towards a change
During the past forty
two years, the Journal has firmly established itself as one of the premier
research publications (and only one of its kind) in India. It is also covered by
many international secondary journals, such as INSPEC Science Abstracts
(Parts A, B&C); Mathematical Reviews, Chemical Abstracts, Engineering
Index and COMPENDEX, BIOSIS, Indian Science Abstracts, etc
Of references and intellectual debts
A reference is a formal description of a document source with a set of
elements in a standardised sequence. It is an integral part of a research
paper and plays an important role in its life. It enables the readers to identify,
locate, understand and decide whether the cited paper should be consulted
or not
Information technologies for libraries and information centres
For the past few years, the tremendous
strides taken in the fields of information
technologies have changed the society into an
information conscious society. There is little
doubt that the impact of these technologies on
the day-to-day functions of information centres
is an everlasting one. The innumerable
advances in different fields such as computers,
communi- cations, electronic mail, voice mail,
teletext, videotext, telefax, videodisc,
CD-ROM, electronic publishing, etc have left
no area in the library, and information field
immune for their application. And many areas
still remain undiscovered.
This paper, first in a series, makes an
attempt to overview the impact of the
information technologies on the library and
information services. A brief discussion of
electronic message and documentdelivery
systems,and electronic mail are also
presented
Towards a standard style for bibliographic references
This paper discusses the need for a standard style for bibliographic references (BRs) or citations given usually at the end of a journal article or a chapter of a book. It also suggests to authors, editors and publishers some ways in which standardization in the preparation of BRs can be achieved
Phase relations associated with mathematical sciences
An analysis of quantitative data on the incidence of phase relations associated
with mathematical sciences is presented. It has been found that application and bias
phase relations have high percentage of incidence. Physical sciences show a greater
tendency for phase relations wittr mathematics. It is also observed that intra-subject
phase relations with mathematics is fairly frequent
Computerised Personnel Information System
Describes a methodology for developing a
computerised Personnel Information System.
Outlines the input preparation. output design and ,data manipulation for efficient information retrieval
Semi-automatic method of preparing Thesaurus for a specific Subject-field
This paper discusses briefly a methodology developed for the application computer for the generation of a thesaurus for a specific subject-field
Processing of INIS Data Base at BARC
The International Nuclear Information System (INIS) is a computer-based information system working on the principle of maximum decentralisation and minimum centralisation. The participating Member States and
international organisations prepare the inputs on a decentralised basis and the inputs so received are centrally processed and made available as INIS Atomindex - an indexing and abstracting periodical in
the field of nuclear science and technology. As a by product, the magnetic tapes containing the entries in the
periodical are made available to the participants. The Library and Information Services of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Bombay, is the national inputting centre for INIS and receives the IN IS output tapes. These are processed using a DEC-10 computer facility of the National Centre for Software De,relopment and Computing Techniques (NCSDCT). The computer processing) a basic computer program query formulation technique and Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI) service are explained. The INIS record format and the processing record format, which is a fixed length record format, are described. The computer programs, are written in COBOL
Common Format for Machine Readable Bibliographic Record for India : a proposal
A proposal for a national standard for
bibliographic information on magnetic tape both for information services and the library community in India is presented. The format is based on MARC and the UNISIST-RM. The structure of the format is as
defined in ISO 2709 – 1973 and the content
designators are formed using a three character numeric tag, a six character indicator and a two character subfield identifier. The third character
position in the indicator is used as a repeat count the fourth, fifth and sixth character positions. are used to indicate the length of the field of that repetition. The format includes many coded information to cater to the requirements of the
computer-based information system for Science and Technology, that is being developed in India. It is proposed to use ISBDs for choice and form of data items and use International standards for the
character set for the representation of the data items. It is indicated that this format could be transformed into that of an international standard for exchange purpose by ormat transformation process. A complete set of tags, indicators and subfield identifiers and a table of UNISIST-RM data elements that correspond to the proposed format are given
