Basic research on pinching cultivation to reduce lodging damage and increase yield of Japanese okra(Abelmoschus esculentus L.)

The main okra(Abelmoschus esculentus L.)production areas in Japan are located in the warm southwestern region. The harvest period for Japanese okra includes the rainy and typhoon seasons. In the warm southwestern region, wind-dominated typhoons frequently occur, resulting in lodging damage and reduced okra yield. The main training cultivation method for okra involves single-stem training, in which the main stem is allowed to grow while the leaves and lateral shoots are pruned as required. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to apply pinching treatments that increase lodging resistance and yield in okra cultivation. This study conducted two experiments. In Experiment 1, growth and yield differences between pinching cultivation,main-stem and lateral-shoot training cultivation, and single-stem training cultivation were compared. In Experiment 2, growth and yield differences between pinching cultivation and single-stem training cultivation were compared. The study results revealed that in both experiments, pinching treatment delayed the beginning date of the harvest period of okra by 7–14 days; promoted the growth of the aerial and underground parts; extended the harvest period by up to 52 days compared with single-stem training cultivation; and produced yields equal to or higher than those of single-stem training cultivation. With pinching treatment, okra tended to have superior root spread, with the main-stem diameter being as thick as or significantly thicker than that of the main-stem and lateral-shoot training and single-stem training cultivation, suggesting that both the aerial and underground parts of the plant may have been able to withstand the typhoon winds.journal articl
