Is the Remuneration in Football Gender-equitable?
There are large differences in the remuneration of female and male professional football players. While the sports media regularly report high earnings for male football players, the remuneration of female football players is quite seldom an issue. Only a few female professional football players even at the highest rank can live from the remuneration for their athletic performance and many depend on additional income and sponsors. However, there are also large performance differences between the sexes in physical terms and in tournaments. In the USA “equal play, equal pay” is claimed for the sportily and financially more successful female national team that nevertheless earns significantly less than the men’s team. Yet gender discrimination cannot be determined in all countries if the performance is taken into account

Im Fokus stehen zwei Ansätze: „Subtitles as a Support“ (Untertitel als rezeptive Unterstützung) und „Subtitling as a Task“ (aktive Untertitelerstellung). This dissertation explores the potential of film subtitles in foreign language teaching from an applied linguistic and didactic perspective, with Dutch as the target language in the context of German secondary education. It focuses on two approaches: “Subtitles as a Support” (the activation of subtitles as receptive support) and “Subtitling as a Task” (active subtitle creation by learners). Three sub-studies, primarily quantitative in nature, were conducted. These sub-studies, which involved over 90 teachers and 300 learners, were based on questionnaires and tests. The sub-studies analyzed teachers' attitudes and teaching practices regarding both subtitle approaches (Sub-study 1), the effectiveness of adding intra-/interlingual, dual, and English subtitles for content comprehension and vocabulary acquisition (Sub-study 2), and the learning gains from active subtitling (Sub-study 3). The findings indicate that simultaneous presentation of the target and source language (dual subtitles) is particularly effective, and that active subtitling enables significant learning gains. This dissertation provides evidence-based recommendations for the use of audiovisual media in Dutch lessons in German schools
Bioinspired crowding directs supramolecular polymerisation
Crowding effects are crucial to maintaining functionality in biological systems, but little is known about their role in analogous artificial counterparts. Within the growing field of supramolecular polymer science, crowding effects have hitherto remained underappreciated. Herein, we show that crowding effects exhibit strong and distinct control over the kinetics, accessible pathways and final outcomes of supramolecular polymerisation processes. In the presence of a pre-formed supramolecular polymer as crowding agent, a model supramolecular polymer dramatically changes its self-assembly behaviour and undergoes a morphological transformation from bundled fibres into flower-like hierarchical assemblies, despite no co-assembly taking place. Notably, this new pathway can only be accessed in crowded environments and when the crowding agent exhibits a one-dimensional morphology. These results allow accessing diverse morphologies and properties in supramolecular polymers and pave the way towards a better understanding of high-precision self-assembly in nature
Blood-saving dissection with monopolar tungsten needle electrodes and Teflon-coated spatula electrodes in tumor orthopedics
Introduction: Resection of musculoskeletal tumors and reconstruction with tumor endoprostheses often results in blood loss requiring transfusion of blood products. We assessed the blood-saving potential of using monopolar tungsten needle electrodes and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)-coated spatula electrodes (intervention) compared with conventional dissection with sharp instruments and coagulation with uncoated steel electrodes (control). Methods: We retrospectively analyzed data of 132 patients (79 interventions, 53 controls) undergoing surgery by one single experienced surgeon in our tertiary referral center between 2012 and 2021. Results: Intraoperative blood loss in the intervention group was reduced by 29% [median (IQR): 700 (400–1200) vs 500 (200–700) ml; p = 0.0043]. Postoperative wound drainage decreased by 41% [median (IQR): 1230 (668–2041) vs 730 (450–1354) ml; p = 0.0080]. Additionally, patients in need of PRBCs during surgery declined from 43% to 15% (23/53 vs 12/79; p = 0.0005), while the transfusion rate after surgery did not change notably. The number of patients in need of revision surgery due to wound healing disorders was low in both groups (control group: 4/53 vs intervention group: 4/79). Only one patient in the control group and two patients in the intervention group underwent revision surgery due to hemorrhage. Baseline characteristics were similar between groups (sex, Charlson Comorbidity score, tumor entity).
