The Non-Predictability of Mispredicted Branches using Timing Information

    No full text
Branch misprediction latency is one of the most important contributors to performance degradation and wasted energy consumption in a modern core. State-of-the-art predictors generally perform very well but occasionally suffer from high Misprediction Per Kilo Instruction due to hard-to-predict branches. In this work, we investigate if predicting branches using microarchitectural information, in addition to traditional branch history, can improve prediction accuracy. Our approach considers branch timing information (resolution cycle) both for older branches in the Reorder Buffer (ROB) and recently committed, and for younger branches relative to the branch we re-predict. We propose Speculative Branch Resolution (SBR) in which, N cycles after a branch allocates in the ROB, various timing information is collected and used to re-predict.Using the gem5 simulator we implement and perform a limit-study of SBR using a TAGE-Like predictor. Our experiments show that the post-alloc timing information we used was not able to yield performance gains over an unbounded TAGE-SC. However, we find two hard to predict branches where timing information did provide an advantage and thoroughly analysed one of them to understand why. This finding suggests that predictors may benefit from specific microarchitectural information to increase accuracy on specific hard to predict branches and that overriding predictions in the backend may yet yield performance benefits, but that further research is needed to determine such information vectors

    No full text
The common objectives of MSH and BiodivOc in terms of multidisciplinarity and inter-community synergies are at the origin of this initiative. Together, they have created the Working Group (WG) ‘Biodiversity’: a tool for dialog and co-production of knowledge composed of members of BiodivOc, MSH Sud (Trait d'union scheme), the Regional Biodiversity Agency (ARB), Man And the Biosphere (MAB France), and the Natural History Museum of Toulouse. This WG has tested a new interface that establishes a concrete and dynamic link, with a view to sustainability, between research stakeholders and biodiversity management stakeholders in Occitanie (parks, agencies and associations). The main objective was to identify the needs of the various communities (research, expertise, methodological support, experimental sites, etc.) and to provide an appropriate, concrete and applicable response by bringing together research and field stakeholders (provision of existing knowledge, scientific support, etc.) and/or developing collaborative projects (research projects, student internships, etc.). The aim was to establish lasting synergies between research, biodiversity management stakeholders and civil society in Occitanie, and to develop/strengthen the biodiversity system within Trait d'union (and other science shops or similar intermediation systems that may be created in Occitanie) by offering a privileged space for mutual understanding and resources capable of guaranteeing the conditions for the co-construction of research in the field of ‘Biodiversity’, in accordance with the rules of scientific ethics and in a spirit of fairness between academic partners – from all disciplines – and non-academic partners.

How can the sustainability of a university be measured? How can we know whether an institution is evolving within a space that is both ecologically safe and socially just? DonUTT, an adaptation of Kate Raworth’s Doughnut model to the context of the University of Technology of Troyes (UTT), provides a structured response to these questions. The method simultaneously assesses pressures on the environment (the “ecological ceiling”) and the extent to which fundamental human needs are met (the “social foundation”).Two main challenges guided its development. The first was to translate a global framework—the planetary boundaries—into a local, campus-scale context. The second was to rethink the social foundation so as to include psychological and relational well-being, which are essential to understanding the lived experience of members of the UTT community. Measuring these dimensions required explicit methodological choices: selecting boundaries, defining thresholds, collecting data, and constructing indicators aligned with the concept of sustainability. This participatory approach was designed to be reproducible by other institutions. Existing doughnut models served as a source of inspiration while also highlighting the need for a renewed approach that is more consistent with UTT’s specific reality. DonUTT made it possible to identify major trends. The results reveal a contrasted situation: several social boundaries lie within sustainable zones, while certain ecological boundaries—such as climate and land use—exceed the defined thresholds. These findings are not a sanction; they help identify room for improvement and prioritize areas for action.DonUTT thus stands as an evolving and structuring tool, a starting point for guiding future transformations and engaging UTT on a trajectory that is more just, safer, and more sustainable.

    No full text
This study examines how the French public perceives climate change, engages with information on the issue, and evaluates its media coverage. It is based on a survey conducted in September 2025 among a representative panel of 3,907 French respondents. The findings are compared with those of a comparable study carried out in the summer of 2022. The results show that, overall, respondents report being less dissatisfied than in 2022 with media coverage of the climate crisis. However, this trend is not accompanied by an improved public understanding of the anthropogenic nature of climate change or of the severity of its consequences.
