    The impact of yield curve control under different regimes on Japanese Government bonds and swap markets in the super long term

    Japanese Government Bonds (JGBs) and swap markets in the maturities of 10, 15, 20, and 30 years increased in volatility volatilities after the Bank of Japan (BOJ) expanded the upper limit of yield curve control (YCC) from .2% to .25% on March 19, 2021. The entire sample period is divided in half.Market segmentation is observed between JGB and swap markets in the first half of the YCC. They are integrated except for the maturity of 10 years in the second half of the YCC. In other words, arbitrage works between two markets. After the BOJ expanded the upper limit of the YCC to .25%, structural change occurred in the super long term in relation to JGB and swap markets. The decision by the BOJ has contributed to the normalization of the market function because there has been more room for the benchmark JGB yield of 10 years to move more actively.journal articl

    A Study on Estimation of Static Capacitor Capacity in Distribution Systems Using Equal Power Factor Lines

    In recent years, the diversity of nonlinear loads has increased due to advances in power electronics technology. Additionally, renewable energies have attracted attention, and the number of distributed power sources connected to the power grid is growing rapidly. These sources generate harmonics, which negatively impact the power quality of the distribution system. Various studies have been conducted on this topic [1–3]. Since the harmonic currents from the sources flow where they can easily flow, they often flow into the static capacitors (SCs) with low impedance. These harmonic currents then cause problems such as overheating of series reactors in the capacitor facilities and overheating or noise generation in equipment (transformers, etc.) on their way through the capacitor facilities [4]. To counter these problems, it is necessary to calculate the flow of harmonics in the distribution system [5]. When calculating the harmonics flow, it is essential that the capacity of SCs is known [6]. However, current load diversification makes adapting the conventional method, which uses the correlation between active and reactive power, difficult. Therefore, this paper proposes a method to estimate the capacity of SCs with fewer measurement points without relying on the correlation between active power and reactive power using the equal power factor lines of the power distribution system.     Data Survey of Seismically Isolated Buildings in the Expected Tsunami Inundation Areas in Japan

    Tsunamis strike frequently around the world, causing enormous damage. Examples include the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami and the 2011 earthquake off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku. Japan is one of the countries most affected by tsunamis. Detailed data about the number of buildings in the expected tsunami inundation areas in Japan—including by use and inundation depth—are therefore useful in planning buildings not only in Japan, but also in other countries where tsunami damage is expected. Among more than 5000 seismically isolated buildings (SIBs) that have been constructed in Japan, however, only a very few were designed with tsunami countermeasures. In some SIBs, tsunamis have even inundated the seismic isolation device. The relationship between the locations planned for future SIBs and the expected tsunami inundation areas is therefore very important. In this work, we have surveyed approximately 1600 SIBs based on design data provided by performance-evaluation organizations and have used the data published by each prefecture to prepare tsunami inundation maps. Our survey results show that Kanagawa and Osaka have large percentages of SIBs constructed in the expected tsunami inundation areas. In addition, the largest percentage of all the SIBs in the expected tsunami inundation areas—40%—has been built in areas where the inundation depth is expected to be 1–3 m. Even buildings like hospitals and government buildings, which must maintain their functions during disasters, have been constructed in areas where the expected inundation depth is 5–10m.journal articl

    Machine learning detection of epileptic seizure onset zone from iEEG

    Accurate identification of seizure onset zones (SOZ) is essential for the surgical treatment of epilepsy. This narrative review examines recent advances in machine learning approaches for SOZ localization using intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) data. Existing studies are analyzed while addressing key questions: What machine learning techniques are used for SOZ localization? How effective are these methods? What are the limitations, and what solutions can drive further progress in the field? This narrative review examined peer-reviewed studies that employed machine learning techniques for SOZ localization using iEEG data. The selected studies were analyzed to identify trends in machine learning applications, performance metrics, benefits, and challenges associated with SOZ identification. The review highlights the increasing adoption of machine learning for SOZ localization, mostly with supervised approaches. Particularly support vector machine (SVM) using high frequency oscillation (HFO) biomarker feature being the most prevalent. High accuracy and sensitivity, especially in studies with smaller sample sizes are reported. However, patient-wise validation reveals limited generalizability. Additionally, ambiguity in SOZ definition and the scarcity of open-access iEEG datasets continue to hinder progress and reproducibility in the field. Machine learning offers significant potential for advancing SOZ localization. Development of more robust algorithms, integration of multimodal data, and greater model interpretability, can improve model reliability, ensure consistency, and enhance real-world applicability, thereby transforming the future of SOZ localization.journal articl
