    Bibliographic Search Instruction for Web-Users

    Get PDF
Most of the Libraries and information centres, now-a-days, have acquired access to Internet. Users of these libraries and information centres are making good use of this facility. However, it has been observed that freshers and laymen find it difficult to browse Net effectively. Whenever they attempt to browse they often fail to get the desired results. In other words, these neo-users do not know about the proper searching instructions used while browsing the Web. Henceforth, knowledge of search instructions is very much necessary if one wants to browse the Web with desired results. There are various search engines that offer simple and advanced searching like Yahoo, Alta-Vista, Excite, Lycos, Hotbot, etc. But searching of required information is possible only when one is aware of the syntax used in making a search. This paper gives information about the searching instructions used in different search engines while making a query. This paper also gives information about the ‘phrase searching’, ‘truncation’, ‘Boolean logic’, ‘case and accent sensitivity’, etc., that will prove helpful to the users in browsing the web

Design and Development of Web-Based Databases of Current Periodicals at Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur

    Get PDF
The library of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IITKGP) was the first library in India which attempted to set up an electronic library for its clientele under the auspices of AICTE. While placing the library of IITKGP on Internet, the facilities offered by the WWW are exploited to provide information services of more than 1000 current periodical titles (with hard copy to on-line). This paper begins with a brief description of the electronic resources available in the Central Library, IITKGP. As the web sites are being set up by the libraries of all IITs, it is emphasized that the use of Internet will enable to share their resources in general and periodical publications in particular. Highlights the various types of web-based information services on scholarly journals including electronic journals (full text) which are linked to publishers’ addresses. Discusses the methods, with illustrative examples, associated with the creation of several web-based tools like alphabetical list of periodicals including availability of CD-ROM databases, both in full text as well as abstracting and indexing journals, on-line journals (full text), departmentwise list of periodicals, current arrival list of periodicals, union list of periodicals (3500) subscribed by all IITs for resource sharing purpose and other free on-line services provided by the various publishers. Key word search program, hardware and software requirements, HTML tags to create several hyper linked files, editors and Internet solution for automatic web-page designing are also presented

Electronic Journals : Access and Delivery Models

    Get PDF
Several factors have been successfully pushing the conservative science publishers to accept the transition to e-journals. Some of the influancing factors are, the conveniences of web for access and browsing, the economics of Internet for delivery, the digital library revolution etc. The paper discusses the technological history of E-journals, access models, archiving, pricing and other several issues

Secondary and Tertiary "Electronic" Souces of Information

    Get PDF
A key to finding the primary sources of information is the secondary and tertiary sources of information. These sources in the electronic form started with the online information retrieval systems. They have since evolved from magnetic tapes to the microforms and then to the CD ROMs. Now these are also available as DVDs and on the Internet. These sources have become an inevitable part of a scholar or a researcher's or even a student's pursuit of information. This paper is an attempt to give an overall view of some of the "electronic" secondary and tertiary sources of information

Document Identification and Classification Using Transform Coding of Gray Scale Projections and Neural Tree Network

    Get PDF
In today’s technological environment, there is a definite need to identify and classify documents reliably. The existing approaches are not likely to prove effective in practical applications because of large dynamic range and high computational cost. This paper discusses the approach that involves a preliminary data reduction step, gray scale projections and transform technique that greatly reduces the computational complexity of the problem. Further classification is successfully achieved using neural network. Subsequently, the robustness of this approach to different conditions are provided

E-Journals in Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities : A Critical Study

    Get PDF
The previously arcane electronic publishing has now changed into a popular everyday phenomenon fulfilling the exciting promises of many years. In recent years, a respectable portion of the traditional top journals in various disciplines have started offering new channels of access via electronic media that do not differ essentially from their paper formats. Increasingly more full text editions are appearing on the Internet. These electronic versions have both merits and demerits. Some of the advantages include improved retrieval and hyperlinking capabilities and speed of production and distribution. Disadvantages posed by e-journals include technological barriers, economic barriers etc. This paper critically examines some of the important e-journals in disciplines like Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities

Science News Services on the Internet

    Get PDF
Science is the design or conduct of reproducible experiments to test how nature works, or formulation of theories that can themselves be tested by such experiments. It is the research that makes science so powerful and exciting. Science adds to our store of knowledge. It is the seeking that makes science what it is. Research is the very important component of science. Scholarly journals report the results of research, but only months after the fact. Given the high and increasing costs of paper publishing, they are expensive. This puts them virtually out of reach for many individuals and even many institutions, especially those in less developed nations. Even the appearance of Ejournals have not solved the problem, because of the high cost of subscription. So, there is a need for a faster and cheaper medium of communication of science news. This paper, discusses about the fast and cheaper mode of communications of science news, i.e. ‘Science news on the web’. Bits move virtually instantaneously; a news release sent by e-mail can be on any World Wide Web news page within minutes. These are the forces that come together to make a science news service on the web a virtual necessity. Many of the sites in the Internet have been dedicated for Science and Technology news. They are discussed in detail. These include Scinews, Eurekalert, Scicentral, Unisci, Scilink, Sciencedaily, etc

Web Page Designing : An Introduction

    Get PDF
Geologists and natural biologists have proved that world has been shrinking over the past millions of years. But technologists have proved that it does not take even half a century to shrink so much (though not geographically), thanks to the advent of Internet and advances in telecommunication. Today, we can learn about any corner of the world with a mere click of the mouse. Internet has become the world’s window to information and Web pages serve as the information-carrying documents. This paper gives an introduction to Webrelated concepts, Web page designing using HTML codes and MS FrontPage

    Digitization : Vision and Task

    Get PDF
This paper discusses the problems and difficulties encounterd by traditional library systems while preserving and maintaining the library material. The paper tries to document in the form of DL, how to preserve and maintain the traditional and old records of library and information centres. It also discusses the various aspects of digital libraries like its definition, advantages and disadvantages of digitization. Digital library is a powerful tool of preservation, because there are tremendous amount of facilities, advantages and sustainability which in a far comprehensive and greater way exists over the traditional libraries. The paper in the main stream of thought compares and contrasts the traditional library and new form of digital library in order to arrive at a conclusion for a necessity and need for making digitization. This paper discusses the need and advantages of Digitization. It highlights the process of digitization which will be helpful in undertaking the digitization projects and utilizing the funds in digitizing their resources
