Joint multi-nanopore sequencing for reliable data retrieval in nucleic acid storage
Pub. No: US20230215516A1A nucleic acid storage system (100) that uses nanopore sequencing to read data values chemically embedded in oligonucleotides includes a membrane (102), a voltage source (108), and a nucleic acid strand (110). The membrane (102) has a plurality of nanopores (104) that are stacked upon one another in a multi-nanopore arrangement. The voltage source (108) is configured to direct voltage across the plurality of nanopores (104). The nucleic acid strand (110) including the oligonucleotides is threaded through each of the plurality of nanopores (104) within the membrane (102). A separate base signal (118) is generated from the nucleic acid strand (110) being threaded through each of the plurality of nanopores (104), and Recursive Neural Networks can be used to estimate a signal shape for each oligonucleotide. Recurrent Convolutional Neural Networks and noise predictive data detection algorithms can be used based on the estimated signal shapes to sequence the oligonucleotides.Hazira

Near-Fault Earthquake Ground Motion and Seismic Isolation Design
Seismic isolation is one of the most reliable passive structural control techniques with adequately established standards for the earthquake protection of structures from earthquakes. However, it has been shown that the seismic isolation systems may not function the best for the near-fault ground motions, since in the proximity of a capable fault, the ground motions are significantly affected by the rupture mechanism and may generate high demands on the isolation system and the structure. In fact, several earthquake resistant design codes state that the seismically isolated structures located at near-fault sites should be designed by considering larger seismic demands than the demand on structures at far-field sites. When the fault ruptures in forward direction to the site most of the seismic energy arrives in coherent long-period ground velocity pulses. The ground-motion prediction equations (GMPEs) typically cannot account for such effects with limited distance metrics and lack adequate data at large magnitudes and near distances. For the reliable earthquake design of the isolated structure in near fault conditions that meets the performance objectives, the 3D design basis ground motion(s) need to be appropriately assessed. Measures in the design of the isolation system, such as modifications in the stiffness and damping characteristics, as well as in the limitation of vertical effects are needed. The behavior of the base-isolated buildings under near-fault (NF) ground motions with fling-step and forward-directivity characteristics are investigated with a rational assessment of design-basis near-fault ground motion, are investigated in a parametric format. The parametric study includes several variables, including the structural system flexibility; number of stories; isolation system characteristic (yield) strength, and the isolation periods related to the post-elastic stiffness. Furthermore, the effect of additional damping by viscous dampers were tested for some selected cases. Important findings observed from the parametric performance results and the overall conclusions of the study are provided.Politecnico TorinoWOS:0009635759000092-s2.0-85148693217Conference Proceedings Citation Index – ScienceProceedings PaperUluslararası işbirliği ile yapılmayan - HAYIRNisanYÖK - 2022-2
Turkish unmanned combat aerial vehicle capacity in the framework of its hard power-driven foreign policy
This thesis examines the capacity of Turkish armed unmanned aerial vehicles. To salvage foreign dependency on weapons procurement, Turkey has aimed to develop its own domestic weapons production capacity long before the Justice and Development party government. The evolution of national weapons production capacity of Turkey is examined and documented within the framework of its recent Turkish foreign policy as of 2010 to 2023. 'Dronization' of Turkish foreign policy has followed the militarization in recent years. Accordingly, the research question aimed to be answered is "What is the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle capacity that stands out in the militarization of Turkish Foreign Policy? How has it progressed?" The research method used to answer this question was descriptive case analysis. This method was chosen in order to describe and examine the developments that emerged for the first time in Turkey. Therefore, this thesis aims at examining and describing rather than theorization, and works towards creating sources and a pathway for subsequent studies. Turkish drone capacity is studied in the light of the factors giving way to the recent militarization of Turkey's foreign policy. The systems included in the Turkish national combat drones inventory and the work of their developers are explained. This study also illustrates how unmanned combat systems, which have a significant impact on the Turkish military inventory and export figures, are discussed in foreign media. The literature review undertaken focuses on relevant official documents, legislation, open source reports, and news analysis. All of the opinions and suggestions in the thesis are my personal ideas that I have shaped as a result of the research I have conducted, and they do not reflect the opinion of any person or institution
Turkish Data-to-Text Generation Using Sequence-to-Sequence Neural Networks
TUBITAK-ARDEB [117E977]This work is supported by TUBITAK-ARDEB under the grant number 117E977.End-to-end data-driven approaches lead to rapid development of language generation and dialogue systems. Despite the need for large amounts of well-organized data, these approaches jointly learn multiple components of the traditional generation pipeline without requiring costly human intervention. End-to-end approaches also enable the use of loosely aligned parallel datasets in system development by relaxing the degree of semantic correspondences between training data representations and text spans. However, their potential in Turkish language generation has not yet been fully exploited. In this work, we apply sequenceto-sequence (Seq2Seq) neural models to Turkish data-to-text generation where the input data given in the form of a meaning representation is verbalized. We explore encoder-decoder architectures with attention mechanism in unidirectional, bidirectional, and stacked recurrent neural network (RNN) models. Our models generate one-sentence biographies and dining venue descriptions using a crowdsourced dataset where all field value pairs that appear in meaning representations are fully captured in reference sentences. To support this work, we also explore the performances of our models on a more challenging dataset, where the content of a meaning representation is too large to fit into a single sentence, and hence content selection and surface realization need to be learned jointly. This dataset is retrieved by coupling introductory sentences of person-related Turkish Wikipedia articles with their contained infobox tables. Our empirical experiments on both datasets demonstrate that Seq2Seq models are capable of generating coherent and fluent biographies and venue descriptions from field value pairs. We argue that the wealth of knowledge residing in our datasets and the insights obtained fromthis study hold the potential to give rise to the development of new end-to-end generation approaches for Turkish and other morphologically rich languages.WOS:0009633949000062-s2.0-85152906599Science Citation Index ExpandedarticleUluslararası işbirliği ile yapılmayan - HAYIRNisanYÖK - 2022-2

