word and sentence length was calculated. While the data on word frequency first seems inconclusive, the combined results suggest that the language of comics is indeed relatively easy to understand, and that reading comics can therefore be particularly recommended to language learners
Nanomaterial enhanced laser-induced graphene electrodes for electrochemical nitrate and nitrite sensors
High levels of nitrates and nitrites harm human health and aquatic ecosystems, and their concentration varies dynamically, necessitating their simultaneous detection. Among electrodes for electrochemical sensors, Laser-induced graphene (LIG) offers a flexible, one-step alternative, yet CO2 laser interactions with Kapton remain underexplored. Optimization studies are not performed over entire range and defects on the surface are overlooked which are crucial for high electrochemical activity.
This thesis develops LIG-based electrochemical sensors modified with nanomaterials for simultaneous nitrate and nitrite detection at a physiologically relevant pH. A detailed study on laser parameters, supported by finite element simulations, and well elaborated statistical optimization resulted in electrode performance, that surpassed the current electrodes using graphene. LIG fibers, formerly termed insulating, were proven conductive and used as functionalization material to develop electrochemical sensor.
LIG electrodes modified with silver dendrites for nitrate and LIF-copper phthalocyanine for nitrite achieved limit of detection (LoD) of 0.46 µM at pH 2 and 0.162 µM at pH 5 respectively and wide linear ranges (10–10000 µM). At pH 7, obtained LoD and linear range are comparable to previous works operating at optimal pH. The interference with nitrite at pH 2 is avoided by operating at pH 7. Finally, the sensors successfully quantify both ions in bacteria- and algae-containing solutions.:CHAPTER 1. INTRODUCTION

This contribution investigates how words denoting time of day (e.g.morning, Morgen) are used in Standard English and German. It presents a corpus analysis of such words in the British National Corpus and the similarly structured DWDS Kernkorpus, which correlates their use with the 24 hours of the day. Since the frame of reference is the same in the two languages, this parallel approach not only allows for a more precise temporal mapping of the word field of times of day than ever before, but it also permits an unprecedented comparison with regard to possible translation equivalents in English and German
