Marketing Library and Information Services on the Green Road of Web 2.0: The Library Perspective
Technological advancement has ushered a great change in the knowledge economic sector-the way people communicate, and in the process of information collection, organization and dissemination considered are to be crucial for providing the right information to the right customer (users) at the right time in a customizable, personalized, and collaborative way to the users which is imperative for the information professional. The role of the library is crucial in developing the novel thought to support the intellectual growth and success of the individuals and institutions that they serve in responding to these changes. The web 2.0 movement emerged as a response to the modern means for upgrading the libraries into more user-centered in the present library marketing scenario. In this paper, the author has vividly described marketing library services from user perspectives by applying social networking tools on the green road of marketing library and information services. Social networks enabling matrimonial information services in India
International Journal of Library and Information Science. Vol. 2(4), p.54–64, May 2010.Marriage information is an integral part of the knowledge base in any civilized society. In India, several non-government agencies as well as de-institutionalized sources provide a great variety of marriage related information in different domains of the society. Despite various modes in transferring matrimonial information, increasing use of social networks offers new opportunities for newer matrimony services. The purpose of this paper is to present the state-of-the-art of popular matrimony service portals emerged in India for providing SDI (selective dissemination of information) based personalized services to multifarious groups of the nation. Addresses of selective portals provide glimpses of current Indian activities on matrimonial information systems and services. It also examines the potentialities of the four biggest matrimonial players (viz. shaadi, bharatmatrimony, jeevansathi and simplymarry) in the country consistent with the present and anticipated needs of the marriage-information-seekers. Comparison has been carried out based on the web metrics. The paper noticed that online matrimony services would have ever-increasing importance in satisfying the objectivity of social networking practices
Comparative evaluation of open source digital library packages
Paper presented at OSLS -2009In the last decade the way to publish and access information has been changed a lot because of the
availability of open access repositories. This became possible because of a varied range of open
source repository packages. Other reasons like every year deduction in library budget and
increasing urge to show more visibility of their institute, popular institutions also started
establishing repositories. This paper starts with giving brief introduction of different open access
models, open source philosophy and some of the expectations from a digital library package and
tries to evaluate DSpace, EPrints and Greenstone.
Purpose:
This paper tries to evaluate some of the most popular digital library packages. It can help digital
library administrators to decide among the available packages.
Methodology:
The evaluation is done by using a checklist having different categories. The categories are provided
with weights according their importance for the package.
Findings:
The study shows that most of the softwares are in developing stage but are good at providing a
good service. Among DSpace, EPrints and Greenstone. DSpace emerged as best option
Free Software For Content Management in Libraries
The present paper discusses the availability of free software for content management that libraries can use to provide various web-based information services. In these days where library budgets have become stagnant or are being drastically cut, free software allow libraries under financial constraints, to render 24x7, remote and universal access to their information services to the library users. The paper covers the features of three content management systems i.e. Drupal, Joomla! and Plone. All the three software are already being used by various libraries and provide library-specific modules/extensions. Depending on the type of library, services provided and target clientele, libraries can choose any one of them, which suits their particular requirements
Webometric Analysis of Central Universities in India: A Study
Web presence of Indian Universities has been
reflected in general and Central Universities in particular.
Webometric data have been collected through Yahoo! and
Google search engines using special query syntax. An
attempt has been made to rank Central Universities in
India using appropriate webometric indicators. Results
reveled that University of Delhi becomes top rank (with
score 4.28 and Sikkim University occupied the last (with
score 1.64) among Central Universities in India
Web Presence of Selected Asian Countries: A Webometric Study
The paper focuses on the Web presence and visibility of Asian countries websites. The paper tries to highlight the Web presence using some webometric indicators like Internet access, webpages, number of Internet users, and link studies. The study analyzes the web presence using popular search engines like Altavista, Google, Yahoo and MSN. An attempt has also been taken to find out the Web Impact Factor (WIF) for selected Asian countries. The result shows that China (43.7%), Japan (16.7%) and India (10.4%) occupy highest web presence amongst Asian countries based on the total number of effective Internet users. China being the second highest number of Internet users having 11.8% after USA (19.7%) followed by India with 4.9% of world Internet Users and Japan is having the highest number of webpages followed by China and South Korea
Information Marketing Through Liaison Programs in India: Perspectives and Concerns
This paper draws upon today’s information organizations – libraries, archives and museums and how these cultural entities should be equipped to manage and usher in change, keeping pace with the fast changing web environment to realize their mission, relevance and purpose. The information services industry is undergoing a turbulent phase in our times, wherein the information is produced, traded, repacked, copied, reproduced, rehashed and re-sold. While information products and services are conveyed through conventional ways, it is the liaison program – which takes the place of classical ways of marketing by becoming the brand ambassador of ‘information marketing.’ Library liaisons are trained and engaged in such a way that they take on the role of aggressive salesman to marshal information and to promote the library services and information literacy. It also examines the role of librarians in the emerging digital economy to envisage and foster academic and research activities in learning organizations through library liaisons maximizing better results as a knowledge nerve centre
