The European Union One Health 2024 Zoonoses Report
Abstract This report by the European Food Safety Authority and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control presents the results of zoonoses monitoring and surveillance activities carried out in 2024 in 27 Member States (MSs), the United Kingdom (Northern Ireland) and eight non‐MSs, according to the Zoonoses Directive 2003/99/EC. Key statistics on zoonoses and zoonotic agents in humans, food, animals and feed are provided and interpreted historically. In 2024, the first and second most reported zoonoses in humans were campylobacteriosis and salmonellosis, respectively, followed by Shiga toxin‐producing Escherichia coli (STEC) infections. Listeriosis was the fourth and most severe zoonotic disease, with the highest percentage of hospitalisations and the highest case fatality rate. The number of cases reported in the last 5 years showed a significant increasing trend in campylobacteriosis, salmonellosis, listeriosis and STEC infections. Fourteen MSs and the United Kingdom (Northern Ireland) met all targets for reducing Salmonella prevalence in poultry populations for the relevant serovars. Salmonella samples from various animal carcases, and samples for Campylobacter quantification in broiler carcases, were more frequently positive when carried out by the competent authorities than with food business operators' own checks. Twenty‐seven MSs and the United Kingdom (Northern Ireland) reported more food‐borne outbreaks, cases and hospitalisations in 2024 than in 2023, although the number of deaths decreased. Salmonella in ‘eggs and egg products’ was the agent/food pair of most concern. Salmonella was also the causative agent associated with the majority of multi‐country outbreaks reported in the EU in 2024. Foods of non‐animal origin, and in particular ‘vegetables and other products thereof’, caused the largest number of deaths in strong‐evidence outbreaks. This report also provides updates on brucellosis, echinococcosis, trichinellosis, tuberculosis due to Mycobacterium bovis, rabies as well as other zoonotic bacteria, viruses and parasites in food and animals
Data Work in Egypt: Who Are the Workers Behind Artificial Intelligence?
The report highlights the role of Egyptian data workers in the global value chains of Artificial Intelligence (AI). These workers generate and annotate data for machine learning, check outputs, and they connect with overseas AI producers via international digital labor platforms, where they perform on-demand tasks and are typically paid by piecework, with no long-term commitment.Most of these workers are young, highly educated men, with nearly two-thirds holding undergraduate degrees. Their primary motivation for data work is financial need, with three-quarters relying on platform earnings to cover basic necessities. Despite the variability in their online earnings, these are generally low, often equaling Egypt's minimum wage. Data workers' digital identities are shaped by algorithmic control and economic demands, often diverging from their offline selves. Nonetheless, they find ways to resist, exercise ethical agency, and maintain autonomy.The report evaluates the potential impact of Egypt's newly enacted labor law and suggests policy measures to improve working conditions and acknowledge the role of these workers in AI's global value chains

Ce rapport spécial du GIEC des Pays de la Loire propose une analyse approfondie des vulnérabilités humaines et territoriales face aux changements climatiques. Il rappelle l’impératif d’une adaptation juste, pensée à l’échelle locale, construite avec les populations et fondée sur une solidarité active. Car anticiper les impacts ne suffira pas : il faut aussi agir sur leurs causes, pour limiter l’ampleur des perturbations à venir.

SPICe Chronicles 2025: The Year with Hot Papers, a Spicy New Lecture and a Sizzling Round of Applause
With the year coming to a close, we reflect on the past twelve months and start a new tradition of an annual report on research, teaching, life, the universe, and everything surrounding the Security and Privacy in Industrial Cooperation (SPICe) group at RWTH Aachen University. While 2024 was characterized by change, especially concerning the composition of the team and our move to temporary offices while the computer science building gets partly renovated, this year focused on consolidation and embarking on new endeavors spanning across research, teaching, and our team. Most notably, on the research side, we again managed to land a paper at USENIX Security 2025 this year and were successful in positioning our research at further high-ranked venues (including IEEE EuroS&P and ACM WiSec). On the teaching side, we bootstrapped a new lecture on Industrial Data Security and kicked-off a project to enhance our lecture on Industrial Network Security with hands-on security training. Strategically growing our team, we are happy to welcome Gabriel from the German Aerospace Center (DLR) as an external PhD candidate to the team. Looking back proudly at the past year ourselves, we were honored by various forms of external recognition of our dedication to research and teaching. Besides nominations for the best paper and teaching awards, we are especially proud that the contributions of our students were recognized through multiple awards. We report on these and many more notable events, including a timeline of the year at SPICe, an overview of the projects that kept us busy, a brief summary of the scientific publications documenting our research output, a revisit of our teaching activities, as well as the composition of our team. Wrapping up, we provide an outlook for exciting new endeavors for next year