Conclusion: Dissection with tungsten needle electrodes and PTFE-coated spatula electrodes appears an effective surgical blood-saving measure without increased risk of wound healing disorders
Cannabis use and the risk of primary open‑angle glaucoma: a Mendelian randomization study
Several observational studies have investigated the association between cannabis use and intraocular pressure, but its association with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) remains unclear. In this study, we leveraged human genetic data to assess through Mendelian randomization (MR) whether cannabis use affects POAG. We used five single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with lifetime cannabis use (P-value < 5 × 10–8) from a genome-wide association study (GWAS) (N = 184,765) by the International Cannabis Consortium, 23andMe, and UK Biobank and eleven SNPs associated with cannabis use disorder (P-value < 5 × 10–7) from a GWAS meta-analysis of (17,068 cases and 357,219 controls of European descent) from Psychiatric Genomics Consortium Substance Use Disorders working group, Lundbeck Foundation Initiative for Integrative Psychiatric Research, and deCode. We associated the selected five SNPs from the GWAS of lifetime cannabis use and the eleven SNPs from the GWAS of cannabis use disorder, with the largest to date GWAS meta-analysis of POAG (16,677 cases and 199,580 controls). MR analysis suggested no evidence for a causal association of lifetime cannabis use and cannabis use disorder with POAG (odds ratio (OR) of outcome per doubling of the odds of exposure (95% confidence interval): 1.04 (0.88; 1.23) for lifetime cannabis use and 0.97 (0.92; 1.03) for cannabis use disorder). Sensitivity analyses to address pleiotropy and weak instrument bias yielded similar estimates to the primary analysis. In conclusion, our results do not support a causal association between cannabis use and POAG
Coupled dissolution-precipitation and growth processes on calcite, aragonite, and Carrara marble exposed to cadmium-rich aqueous solutions
Calcium carbonate and cadmium-rich fluid interactions have been studied at the nano and microscale with fluid flow and static fluid conditions for three forms of CaCO3: calcite in single crystals of Iceland Spar, calcite in a polycrystalline Carrara marble, and aragonite single crystals. Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) showed the nanoscale effect of cadmium on CaCO3 dissolution and growth underflow-through conditions at ambient temperature, with the modification of calcite dissolution behaviour and simultaneous precipitation of a Cd-rich phase on all the different samples. Hydrothermal experiments at 200°C revealed that the reactivity of single calcite crystals is passivated by epitaxial growth of the less soluble Cd-rich endmember of the (Ca,Cd)CO3 solid-solution on the sample surface due to the similar crystallographic structures of calcite and otavite (CdCO3). Conversely, the presence of grain boundaries in Carrara marble or the change of crystallographic structure and reaction-induced fracturing in aragonite allowed, to some extent, the pseudomorphic replacement of Carrara marble and aragonite samples by a porous (Ca,Cd)CO3 solid-solution phase of variable composition. These phenomena have been observed in solutions undersaturated with respect to all solid phases and are the result of an interface-coupled dissolution-precipitation mechanism where the dissolving CaCO3 provides ions to supersaturate the mineral-fluid interfacial layer, leading to the precipitation of a Cd-containing phase on the samples’ surfaces. This coupled dissolution-precipitation mechanism could potentially be used as a remediation process to sequester cadmium from contaminated effluents.
Effect of risk status for severe COVID-19 on individual contact behaviour during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in 2020/2021—an analysis based on the German COVIMOD study
Background: One of the primary aims of contact restriction measures during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has been to protect people at increased risk of severe disease from the virus. Knowledge about the uptake of contact restriction measures in this group is critical for public health decision-making. We analysed data from the German contact survey COVIMOD to assess differences in contact patterns based on risk status, and compared this to pre-pandemic data to establish whether there was a differential response to contact reduction measures. Methods: We quantified differences in contact patterns according to risk status by fitting a generalised linear model accounting for within-participant clustering to contact data from 31 COVIMOD survey waves (April 2020-December 2021), and estimated the population-averaged ratio of mean contacts of persons with high risk for a severe COVID-19 outcome due to age or underlying health conditions, to those without. We then compared the results to pre-pandemic data from the contact surveys HaBIDS and POLYMOD. Results: Averaged across all analysed waves, COVIMOD participants reported a mean of 3.21 (95% confidence interval (95%CI) 3.14,3.28) daily contacts (truncated at 100), compared to 18.10 (95%CI 17.12,19.06) in POLYMOD and 28.27 (95%CI 26.49,30.15) in HaBIDS. After adjusting for confounders, COVIMOD participants aged 65 or above had 0.83 times (95%CI 0.79,0.87) the number of contacts as younger age groups. In POLYMOD, this ratio was 0.36 (95%CI 0.30,0.43). There was no clear difference in contact patterns due to increased risk from underlying health conditions in either HaBIDS or COVIMOD. We also found that persons in COVIMOD at high risk due to old age increased their non-household contacts less than those not at such risk after strict restriction measures were lifted. Conclusions: Over the course of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, there was a general reduction in contact numbers in the German population and also a differential response to contact restriction measures based on risk status for severe COVID-19. This differential response needs to be taken into account for parametrisations of mathematical models in a pandemic setting
Propionate metabolism in Desulfurella acetivorans
Desulfurella acetivorans is a strictly anaerobic sulfur-reducing deltaproteobacterium that can grow heterotrophically by oxidation of acetate or autotrophically with molecular hydrogen. Here we show that D. acetivorans possesses a putative operon encoding enzymes of the methylcitrate cycle of propionate oxidation and demonstrate that this bacterium is capable of propionate growth. However, activities of the methylcitrate cycle enzymes could not be detected in extracts of propionate-grown cells, and experiments with [U-13C3]propionate and comparative proteomic analysis of acetate- and propionate-grown cells suggested that the methylcitrate cycle is not active during propionate growth. Instead, propionyl-CoA assimilation proceeds via its carboxylation to methylmalonyl-CoA, which is further converted to succinyl-CoA. The latter is directed to the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, where it is converted to oxaloacetate and condenses with acetyl-CoA (produced by decarboxylation of another oxaloacetate molecule) to form citrate, which is oxidized in the TCA cycle. These results highlight the uncertainty of genomic predictions in the analysis of microbial metabolic pathways and the need for their experimental confirmation
