Venäjän ja Ukrainan välisen sodan tapahtumien vaikutus suomalaisten teknologiateollisuuden yritysten osakekehitykseen
This study examines the influence of the Russia-Ukraine war events on the stock performance of Finnish technology industry companies. The aim is to increase understanding of the effects of the war, regarding the beginning of the war specifically for Finland but also beyond the first attack. This is pursued by studying multiple war related events, both military and non-military. Each event is studied separately by applying the market model of the event study methodology. The results are then compared to determine whether the event type impacts the market reaction. Since the war has continued to unfold, the stocks’ long-term performance is also analysed through cumulative returns.
The results show the Russia-Ukraine war events have impacted the abnormal stock performance of the Finnish technology industry companies and other events than just the initial invasion have also caused market reactions. Furthermore, unlike generally in Europe, the outbreak of the war influenced investors of the Finnish industry immediately. The specific importance of the technology industry to the Finnish economy may explain the difference in investors’ interpretation compared to Europe in general. Based on the results, both event types can influence the stock market positively and negatively, and there is no statistically significant difference in the impact on investors’ decision-making between military events and non-military events. The long-term performance analysis suggests the challenges provided by the sanctions restricting trade with Russia have been long-lasting. The high-frequency nature of the war events influenced the reliability of the results and due to the specific objective of the study the results are not generalizable to other markets. Regardless, the results are indicative that the war has influenced the state of political risk in Finland and the uncertainty has been reflected in the development of the stock market.Tämä tutkielma tutkii Venäjän ja Ukrainan välisen sodan tapahtumien vaikutusta suomalaisten teknologiateollisuuden yritysten osakekehitykseen.

Software maintenance is usually the longest phase of the software lifecycle, and as time passes, the requirements for the software might change. To modify the software to conform to new requirements, refactoring is required. If the software to be refactored has poor maintainability, refactoring might become very time-consuming, and eventually modifying the software might even become impossible.
Design science is a research methodology focused on creating artifacts designed to solve identified problems, and it can be used to create solutions for many kinds of issues in software projects. There have been studies on design science and software design in general, but not many specifically focusing on maintenance issues.
This paper examines the design of a long-standing open-source software project from the perspective of software maintenance, identifies maintenance related problems with it, and uses a design science methodology to modify the design so that should increase the ease of maintenance of the project.
An alternative software design for a part of an open-source project is presented as the artifact of the design science method used in the paper.Ylläpito on yleensä pisin vaihee ohjelmiston elinkaaressa, ja ajan myötä ohjelmistolle asetetut vaatimukset voivat muuttua. Jotta ohjelmisto saadaan vastaamaan uusia vaatimuksia, joudutaan ohjelmistoa muuttamaan.
Battery system architecture and dimensioning for urban track system
With the acceleration of urbanization, urban traffic congestion and environmental pollution problems have become increasingly prominent. This paper proposes a dual-battery system architecture suitable for urban rail transit, which consists of a drive battery and an auxiliary battery. The auxiliary battery provides a stable 24V voltage for the traction control system and other auxiliary equipment. Through Simulink modeling and simulation, the system achieves a stable 24V output at a 60-100V input. The battery life is extended by controlling the battery power and the battery utilization is improved through regenerative braking technology
The effects of soil resistivity on the grounding resistance of electrified railways
This Master's thesis explores the challenges posed by soil resistivity to the functionality of the grounding systems in electrified railways. The study investigates the relationship between soil resistivity and the grounding resistance of railway systems and presents solutions for improving grounding performance. The work is based on a literature review and two case studies.
The thesis analyzes how varying soil conditions affect the effectiveness of implemented grounding solutions and what methods can be used to reduce grounding resistance in challenging resistivity conditions. Based on the analysis of soil and grounding resistance, the thesis provides design phase recommendations for how soil resistivity can be considered during planning. In addition, the use of materials that improve soil conductivity is presented as a means to enhance grounding performance.
