Localization, Internationalization and DSpace
Get PDFIn common with most software, DSpace was written with an English speaking audience in mind. It has subsequently been adopted by users for whom English is not a first language, and to store resources in non-English languages and scripts. This broadening of language base looks set to continue.
Localization is an inevitable consequence of this broadening user base, as new users adapt the software to support content in new languages, and customize the interface so that it can be used by non-English speakers.
Without internationalization, localization efforts are isolated, difficult and often have no standard approach. In order to expedite the global distribution of DSpace, it is important to look at ways of unifying and facilitating localization efforts through internationalization.
This article will explain some approaches to internationalization and localization, and highlight some of the difficulties and complexities involved. It will describe the current capabilities of DSpace software with regard to internationalization and localization, and look ahead at how, and when, these capabilities might be enhanced
Strategic issues in training and development in the it service industry at Kolkata region: a study

InfoTech sector is a thrust area of economic development in developing economies, like in India. Government and private joint initiatives make this sector a sunshine industry sector. Potentials of human resources explore in the professionally managed IT service companies. The training and development activities strengthen capabilities of IT service companies and help them to achieve excellence. Present study evaluated the heart of this knowledge industry, which centered on knowledge workers. Present study briefly elaborated the training and development practices of two top-ranked companies in Kolkata and found some unique modes of delivery of training. This study also pointed out that companies placed in higher value-chain have long-term vision as compared to ones in lower in value-chain

Bibliographic utility networks

Some cases have also described in order to get in-depth knowledge on their core services. The services of a bibliographic utility network are centred on online union catalogue database. Some bibliographic utility networks derived a number of services from their exhaustive union catalogue database to be used by different segments of clienteles. The services are not only contributory from participating institutions but also accessible to non-participating customers for search-only services. Their products have intense reference value to the libraries worldwide. Their expansion beyond their origin also have described here, which reflected in phenomenon growth in their services and membership. Some successful bibliographic utility networks, i.e., Online Computer Library Center (OCLC), Research Libraries Information Network (RLIN), Western Library Network (WLN), UTLAS and Kinetica have described here, and these utility networks have wider impact on library and information services. Getting maximum benefit from the DSpace project

Web Enabling a Bibliographic Database of Indian Biomedical Journals: IndMED

(Software Systems) Degree from BIRLA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENCE, PILANI (RAJASTHAN); 2001.The project aims to provide access through web to a bibliographic database called IndMED. The database is a product of Indian Medlars Centre (IMC, a division of National Informatics Centre) and has data relating to references to articles published in India’s learned biomedical journals. The scope of this project is limited to providing a web-based user interface for database searching and developing the CGI for Web-Database Connectivity.
The project was planned to ensure its scheduled completion. A survey of relevant research and technologies pertaining to Web Interface, Web-Database Connectivity and DBMS have been made and briefly described in the dissertation. Interview, Questionnaire and Observation of similar systems were utilized to determine the requirements of the proposed system. Specification of the proposed system was then based on the requirements.
After the requirements and the specification of the proposed system was finalized an Analysis Model consisting of Data Flow Diagrams (DFDs) and Entity-Relationship Diagram (ERD) was developed. Design of the system was then developed for the sub-systems – Web-Interface, Web-database Connectivity and DBMS - so the requirements and specifications are met. The Web-Interface mainly consists of html pages i.e. Simple Search Form, Minimal Search Form and Advanced Search Form and the dynamically generated by CGI the Search Result Screen. The Web-Database Connectivity sub-system consists of PERL Scripts dealing with Processing of data submitted from html forms, Variables assignment, Error Trap, Formulation of query string which can passed on to the DBMS sub-system and Html Patching of the output of the database in response to the query.
The implementation of the system includes: the screens along with html code written for various search forms and generated by the CGI for the Web-Interface, Perl Scripts (IMSS.PL; IMAS.PL; IMRS.PL) for the CGI and the Database Structure, Fields included in Inverted File Index of the Database and Display Formats for the DBMS sub-system. The system thus developed was tested to meet the tests prescribed by the system specification. The final product has been integrated into the Home-page of IMC at the URL http://indmed.nic.in . A user help document for searching is also included. The system developed has scope for future research and refinement in regard to relevancy ranking, federated searching, links to full text articles and other material relevant to the user query available on the Internet along with the results from IndMED
