Science Communication and Religious Tensions in Healthcare
This research aims to explain the Christian healthcare professionals\u27 experience of dealing with tension caused by their religious beliefs with scientific knowledge. This emphasizes the importance of science communication in dealing with such challenges. Studies show that among healthcare professionals, religiosity influences clinical decision-making and interaction with patients affecting how they respond to the moral and ethical dilemmas they encounter within practice (Dillard et al., 2023). Stahl (2021) claims that healthcare providers confront hurdles in managing religious plurality and lack the training to deal with a patient\u27s religion without compromising scientific integrity. Harrison et al. further assess the effect of a leader\u27s openness to scientific perspectives on his or her healthcare guidelines and recommendations, focusing on how the two can be integrated within dialogue into education for healthcare professionals. These findings exhibit the complex relationship between faith and science that manifests in unique challenges for professionals, particularly those concerning evidence-based decisions that respect the spiritual values of patients. Bridging the divide between the sacred and the scientific will strengthen cultural competence, promote moral conflict resolution, and improve healthcare delivery for diverse populations. Such approaches advance the larger objectives of bringing cultural competence and religious sensitivity into healthcare

The Role of Social Media in Climate Change Information
This presentation explores the role of social media in spreading misinformation and disinformation about climate change and the consequences that can result from it at the individual and societal levels. it explains how cognitive, social, and algorithmic biases can create an environment where false information and narratives can spread across social media platforms fast. while a lot of the misinformation can be attributed to people misinterpreting the information and therefore misinforming their social circles, a lot more is attributed to parties who benefit from climate change such as fossil fuel companies funding false narratives to deter any significant change on the issue. The presentation concludes by stating that we should look into more critical thinking skills and greater overcite to fight against climate misinformation
The Impact of Race and Gender on Benevolent Sexism Endorsement
Research investigating the influence of race and gender conjointly on sexism endorsement is limited. Much of this existing research exclusively focuses on difference between Black and White women and men or have focused on race and gender as separate entities. The goal of this study is to investigate gender and race difference in benevolent sexism (BS) endorsement while considering relevant cultural factors for each race-gender group. A mixed-method design examined differences in endorsement of BS for Asian, Black, Latina/o, and White women and men. A meditational model using each race-gender group as independent variables examined difference in BS as mediated by egalitarianism, racial identity, religiosity, and familism. BS endorsement was compared to each race-gender group by the reference group, White women. Additionally, participants were asked to respond to qualitative questions about their definitions, examples, and factors that contribute to their ideas of sexism. Qualitative responses helped inform the results using explicit questions asking about beliefs about sexism in conjunction with the implicit responses to sexism captured in the questionnaires. Overall, the results highlight that BS endorsement differs among race-gender groups that does not uniformly follow racial or gender patterns. For instance, Black women tended to respond in similar manners to Asian, Black, Latino, and White men. Furthermore, the qualitative results indicate that what participants believe influence their beliefs about sexism differs from indirect responses on questionnaires. Further research is needed to better understand what factors contribute to difference in BS between race and gender groups
M/other Your Politics, a Praxis for the Next Iterations of Humanity
In this dissertation, political, educational and feminist theories are intertwined to present m/othering as an educative practice and a revolutionary politics of love. Perspectives grounded in m/othering theories, practices and activism offer transformative visions of the future and connect the power inherent in our daily lives to the larger project of overcoming systems of domination. An invitation to pursue informal, liberatory educational practices in the mundane moments of everyday life, M/other Your Politics reframes power and repositions politics at the site of the interpersonal, offering a hopeful vision for the implementation of love as resistance. Set upon altering consciousness and therefore reality, m/othering is positioned as a framework within which embodying love becomes a relational way of being, a praxis, an everyday methodology for life and a politics. Highlighting the role of m/othering in the conscious development of generative power, critical consciousness and a revised socialization process focused on producing loving subjectivities, m/othering is posited as a possible political foundation for our futures, harnessing the commonly hidden, subjectivizing power of our relational encounters for the purpose of co-creating worlds in which it will be easier to love. An homage to the work of Paulo Freire, bell hooks and Alexis Pauline Gumbs, this dissertation presents the love we learn from m/others as a powerful, transformative force as humans intentionally shape change and co-create humanity’s next iterations
Patterns of Resilience, Patterns of Tragedy: Perspectives from Inside and Outside to Theorize Beneficial Interventions Serving Urban African American Youth Struggling with Community Violence
Community violence, defined as violence perpetrated in community as opposed to home settings, is a salient social problem, causing terror and tragedy, especially in urban, low-income communities of color. Interventions supporting youth struggling with community violence have been insufficiently studied and theorized, especially from strengths-focused, culturally relevant standpoints in the context of contemporary social policies. This paper outlines psychodynamic theoretical models for services that have been developed via participatory research and provided for 19 years for over 1000 youth. Then, to understand how youth make use of the programs from an “inside” perspective, four intensive case examples are described. From an “outside” perspective, the social policy and community contexts for the clinical interactions are interwoven into interpreting the case examples. The “inside” and “outside” perspectives yield patterns for understanding youth who survive community violence and youth who perish, and paths clinical social workers can take to prevent tragedies and develop youths’ resilience. Findings indicate the importance of high-dosage, multi-faceted, personalized trauma-focused services supporting youths’ strengths and agency as contributors to group programming and treatment planning, and interventions deepening youths’ communication and relationship skills. Patterns also highlight the need for more accessible mental health care, educational and social services and improved child protective services with safety options for youth beset by familial and extra-familial gang violence
Emotional Intelligence Training Correlates With Medical Students’ Apprehension of AI in Healthcare: A Single-Institution, Observational Study
Background: The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare is becoming increasingly widespread. While AI has been touted to improve many aspects of the field, its potential to undermine the doctor-patient relationship has also been recognized. It is not known what future physicians believe regarding the potential effects of AI on physicians\u27 professional relationships. It is also unknown whether formal training in emotional intelligence (EI) and resilience strategies influences medical students\u27 opinions on the use of AI in healthcare.
