Evaluating Regioselectivity of Dienophile Adsorption to Tetracene via Diels-Alder Reaction in the Vapor Phase

Diels-Alder synthetic reactions of organic compounds are fundamental to chemistry and have broad applications. Steep activation energy barriers control the regioselectivity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon acenes, forming predictable adducts. However, initial data from our group suggests that strict regioselectivity may be altered when Diels-Alder reactions are performed in solid phase due to molecular packing. Our research examines how reaction cavity-specific effects in solid phase impact formation of unprecedented adducts, detected using mass spectrometry and Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy techniques. The rules of Diels-Alder reactions in solid phase versus solution, and their application to alternative dienophiles with differing molecular properties, will be discussed

How Political Instability Affects Migration Crises and Refugees\u27 Risk for Human Trafficking: A Chicago Case Study

    No full text
“[A] student from the Congo, his mom, while she was fleeing their village, had to hide under a bush and birth him and then just … keep going” (F, 2r). Political turmoil in countries around the globe has dramatically increased the likelihood of forced migration among numerous populations,1 playing a role in their increased risk of victimization by human trafficking (HT).2 In recent years, Chicago, IL, has received an influx of migrants coming into the country at unprecedented rates, worsening issues such as acquiring legal status and inhibiting access to resources. This study explores the relationship between political instability, migration crises, and HT among asylum-seekers and refugees (ASRs) worldwide and in Chicago. Specifically, it focuses on ASRs who have been victimized by HT. Using qualitative data, this study utilizes the real-life experiences of agency members in Chicago who work with ASRs and gender-based violence (GBV) victims. Five major themes were identified using thematic analysis: At-Risk Circumstances and Revictimization, Experiencing Challenges Domestically, Shifting Cultural Norms, Path to Self-Sufficiency, and Finding Solutions. These findings have important implications for both refugee and GBV agencies in Chicago, including the need for increased resources, especially mental health services, (safe) housing, access to employment, and legal aid for ASRs living in Chicago

Motility in Urinary and Non-Urinary Bacterial Strains

A recent study from the Putonti lab concluded that there are two genetically distinct lineages of the bacterium Streptococcus anginosus: group 1, found throughout the body; and group 2, found in the urogenital tract. A 1995 study asserted that urinary strains of S. anginosus exhibited motility, but this was observed before current taxonomic classifications were established. Here I test for motility in both groups of S. anginosus. I expect to find evidence of motility in S. anginosus group 2, but not in group 1. This will add to the classification criteria of group 2 as S. anginosus subsp. urinae

    ALLP North American Review

This is a collection of letters showcasing the correspondence between poet Amy Lowell and editor Elizabeth Cutting. Through these letters, we understand how artistic movements are not only built on theory or aesthetics, but also on collaboration, mentorship, and personal connection. By showcasing these letters with minimal editorial intervention, we invite readers to experience modernism not only as letters on a page, but as emotional, personal, and evolving conversation. This collection serves as a reminder that literature is as much about relationships as it is about texts

Comparative Utilization of Neuroimaging in Telemedicine Versus In-Person Visits for Migraine and Headache Management: A Retrospective Analysis

This retrospective study evaluated the use of neuroimaging in telemedicine versus in-person initial visits for patients with migraines and headaches over one year. Of 467 patient visits, 22.05% were via telemedicine and 77.9% were in-person. Neuroimaging, including MRI, MRA, and CT scans, was ordered less frequently after telemedicine visits (2.35%) than in-person visits (15.4%), reflecting a 6.55 times higher ordering rate in the in-person group. These findings suggest important considerations for clinical decision-making and healthcare costs in headache management. Further research is needed to understand the factors influencing imaging decisions in telemedicine and in-person visits

Potential of Organically-Sourced Fulvic Acid to Increase Bioavailability of Calcium in Hydroponic Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and Reduce Tip Necrosis

Fulvic acid may reduce tip necrosis in the Salanova® Red Gem lettuce cultivar, often caused by calcium deficiency. We treated lettuce with Hoagland’s fertilizer and FA in a full factorial experiment, hypothesizing FA-treated groups would increase calcium concentration and reduce tip necrosis. Response variables of tissue calcium concentration and tip necrosis percentage were analyzed using multifactor ANOVA and regression. Tissue calcium concentration was measured using the Dumas Method and ICAP. FA increased calcium uptake (P = 0.03) yet did not reduce tip necrosis (P = 0.94). Other factors beyond calcium uptake likely contributed to tip necrosis, notable for future research

Exploration of Modifications to Markov Chains Constructing Fractals and Fractal-like Patterns

    No full text
It is well known that the Sierpinski triangle fractal can be generated through many iterations of the Chaos Game (CG). This project takes the concept of the CG and applies different modifications to the parameters of the game, builds a transition matrix for the steps in CG, and extracts interesting eigenvalues from the transition matrix

Expansions on Empathy for Autistic Experiences

Traditional views of autism define autism by its socio-communicative deficits, furthermore establishing that autistic agents are incapable of Theory of Mind and empathizing with other agents. Despite this, first-person accounts of autism state that autistic agents do experience empathy. This conflict calls for a reconceptualization of empathy to better account for autistics experiences that it typically discounts. In reimagining empathy as a dialogical empathic process, I hope to disentangle and delineate areas where autistic experiences of empathy are misrecognized or overlooked-- otherwise, areas of misunderstanding. In doing so, I seek to widen the conditions of success in regards to empathy-- expand what experiences and behavior are recognized as valid displays of empathy