The key conclusion of the research is that considering soil resistivity during the planning and construction phases is essential for ensuring the safety and reliability of electrified railway systems. The thesis offers practical solutions for the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency and can be applied both in the planning of new railway sections and in improving the grounding of existing infrastructure
Optimisation of electrical machines based on finite element analysis
This thesis explores the application of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) in the optimisation of electrical machines, with a focus on improving performance metrics such as efficiency, torque density. A parametric 2D transient model of a 4.5 kW, 4-pole surface mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor is built in ANSYS Maxwell, where key geometric and material variables (air gap, slot opening, magnet thickness, etc.) are adjust to maximise efficiency and torque density while minimising ripple and losses. Demonstrates that finite element analysis is an effective tool for analysing the electromagnetic performance of electrical machines, enabling optimisation of their performance at the design stage
Introduction of lean philosophy and continuous improvement processes in the supervisory duty of a rescue service
Tämä diplomityö tehtiin Päijät-Hämeen pelastuslaitoksen toimeksiannosta. Tutkimuksen taustalla oli pelastuslaitoksen tarve kehittää valvontatyötä vastaamaan paremmin käytettävissä olevia resursseja, tehostaa toimintaa sekä kehittää työhön liittyvien poikkeamien hallintaa ja havaitsemista. Diplomityön tavoitteena oli löytää tapoja, joilla lean-ajattelua ja jatkuvan parantamisen prosesseja voidaan ottaa käyttöön pelastuslaitoksen valvontatyössä.
Työ toteutettiin organisaatiossa toimintatutkimuksena. Tutkimuksessa tunnistettiin valvontaprosessiin liittyvän hukan aiheuttajia tutkimalla prosessin arvovirtaa. Lisäksi tutkimuksessa sovellettiin lean-menetelmiä ja työkaluja valvontatyön tehokkuuden ja laadun parantamiseksi sekä laadittiin kuvaus niistä toimenpiteistä, joita lean-ajattelun ja jatkuvan parantamisen prosessien käyttöönotto pelastuslaitoksen onnettomuuksien ehkäisyn osastolla edellyttää.
Testatut lean-menetelmät havaittiin pääasiassa toimiviksi ja niiden katsottiin tuovan ainakin potentiaalisia hyötyjä valvontatyöhön. Prosessien käyttöönotto ja jatkuvan parantamisen saavuttaminen edellyttäisivät ennen kaikkea henkilöstön kouluttamista, kehittämiseen sitoutumista sekä resurssien varaamista parannustyötä varten. This master’s thesis was commissioned by the Päijät-Häme Rescue Department. The background of the study was the need of the rescue service to develop its supervisory duty to better match the available resources, to improve the efficiency of its operations and to develop the management and detection of work-related deviations. The aim of the thesis was to find ways to implement lean thinking and continuous improvement processes in the supervisory duty of the rescue service.
The work was carried out in the organisation as an action research project. The study identified the causes of waste in the supervisory process by examining the value stream of the process. The study also applied lean methods and tools to improve the efficiency and quality of supervision and described the measures required to implement lean thinking and continuous improvement processes in the accident prevention department of a rescue organisation.
The lean methods tested were found to be mainly effective and were considered to bring at least potential benefits to the supervisory duty. The introduction of the processes and the achievement of continuous improvement would require, above all, training of staff, commitment to development and the allocation of resources for improvement work
Heat sealing and convertibility of coated paper materials in vertical form fill and seal machine
Challenges regarding the heat sealing and convertibility of coated papers in vertical form, fill, and seal (VFFS) machines were investigated. This research focused on enhancing the use of coated papers in VFFS packaging machines by identifying the optimal sealing parameters to ensure package tightness, evaluating friction-related issues to improve runnability, and developing a novel forming shoulder design to optimise material formability and minimise oil and grease properties damage during the conversion process.
To understand the performance of various coated papers in VFFS machine, PE-coated and dispersion-coated papers were tested and compared with conventional thermoplastic films. The seal properties and integrity were examined using seal strength and leak tightness measurements. Additionally, the frictional properties of the coated papers were investigated on different surfaces to identify the appropriate surface for paper runnability. The seal structure and surface characteristics of the converted packages were analysed using SEM and 3D profilometry. Finally, oil and grease measurements were performed to evaluate the impact of wrinkles on converted pouches.
The results indicated that achieving an airtight seal with coated papers requires precise control of the sealing process parameters, with serrated seal bars significantly improving the seal integrity by creating localised shear stress that enhances polymer chain entanglement. Frictional analysis revealed that the coefficient of friction was a critical factor affecting the runnability of the material in VFFS machines. The Teflon-coated forming tube and pattern-rolled 5WL stainless-steel surfaces effectively reduced friction and improved material flow over the novel forming shoulder. The new shoulder design features an optimised bending curve and other geometrical parameters that successfully minimise wrinkles and tears on the coated paper packages after the conversion process.
Through precise control of sealing parameters and advancements in tooling design, this study offers the ability to use sustainable materials in VFFS packaging. The proposed modifications to VFFS processes enhance the practicality of adopting environmentally friendly packaging solutions in the food industry and other fields.ei tietoa saavutettavuudest