Objective: To ascertain medical students’ opinion on the potential impact of AI on various EI-related aspects of healthcare, such as its use in guiding doctor-patient interactions, and to determine whether formal training in emotional intelligence and resilience (EIR) is associated with their opinion on these topics.
Methods: Approximately 700 medical students were asked to voluntarily and anonymously complete a 12-item survey. All survey items were required to be answered for students\u27 responses to be accepted and analyzed. Agreement with survey items was measured via a Likert-type scale, with 1 = strongly disagree and 5 = strongly agree. Results were summarized as means and standard deviations, stratified by whether students did (EIR+) or did not (EIR-) take our institution\u27s EIR elective course. Median responses per survey item were compared across EIR+/- groups via the Mann-Whitney U test (α \u3c 0.05), a non-parametric test comparing two independent samples allowing for unequal group size.
Results: A total of 50 EIR+ students (59%) and 35 EIR- students (41%) replied, making the survey response rate approximately 12.14%. Compared to their counterparts, EIR+ students indicated statistically significantly greater disagreement with “I believe AI technology will improve the doctor-patient relationship” (3.0 (± 1.2) vs. 3.5 (± 1.0); p = 0.0327). While not statistically significant, EIR+ students also reported a similar magnitude (~0.5 points) of greater disagreement with “AI has a place in guiding physicians on how to better interact with their patients and colleagues” (2.9 (± 1.2) vs. 3.4 (± 1.1); p = 0.0701) and “Overall, I think adopting the use of AI in healthcare will be beneficial” (3.6 (± 1.2) vs. 4.0 (± 1.1); p = 0.0521).
Conclusions: The preliminary data from our single-institution, observational study suggest EIR-trained medical students may be more cautious of AI usage in healthcare due to the potential negative impact AI can have on the doctor-patient relationship. However, larger studies using validated surveys are required to confirm this conclusion
On Heat Engines Having Efficiencies That Degrade With Every Cycle That Are Nonetheless Reversible: The Wonders of Hilbert Curves in the Pressure-Volume Plane
Heat engines are cornerstones in classical thermodynamics, not to mention fixtures of everyday life. As everyone knows, real heat engines are rife with sources of irreversibility, and, in turn, have efficiencies that degrade over time. Here we chart a classical heat engine whose efficiency degrades with every cycle, but maintains perfect reversibility nonetheless. There are no paradoxes in play due to the inviolability of the thermodynamic laws. Rather the engine operates transparently according to Hilbert curves that fill the pressure-volume plane. The assembly of the curves is iterative and digital whereby no information is lost over every cycle

Statistical Approaches in Evolutionary Biology: Using Threespine Stickleback Fish to Test Fisher\u27s Geometric Model and Evaluate Methods for Handling Missing Data
This thesis explores two distinct yet complementary aspects of evolutionary biology. The first chapter tests predictions from Fisher\u27s geometric model of adaptation using a finely resolved fossil sequence of Gasterosteus doryssus spanning approximately 21,250 years. I analyze phenotypic changes in three armor traits during adaptation to a new environment and find that while step sizes follow the predicted exponential distribution—with many small steps and few large ones—they do not adhere to the model\u27s temporal prediction that large-effect mutations should fix early in the adaptive walk. This discrepancy likely reflects adaptation from standing genetic variation rather than de novo mutation. The second chapter evaluates methodological approaches to missing data in quantitative genetics, comparing Complete Case Analysis (CCA) and Multiple Imputation (MI) across simulated datasets derived from threespine stickleback fish (Gasterosteus aculeatus) populations. I develop a simulation framework that uses Random Skewers as a metric to quantify how effectively each method preserves the original variance-covariance structure under different missingness scenarios. Results demonstrate that MI consistently outperforms CCA as missingness increases, with particularly pronounced advantages at higher levels of missing data. These findings have significant implications for paleontological studies and other contexts where incomplete datasets are unavoidable. Together, these chapters advance our understanding of both theoretical models of adaptive evolution and methodological approaches to evolutionary data analysis
