Anxiety and Depressive Symptoms Prior to Menarche: The Role of Sleep and Physical Activity
Get PDFAlthough research has shown that female adolescents experience increased anxiety and depression symptoms following menarche, there is limited evidence in the months leading up to menarche and even less attention paid to behavioral effects on this transition. This study examines pubertal status, anxiety symptoms, depressive symptoms, physical activity, and sleep health in 120 premenarchal, biological females. This study addresses: (1) the association between pubertal status, anxiety and depressive symptoms among female adolescents in the months leading up to menarche, and (2) considers the role of modifiable actions such as sleep health and physical activity on these symptoms
Cook County Community Survey: Gender and Restorative Justice
Get PDFThis presentation explores the connections between gender and public opinion on restorative justice practices. In particular, it looks at how opinions about restorative justice practices may vary based on the gender of the respondent and the gender of the perpetrator. During the Fall 2023 semester, I worked with my advisor to craft questions on these issues for the CCCS, which was fielded this January. Through this experience, I was able to deepen my knowledge of a variety of factors that may influence broader opinions about criminal justice issues
Organic Acid Production in Bacterial Suspensions Containing NaF and MFP
Get PDFMFP is a self-sufficient anticaries agent, whereas NaF effectiveness differs based on presence of toothpaste binding agents. The bacterial strain used is S. mutans. Cells will be suspended in an artificial saliva phosphate buffer (separated into triplicate beakers: control, NaF, MFP). A 2-hour pH drop, will establish treatment inhibiting acid production more effectively in a hypothetical mouth environment.
1) Is MFP more effective at inhibiting lactic acid production?

Investigating the Ethical Concerns of Brain-Machine Interface for Human Enhancement

BMI is a neuroprosthetic used to augment the patient’s own nervous system. For example, BMI allows patients with movement disorders to train an intelligent controller like a robotic hand. This research investigates the ethical concerns surrounding the use of BMI for human enhancement. I intend to explore issues such as privacy and fairness in the implementation of BMI technology. Understanding and addressing the ethical concerns of BMI is crucial for ensuring that this technology is developed and used responsibly
The Consequences of Blame: Media Coverage, Environmental Degradation, and Public Support for Environmentalism in the Global South
No full textAlthough colonialism and industrialization from the Global North significantly contributed to environmental degradation, contemporary media coverage increasingly shifts blame for environmental disasters onto the Global South. How does media coverage in the Global North assign blame for environmental degradation in the Global South, and how has this changed over time? What effect do these rhetorical tactics have on public support for environmentalism? We argue that rhetorical tactics employed by the media of Global North states have slowly but surely impacted the perceived blame held by the public and that this blame tempers support for environmentalism. In order to analyze the effect of media coverage, we will conduct a content analysis of different news mediums. We will also conduct a survey experiment to capture the effect this coverage has on public opinion. We expect to find that the public’s perception of blame when examining environmental issues in the Global South is skewed by the misattribution of blame and a lack of historical context provided in modern media coverage. These findings highlight the added political weight placed on the Global South, whose environmental degradation began against their will
