Application of Electronic Data Processing Equipment for Bibliographic Processing of Information in NAL Library
The application of electronic data
processing equipment for circulation control and book ordering at the NAL Library are presented. The various card designs used in the process and the operations on the machine are outlined. Implementation of these operations on a modern digital computer is outlined
Computerisation at the TIFR Library
The paper gives general account of the various library procedure that have been computerised in teh TIFR Library and describes in detail a fully computerised on-line interactive current awareness (SDI) cum retrospective search information system for storing and retrieving bibliographic information in teh field of "DrosoDhila". Also discussed are future plan 19 such as 0016 (Data Base Management System) for information retrieval, compilation of Institute research publications
A Descriptive account of Bibliographic Data Base on HP 21 MX Computer System at IPAG
The details of the input procedure, .formulation of the s8arch profile and parameters for retrieval are given. AdvantagF9 of the system are, also, mentioned. Specimen copies of Input worksheet various data base reports (Computer outputs), Proforma for search request and Retrieval reports are enclosed as Appendix
An improvement and appraisal of Sorter-Based Information System in the field of Petroleum Processing
The paper discusses a medium scale man-machine information system developed at the Indian Institute of Petroleum ( I I P ) , Dehradun, around a simple sorter and
punched cards, and the recent improvement effected in the system by redesigning the storage and retrieval software. A controlled experiment to assess the efficiency of the system vis-a-vis the efficiency of the
earlier system wherein the Keyword-role (AICHE) combination was used for indexing references, is described. The advantages of prefiling of indexed cards under convenient
class heads for cutting the searching time, P. practice adopted by other organisations with similar sorter-oriented systems abroad, are discussed. The superiority of
the improved system over the earlier one in terms of storage as well as retrieval efficiency is established. A statistical binomial model is discussed to compare system
efficiencies to corroborate the results
An automatically produced Thesaurus
A procedure for the computer generation of a thesaurus from a set of descriptors, manually assigned to the documents in a library, is described. Recognises only a quasi-associative relationship among desciptors. the specific advantages of the thesaurus as an open-ended one, the keywords derived from actual documents being the most helpful in retrieving the documents, and as an aid in information search in the collection are pointed out. Computational procedures for generating the thesaurus inclue keyword statistics, matrix inversion, calculation of similarity matrix using Tanimoto coefficient, automatic cluster analysis using minmal-tree procedure, and compilation of groups and main groups of descriptors are given. An algorithm for the graphic display of the main groups of descriptors has been formulated. The main disadvantage of the procedure is that only a limited number of keywords can be processed within a reasonable computer CPU time. Points out that the procedure can be applied to a library of 10,000 to 20,000 documents with a keyword base of 1,000 words using about 3 hours of computing time
The UNESCO : IBE Education Thesaurus - an evaluation
The UNESC : IBE Education Thesaurus is evaluated from the point of view of an indexer for use in a manual system, by an experimental indexing of eductional literture -- books, periodical articles, reports and pamphlets -- the suitability of the Thesaurus is explored. The paper examines the grouping of the descriptors into seven fields and the range and coverage of each field. An attempt is also made to examine its adaptability for a national system
Exploration and Production Thesaurus : its helpfulness in indexing in a Library and information System
Exploration and Production (E & P) thesaurus published by the Information Service Department, University of Tulsa, is one of the most comprehensive thesaurus in its coverage on the exploration, development and production of crude oil and natural gas. The thesaurus is in continuous use in the Library of the Oil and Natural Gas Commission for indexing the literature and in the development of special schemes of classification for local use. The paper indicates the usefulness of the thesaurus for indexing the entries covered in the various bibliographies and for the preparation of a special scheme of classification for Exploration Geophysic
Candidate terms for a thesaurus : a case study of sources of terms in the field of Library and Information Science
The choice of candidate terms from different sources of information such as dictionary, encyclopaedia, textbook, indexing and abstracting periodicals, classification schemes, are discussed. The availability of
such sources in the field of library and information science and their helpfulness in the choice of candidate terms and in fixing the interrelationship between them, have been discussed. It is observed that the reference sources such as dictionary and encyclopaedia, textbooks, and classifica-
tion schemes provide terms which are stabilised in the field, whereas the
indexing and abstracting services provide terms of recent origin and current usage. Thus a thesaurus for information retrieval should judiciously choose candidate terms from a variety of sources
