A Framework for Automatic Generation of Spoken Question-Answering Data
No full textThe authors would like to thank Şeniz Demir for providing the Turkish Wikipedia dataset, Emrah Budur for providing the English to Turkish machine translated SQuAD dataset and the anonymous reviewers for their valuable feedback.This paper describes a framework to automatically generate a spoken question answering (QA) dataset. The framework consists of a question generation (QG) module to generate questions automatically from given text documents, a text-to-speech (TTS) module to convert the text documents into spoken form and an automatic speech recognition (ASR) module to transcribe the spoken content. The final dataset contains question-answer pairs for both the reference text and ASR transcriptions as well as the audio files corresponding to each reference text. For QG and ASR systems we used pre-trained multilingual encoder-decoder transformer models and fine-tuned these models using a limited amount of manually generated QA data and TTS-based speech data, respectively. As a proof of concept, we investigated the proposed framework for Turkish and generated the Turkish Question Answering (TurQuAse) dataset using Wikipedia articles. Manual evaluation of the automatically generated question-answer pairs and QA performance evaluation with state-of-the-art models on TurQuAse show that the proposed framework is efficient for automatically generating spoken QA datasets. To the best of our knowledge, TurQuAse is the first publicly available spoken question answering dataset for Turkish. The proposed framework can be easily extended to other languages where a limited amount of QA data is available. © 2022 Association for Computational Linguistics.2-s2.0-8514989719
Jute and luffa fibers: Physical, acoustical, and mechanical properties
No full textIn this study, the physical, acoustical, and mechanical properties of jute and luffa fibers are presented. It should be noted that, although the main materials of jute and luffa fibers are cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, the mechanical properties of jute and luffa fibers and the acoustical properties of jute and fiber samples can be quite different. It is worth noting that jute fibers are bidirectional while luffa fibers are random-oriented. Furthermore, the diameters and lengths of these two fibers can be quite different. One problem with these natural fibers is that very different values for their diameter, length, and density have been reported in the literature. Therefore, the diameter, length, and density of a huge number of jute and luffa fibers were measured using precise equipment to determine their average values and deviations in this study. In addition to the results of these measurements, the results of a comprehensive literature review on the physical, acoustical, and mechanical properties of jute and fibers and their green samples (i.e., fiber samples without any resin) were presented in this study. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd. The antecedents of career change intention in middle-level managers: the role of job and career satisfaction
No full textPurpose – This investigates the interrelationships between job and career satisfaction and career change
intention through the extension of the theory of planned behavior (TPB).
Design/methodology/approach – The data for the study is collected from 219 top and middle-level
managers and analyzed through partial least squares path structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM).
Findings – Findings indicate that job and career satisfaction have a significant and negative impact on
personal attitude toward career change and subjective norms, whereas all three constructs of the TPB influence the intention to change career. In addition, the mediation of personal attitude and subjective norm pathways were found to be significant for both job and career satisfaction and career change intention relationships, while no mediation effect was identified for the perceived behavior control construct of the TPB.
Research limitations/implications – The results suggest important theoretical and practical implications.
First, a novel model of mediation between job and career satisfaction and the intention to turn away from an existing career is introduced between job and career satisfaction and career change intention associations for testing the full TPB framework.
Practical implications – The findings imply that the impact of cognitive factors, including having a positive
opinion about the potential outcomes of switching to a new career, the level of pressure exerted by significant third parties about making a career change, and the self-belief about making this change happen should be closely investigated when examining the determinants of career change intention.
Originality/value – To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first empirical research study that tests

Organizational humor as making our work more meaningful: mediation by crafting job resources
No full textIn the present study, we examined the impact of humor’s positive functions on the perception of a job’s meaningfulness. We argued that liberating and stress-relieving humor act as job resources enhancing job crafting to increase social and structural resources to experience meaningfulness. We hypothesized that crafting the job to increase structural and social resources would mediate the link between organizational humor functions (i.e., liberating and stress-relieving) and meaningfulness. We conducted a cross-sectional study among 200 Turkish employees from different occupations. Our results revealed that increasing structural resources mediated the relationship between liberating humor and meaningfulness, while this mediation was partially for stress-relieving humor. The mediating role of increasing social resources was partial and conditional for both types of organizational humor functions. Identification of material viscoelastic properties using the motion of a rigid sphere located at tissue-mimicking material interface in response to a dynamic force
No full textThe motion of a rigid sphere located at tissue-mimicking material interface in response to a dynamic force of short duration for the purpose of the determination of material viscoelastic properties was investigated in this study. The experiments were performed using a rigid sphere located at tissue-like material (gelatin phantom) interfaces. An electromagnet was used to apply the desired dynamic force to the sphere and a high-speed camera was used to track the movement of the sphere. Using the experimentally measured response of the sphere and the dynamic response of the sphere predicted by a sophisticated analytical model of the sphere located at a medium interface, the shear modulus, density and damping of the tissue-mimicking material were determined. The procedure followed in this study successfully produced the shear modulus, density and viscous damping ratio of the 20% (and 30%) gelation phantom as 1320 Pa, 1040 kg/m3 and 0.12 (and 2580 Pa, 1180 kg/m3 and 0.2), respectively. As the sophisticated theoretical model that is valid for small and large sphere displacements includes many parameters for the system such as the mass and size of the sphere, the inertia force of the medium involved in motion and the radiation damping due to shear waves and the experimental setup is very straightforward, it is believed that the procedure proposed in this study can be widely exploited to identify accurate material viscoelastic properties in practice.2-s2.0-85134775550Temmu
