Get PDFThis presentation will detail the process of creating an assistive technology for a child (age 6-12) who experiences seizures. This model is not intended to be given to children with seizures, but rather will be given to the Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing to teach students about accommodations. Our team communicated with our sponsor, brainstormed, created 3D models, and finally created a prototype of our model. We decided on a combination of a medicine compartment and a head rest that is easily transportable for a child. This model will help nursing students better understand and assist children who experience seizures

No full textBinding affinity and binding specificity are two separate dimensions of molecular recognition. The former describes the affinity for the cognate ligand, while the latter describes the relative affinity of cognate to noncognate ligands. The experimental determination of affinity is straightforward, but it is much more difficult to measure specificity since it requires the characterization of “off-target” binding to any of a large number of potential noncognate ligands. The goal of my research project is to use a new approach, immunoprecipitation-liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (IP-LC/MS), to characterize the specificity of antibodies for their respective antigen as a function of their affinity maturation

No full textThe Anti-Vax movement is a social movement that opposes vaccine usage for various reasons. In this presentation, I’ll be exploring some of the history of this movement dating back to the 18th century and examining its evolution over the years. The anti-vax movement is deeply rooted in socio-political issues across America and is an important example of the active dangers of misinformation and disinformation. I’ll explore major players contributing to the mis/disinformation of vaccines, those who seek to profit from this rapidly growing movement, and how this mis/disinformation is spread. This presentation seeks to shed light on the anti-vax movement’s historical and cultural context which has allowed it to grow so big and the dangers it poses for the future of healthcare in America

We wanted to look at the affects of diet, sex, and genes to determine if they play a significant role in Type II diabetes. We performed a glucose tolerance test injected the F34 LG,SM advanced intercross line. We found that determined that these factors play a role in having Type II diabetes

The Problem With Maternal Health Disparities
No full textA growing problem in health care is the severity of maternal health disparities, which include maternal and infant mortality rates being disproportionately high in minority communities. In order to address these disparities, it\u27s important to ask why should maternal health disparities be minimized? In this presentation, I will provide background on maternal health disparities, and how they impact communities, especially minority communities. I will then argue that maternal health disparities should be minimized because they are rooted in structural racism and adverse socio-economic factors, such as income and access to health care inequalities. Structural racism is bad because it fosters mistreatment based on race within the various structures of society, which can ultimately lead to health issues. Furthermore, I plan to discuss how their minimization would positively impact the greater community
Characterizing the BglB L108E Mutation on BglB Protein to Determine Its Effects on Catalytic Efficiency
Get PDFThe overall goal of D2D is to create a dataset that will be used to train artificial intelligence algorithms to model a protein and its function based on its amino acid sequence and/or protein structure (Kleffner et al, 2017.) Having accurate structure/function prediction algorithms is important because it demonstrates specific mutations that affect a protein and aids in theorizing how the location of that mutation will affect its overall function. BglB is a key enzyme component present in cellulase, which completes the final step during cellulose hydrolysis to form glucose, which is used as a source of energy in many organisms (Wright et al, 1992). In this experiment, BglB was mutated at nucleotide 108 from leucine to glutamate in order to observe its effect on catalytic efficiency If BglB is mutated at L108E position, then it will exhibit the same catalytic efficiency in comparison to the wild type because its overall Foldit score suggests high likelihood of expression, and intermolecular modeling analysis also points to normal local interactions. Even though the amino acid would change from being hydrophobic to hydrophilic, it occurs far from the catalytic site, theoretically producing no change to the enzyme’s overall activity (Carlin et al, 2017)
