Development and use of theory of mind in social and cultural context

    No full text
Theory of mind (ToM) is a key social-cognitive skill that allows individuals to understand and attribute mental states to others; it facilitates relationships and helps individuals navigate the social world. Thus, it is likely influenced by social and cultural contexts. In this article, we review studies that examine the potential ways through which sociocultural context interacts with the development and use of ToM in Western and non-Western societies. First, we summarize findings documenting the link between culture and timing of ToM acquisition. Second, we examine cross-cultural studies on how culture can be related to the sequential development of different dimensions of ToM. Third, we discuss when and how cultural group membership of the targets influences the use of ToM. Finally, we suggest avenues for research so the field can understand more comprehensively the dynamic interactions between sociocultural context and the development and use of ToM.WOS:0008983767000012-s2.0-85144050792Social Sciences Citation IndexArticleUluslararasi isbirligi ile yapilmayan - HAYIRYÖK - 2022-23Arali

Site characterization for site response analysis in performance based approach

    No full text
The local seismic hazard analysis would yield probabilistic uniform hazard acceleration response spectrum on the engineering bedrock outcrop. Thus, site-specific response analyses need to produce a probabilistic uniform hazard acceleration response spectrum on the ground surface. A possible performance based approach for this purpose requires a probabilistic estimation of soil stratification and engineering properties of encountered soil layers in the soil profile. The major uncertainties in site-specific response analysis arise from the variabilities of (a) local seismic hazard assessment, (b) selection and scaling of the hazard compatible input earthquake time histories, (c) soil stratification and engineering properties of encountered soil and rock layers, and (d) method of site response analysis. Even though the uncertainties related to first two items have primary importance on the outcome of the site-specific response analyses, the discussion in this article focuses on the observed variability and level of uncertainty in site conditions, related to soil stratification, thickness and type of encountered soil layers and their engineering properties, depth of ground water table and bedrock and properties of the engineering bedrock. Thus, one option may be conducting site response analyses for large number of soil profiles produced by Monte Carlo simulations for the investigated site to assess probabilistic performance based design acceleration spectra and acceleration time histories calculated on the ground surface based on 1D, 2D, or 3D site response analysis with respect to different performance levels.2-s2.0-85143206705Eylü

    LDPC kodlarında artık veri kullanımı

In distributed storage systems/coded caching systems, padding operations should be performed when the encoded data cannot be divided by the number of storage nodes evenly. Thus, extra zero values are stored in one of the nodes to balance each node’s storage content. In this study, distribution of data to storage nodes with no padding was investigated for distributed caching context in which a base station and devices both store the coded data. In other words, no redundancy (no-padding) is included into the encoded data. This approach is named as residual data distribution. LDPC codes are selected as the erasure code due to their low complexity encode/decode operations. Moreover, performance comparisons were conducted between using traditional data distribution approach (with padding) and using residual data (use of no-padding) (standard) in terms of repair time. In our work, the effect of no-padding data usage on the repair time and the ratios of storage savings have been also demonstrated.

Fostering equality in education: The blockchain business model for higher education (BBM-HE)

    No full text
This paper seeks to address which business model in higher education that fosters SDG 4, is adequate for the post-pandemic period. To that end, it introduces the “Blockchain Business Model for Higher Education” (BBM-HE) and a transformed business model canvas framework based on existing literature, concepts, theories and findings relating to most of the pressing issues in higher education from the present study. To determine these issues, secondary data is used in the qualitative research design by applying inductive content analysis techniques to online reports. The originality of this study lies in the “adaptive” perspective to the requirements of the post-pandemic higher education landscape, which consists of modifications to the core elements of higher education, the integration of blockchain technology into the entire system, and a stronger approach to sustainability practice through sustainability tokens. The envisaged model sets out to provide a roadmap for all stakeholders, but most importantly, “decentralized” higher education institutions of the future and the “employable skills-seeking” proactive students all over the world, as opposed to the former “solely degree-focused and affluent” consumers of educational offerings. This study contributes to higher education literature in terms of business models, blockchains, pandemics, and sustainability.WOS:0007682674000012-s2.0-85126280194Social Sciences Citation IndexArticleUluslararası işbirliği ile yapılmayan - HAYIRMarchYÖK - 2021-22Mar

In this study, it is aimed to predict whether customers operating in the factoring sector will continue to trade in the next three months after the last transaction date, using data- driven machine learning models, based on their past transaction movements and their risk, limit and company data. As a result of the models established, Loss Analysis (Churn) of two different customer groups (Real and Legal factory) wascarried out. It was estimated by the XGBoost model with anF1 Score of 74% and 77%. Thanks to this modeling, it was aimed to increase the retention rate of customers through special promotions and campaigns to be made to these customer groups, together with the prediction of the customerswho will leave. Thanks to the increase in retention rates, a direct contribution to the transaction volume on a company basis was ensured.2-s2.0-85138736238Mayı

19 - Identification of the elastic and damping properties of jute and luffa fiber-reinforced biocomposites

    No full text
Although there are many studies in the literature on the static mechanical properties of biomaterials such as tensile strength, the dynamic mechanical properties of biomaterials such as modal loss factors have not been investigated in detail. In this study, the Young’s moduli and damping (or loss factors) of some jute and luffa fiber-reinforced biocomposites are investigated. The effects of fiber/resin ratio and thickness on the mechanical properties of the jute and luffa composites are identified via an experimental approach. For this purpose, acoustic and structural frequency response functions of some homogeneous and hybrid jute and luffa composite plates with different fiber/resin ratios and thicknesses are measured. By analyzing the measured frequency response functions using the circle-fit method, the modal frequencies and loss factors of the homogeneous and hybrid composite plates are determined. By assuming that the homogeneous plates are isotropic, the same plates are modeled using the finite element method, and by comparing the experimental and theoretical natural frequencies, the elastic properties of the homogeneous plates are determined. In addition, the same homogeneous plates are modeled by considering an anisotropic material model, and the associated material properties are determined. By using the identified material properties, the finite element models of the hybrid composite plates are developed, and by comparing their experimental and theoretical natural frequencies, the identified elastic material properties are evaluated and validated.2-s2.0-85129442272Oca
