    This presentation will explore the overall trends in Hinduism from the Early Vedic Age to the modern day. Expert interviews, peer-reviewed scientific articles, and primary resources were used to gather data and make connections. The focus of this presentation is the changes in the Hindu population’s growth, immigration patterns, and practices. This experience has led to a deeper understanding of Hinduism overall, its evolution, and what the future may hold

One of the leading causes of conspiracy theories found is believed to be anxiety and/or paranoia, but does social influence have a bigger effect on them or is it mostly internal? I will be sharing findings on what possible causes are behind conspiracy theories and how do conspiracy theorists so confidently use science denial. How do these theories get so crazy and why does it tear so many people apart

    Assessing the Molecular Conservation of the Gene Mipp2 Across Drosophila Species

    The primary objective of this project is to assess the molecular and structural conservation of Mipp2 within the insulin signaling pathway, across various Drosophila species. We mapped the location of Mipp2 in D. arizonae and annotated its coding sequences. The annotation displayed poor conservation of Mipp2 between D. melanogaster and D. arizonae, showing divergence in all coding exons. We have since annotated Mipp2 across additional Drosophila species and have found that more closely related species exhibit higher conservation of the gene region and the protein coding sequence

    How Language at Post-Intervention Predicts Psychological Outcomes: An Exploratory Analysis of Language Trends Using LIWC-22

    Mobile technology-delivered interventions (mTDIs) are effective for improving psychological symptoms in adolescents and young adults. However, little is known about what factors predict these benefits from mTDIs. Using data from an RCT that demonstrated the benefits of the app Headspace, the present study examines the extent to which participants’ language during an exit interview, analyzed using Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count, predicts quantitative wellbeing outcomes. Expected results are that linguistic variables will predict the extent to which a student experiences prolonged benefits from the intervention. These results would bring greater insight into how linguistic factors predict psychological outcomes in mTDIs

    Nuclear Weapons in Conquest: Critical Analysis of Nuclear Deterrence Theory

    Contrary to the logic of nuclear deterrence theory, which posits that states need nuclear weapons to prevent conquest, this research seeks to demonstrate that this issue is more complex than a division between those who possess nuclear weapons and those who do not. It aims to challenge traditional understandings of nuclear state military capabilities, contending that nuclear weapons are not the prevailing factor when deterring conquest. This paper conducts two case study analyses of previously explored cases in existing theoretical frameworks. The case study approach introduces a novel collection of historical contextual information previously undervalued by other theoretical frameworks. We observe a phenomenon where nuclear weapons, as well as weapons of mass destruction in general, do not dictate decisions regarding conquest in the state system. The mystery of what exactly can prevent conquest remains, but the answer does not lie in nuclear weapons. We hypothesize that other factors like technological development, domestic politics, and international relationships are greater predictors of successful prevention of conquest than the acquisition of nuclear weapons

    Are Large Language Models Conscious?

    This work evaluates the possibility of a conscious large language model (LLM) under the parameters of Integrated Information Theory (IIT). First, we examine the methodology behind IIT as a scientific theory of consciousness. Second, we detail the system requirements for consciousness under IIT. Third, we examine the basic architecture of modern LLMs. Finally, we subject the network architecture of current LLMs to the system requirements of IIT, evaluating each “physical postulate” IIT espouses individually. We conclude that LLMs meet none of IIT’s requirements for a physical system to be conscious, and briefly discuss the implications for future research

    TAK1 Blockade Plus Azacitidine Induces Apoptosis, Augments Cytarabine, and Ablates Clonogenicity in MLL-AF9+ Human AML Cell Lines

    Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) encompasses a diverse group of cancers that originate in the blood-forming tissues of the bone marrow [1]. Aside from the PML-RARA+ subtype, AML carries a 5-year survival rate of 28% for patients 20+ years of age. AML is the most common cancer of the hematopoietic system and is slightly more common in biological males; the average age at diagnosis is 68 years. Standard frontline treatment for AML is a two-phase regimen of intensive chemotherapy (CTx) employing daunorubicin and cytarabine; etoposide may also be added in select regimens. Despite 60-70% of patients achieving complete remission (CR), at least half of CR-achieving patients experience relapse within 3 years from their diagnosis. Additionally, 30-40% of patients present with refractory AML, experiencing little to no benefit from frontline treatment. Nearly all CTx, including daunorubicin and cytarabine, rely on p53-mediated apoptosis to kill AML cells. However, especially in relapsed/refractory (R/R) cases, AML cells frequently harbor TP53 mutations and actively repress apoptotic machinery to resist chemotherapy [2]. However, other programmed cell death (PCD) pathways, such as pyroptosis and necroptosis, may remain intact. We speculate that apoptosis-resistant, R/R AML cells can be killed via induction of other PCD pathways included in a collective concept, PANoptosis [3]. AML cells arise from mutated hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPCs) and express innate immunity-associated machinery, including Toll-like receptors (TLRs); PANoptosis—the parallel activation of pyroptosis, apoptosis, and necroptosis—is triggered by innate immune signaling, which induces assembly of the PANoptosome. RIPK1, the master regulator of PANoptosis, is required for PANoptosome assembly. RIPK1 is stimulated by an array of upstream effectors including TLRs, which are upregulated in certain subsets of AML such as the notoriously hard-to-treat cases harboring the MLL-AF9 translocation [4]. Within the PANoptosome, NLRP3-ASC-Caspase 1 mediates pyroptosis, FADD-Caspase 8 mediates apoptosis, and RIPK1-RIPK3 mediates necroptosis. Two key transducers of innate immune signaling, the TAK1 and TBK1 Ser/Thr kinases, restrict PANoptosis by phosphorylating RIPK1, inhibiting PANoptosome assembly. Previous research from our lab shows that TAK1 and TBK1 are each differentially required by two distinct subtypes of AML stem cells [5,6]. Thus, we hypothesize that pharmacologic blockade of TAK1 and/or TBK1 (with HS-276 and GSK8612, respectively) could sensitize AML cells to PANoptotic stimulation—and do so selectively, as PANoptotic machinery is active in AML cells but not healthy HSPCs (Figure 1) [4]. Additionally, azacitidine (Vidaza®, Onureg®), a pyrimidine antimetabolite that promotes DNA hypomethylation by inhibiting DNMT1, could augment TAK1/TBK1 blockade as AZA may activate endosomal TLRs by causing an accumulation of cytosolic dsDNA/dsRNA [7]

    Feeling a little uneasy: A comparative discourse analysis of White and BIPOC college students’ reflective writing about systemic racism

    This critical discourse analysis compares the ways in which White and BIPOC college students discuss their experiences of an educational intervention meant to promote better understanding of systemic racism. We analyzed reflective writing produced by 11 White psychology students from a private liberal arts college in the eastern United States and 17 BIPOC students from a Human Services program at a public university in the western United States. White students engaged in whiteness discourse that distanced themselves from the realities of systemic racism and/or relieved the cognitive dissonance associated with the self- and group-image threat related to learning about systemic racism. In so doing, they unwittingly upheld white supremacy. BIPOC students, in contrast, engaged an antiracist discourse that employed critiques of the social systems that produce systemic racism and destabilized dominant colorblind narratives, often by drawing on lived experience. From the Critical Race Theory perspective that the centrality of lived experience is a legitimate lens through which to analyze racial subordination, we discuss the importance of attending to the action orientation and constructed nature of discourse in antiracist education
