Deformation behavior of CFRP bistable open-section cylindrical boom for lunar deployable structure
With the recent expansion of lunar exploitation, there is a need for structural components to deploy and support solar cells or antennas on the Moon. Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) bistable open-section cylindrical booms have been investigated as a deployable structure in a microgravity environment. In this paper, the deformation of the CFRP bistable boom under a point load was investigated in order to apply the boom to a structural member that holds loads in the lunar gravity environment. First, theoretical solutions for tension, compression, bending, torsion, and natural vibration of an open-section cylinder were derived. A finite element analysis model was then constructed. To confirm the validity of these models, tests were conducted on a 2 m CFRP open-section cylindrical boom and the results were compared. The characteristics of the open-section cylindrical boom shape, which has the centroid and shear center away from the center of the cylinder, easily cause bending-torsional coupling deformation, and the behavior differs greatly depending on the eccentricity and loading direction.journal articl
