    Get PDF
Standards for library work and service form an essential base for planning of library and documentation systems. Areas amenable for standardization a rementioned. Forms of standardisation, methods of setting up standards, impediments for performance standards are presented. Some important standards for the provision of library staff on the basis of library stock, current acquisition rate, number of readers to be served and financial provision in different countries, are given. Suggests a conscious utilisation of techniques in work study, time study and the principles of economics for the development of performance standards. Planning of library and documentation systems can be made more reliable if we have a well tested performance standards

A generalised approach to the problem through a computer programme is proposed. A COBOL programme f o r K-400 system is developed and the details described. Using the programme, some 900 Indian periodical titles are abbreviated . The programme can serve as a small sub routine to transfer the Indian periodical titles in a standardized way before any machine readable input preparation

The problems in identifying non-hierarchical associative relationships (NHR) among ideas are indicated. About thirty types of NHR, taken from different sources, are enumerated. The representation of NHRs between component ideas of subjects as facet relation (FR), speciator relation (SpR), coordinate relation (CR), and phase relation (PR) according to S R Ranganathan's model for structuring of subject is illustrated with examples. The use of the subject structures as data base for. computer-generation of thesaurus and guidelines for the direct representation of the NIIR -- identified as FR, SpR, CR, and PR -- as RT links in the thesaurus, are briefly discussed
