p-adic points of rational Witt spaces
In these thesis we explore how rational Witt vectors can be used to refine and extend the ring-valued points of a scheme X. Our primary goal is to understand the behaviour of such points valued in a mixed characteristic rank one valuation ring. When X is affine we show how these points can be interpreted as untilts of the tilt of the valuation ring lying over X. This is done using perfectoid techniques and diamonds, generalising a previous result of Deninger to higher dimensional X. Additionally, it is shown that the elements of the infinitesimal period ring defined by the scheme act injectively as functions on the new set of points set. This result uses lifting theorems and the reduced fibre theorem. Furthermore, in commutative algebra a bijection is proven relating morphisms with a group action on the domain
Publication Counts in Context: Normalization Using Query and Reference Terms in PubMed
This article discusses the extensive use of publication counts as indicators of trends in the scientific activities of individual researchers, research groups, and entire disciplines. However, with the growing number of articles in general, these counts might produce false impressions among scientists. We propose a straightforward yet effective normalization method, which enables further context of publication counts by using a query and a reference term. Additionally, an open access implementation is readily available on the PubMed Normalization website
Downregulation of interleukin 6 signaling might reduce the risk of periodontitis: a drug target Mendelian randomization study
Aim: Interleukin 6 (IL-6) is considered to play a role in the dysbiotic host response in the development of periodontitis. While the inhibition of the IL-6 receptor using monoclonal antibodies is a well-established therapy for some diseases, so far, its potential benefit in patients with periodontitis has not been examined. We tested the association of genetically proxied downregulation of IL-6 signaling with periodontitis to explore whether downregulation of IL-6 signaling could represent a viable treatment target for periodontitis, Materials and methods: As proxies for IL-6 signaling downregulation, we selected 52 genetic variants in close vicinity of the gene encoding IL-6 receptor that were associated with lower circulating C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of 575 531 participants of European ancestry from the UK Biobank and the Cohorts for Heart and Aging Research in Genomic Epidemiology (CHARGE) consortium. Associations with periodontitis were tested with inverse-variance weighted Mendelian randomization in a study of 17 353 cases and 28 210 controls of European descent in the Gene-Lifestyle Interactions in Dental Endpoints (GLIDE) consortium. In addition, the effect of CRP reduction independent of the IL-6 pathway was assessed.
Results: Genetically proxied downregulation of IL-6 signaling was associated with lower odds of periodontitis (odds ratio (OR) = 0.81 per 1-unit decrement in log-CRP levels; 95% confidence interval (CI): [0.66;0.99]; P = 0.0497). Genetically proxied reduction of CRP independent of the IL-6 pathway had a similar effect (OR = 0.81; 95% CI: [0.68; 0.98]; P = 0.0296). Conclusion: In conclusion, genetically proxied downregulation of IL-6 signaling was associated with lower odds of periodontitis and CRP might be a causal target for the effect of IL-6 on the risk of periodontitis
Dry side of the core: a meta-analysis addressing the original nature of the ABA signalosome at the onset of seed imbibition
The timing of seedling emergence is a major agricultural and ecological fitness trait, and seed germination is controlled by a complex molecular network including phytohormone signalling. One such phytohormone, abscisic acid (ABA), controls a large array of stress and developmental processes, and researchers have long known it plays a crucial role in repressing germination. Although the main molecular components of the ABA signalling pathway have now been identified, the molecular mechanisms through which ABA elicits specific responses in distinct organs is still enigmatic. To address the fundamental characteristics of ABA signalling during germination, we performed a meta-analysis focusing on the Arabidopsis dry seed proteome as a reflexion basis. We combined cutting-edge proteome studies, comparative functional analyses, and protein interaction information with genetic and physiological data to redefine the singular composition and operation of the ABA core signalosome from the onset of seed imbibition. In addition, we performed a literature survey to integrate peripheral regulators present in seeds that directly regulate core component function. Although this may only be the tip of the iceberg, this extended model of ABA signalling in seeds already depicts a highly flexible system able to integrate a multitude of information to fine-tune the progression of germination
Acetobacteraceae as exopolysaccharide producers: Current state of knowledge and further perspectives
Exopolysaccharides formation against harmful biotic and abiotic environmental influences is common among bacteria. By using renewable resources as a substrate, exopolysaccharides represent a sustainable alternative to fossil-based polymers as rheological modifiers in food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical applications. The family of 'Acetobacteraceae', traditionally associated with fermented food products, has demonstrated their ability to produce a wide range of structural and functional different polymers with interesting physicochemical properties. Several strains are well known for their production of homopolysaccharides of high industrial importance, such as levan and bacterial cellulose. Moreover, some 'Acetobacteraceae' are able to form acetan-like heteropolysaccharides with a high structural resemblance to xanthan. This mini review summarizes the current knowledge and recent trends in both homo- and heteropolysaccharide production by 'Acetobacteraceae'
A systematic review: facial, dental and orthodontic findings and orofacial diagnostics in patients with FASD
Background: The fetal alcohol spectrum disorder is a group of developmental disorders caused by maternal alcohol consumption. Patients with fetal alcohol syndrome show abnormal orofacial features. This review presents an overview over the facial, oral, dental or orthodontic findings and diagnostic tools concerning these features. Methods: For this systematic review Cochrane, Medline and Embase databases were considered and the review was performed according to the PRISMA checklist. Two independent reviewers evaluated all studies and recorded results in a summary of findings table. Risk of bias was analyzed via Quadas-2 checklist. Results: 61 studies were eligible for inclusion. All included studies were clinical studies. Methods and results of the studies were not comparable, guidelines or methods for the detection of FASD varied across studies. Facial features most often measured or found as distinguishing parameter were: palpebral fissure length, interpupillary or innercanthal distance, philtrum, upper lip, midfacial hypoplasia or head circumference. Conclusions: This review shows that to date a multitude of heterogeneous guidelines exists for the diagnosis of FASD. Uniform, objective diagnostic criteria and parameters for the orofacial region in FASD diagnosis are needed. A bio database with values and parameters for different ethnicities and age groups should be made available for diagnosis