The timing database: An open-access, live repository for interval timing studies
NSERC; [RGPIN/3334-2021]This work is funded by NSERC Discovery Grant, RGPIN/3334-2021 to FBInterval timing refers to the ability to perceive and remember intervals in the seconds to minutes range. Our contemporary understanding of interval timing is derived from relatively small-scale, isolated studies that investigate a limited range of intervals with a small sample size, usually based on a single task. Consequently, the conclusions drawn from individual studies are not readily generalizable to other tasks, conditions, and task parameters. The current paper presents a live database that presents raw data from interval timing studies (currently composed of 68 datasets from eight different tasks incorporating various interval and temporal order judgments) with an online graphical user interface to easily select, compile, and download the data organized in a standard format. The Timing Database aims to promote and cultivate key and novel analyses of our timing ability by making published and future datasets accessible as open-source resources for the entire research community. In the current paper, we showcase the use of the database by testing various core ideas based on data compiled across studies (i.e., temporal accuracy, scalar property, location of the point of subjective equality, malleability of timing precision). The Timing Database will serve as the repository for interval timing studies through the submission of new datasets.WOS:0009070649000012-s2.0-8514589567936595180Social Sciences Citation IndexarticleUluslararası işbirliği ile yapılan - EVETŞubatYÖK - 2022-2

The research question, which forms the departure point for this thesis, is 'to what extent states can cooperate against violent nonstate actors and terrorism'. To this end, the policies and cooperation dynamics of the USA and Turkey against PKK/PYD and ISIS are studied. The method followed is the joint application of discourse analysis and process tracing. The process analysis was conducted by analyzing the discourses of people in the management of different institutions, from heads of state to the ministry of defense, from foreign ministers to government spokespersons between 2011-2018 and comparing them with their actions in the field. Various news sources were scanned in this time period, and the operations carried out against terrorist organizations in the field were examined in tandem with the literature review. Discourses of people in state institutions were obtained from publicly available sources and cross-checked by researching and confirming from various sources. The opinions and suggestions in the thesis do not reflect the opinion of any person or institution, and belong to the researcher
