Present a library to the global community through WWW with proper content management to the library web site

There is no alternative or substitute to its abundance, utility and value. In the mist of fast emerging information explosion, finding particular relevant information is a very cumbersome job. The library professionals can’t avoid the effect of www as well as the emerging information explosion. They are now heavily involved in providing access to information through web. It is a challenge to them to design a qualitative website with proper content management and user interface that is easy and intuitive to those who use it. OpenURL for Accessing Reference Resources
No full textOpenURL is a mechanism for transporting metadata and identifiers describing a publication, for the purpose of context sensitive linking. OpenURL standard is designed to support mediated linking from information resources (sources) to library services (targets). It works with ‘Link Resolver System’ to facilitate seamless access to the referenced resource.
Here I have discussed the concept of OpenURL, and its significance. Given a demo of ‘Link Resolver System’ and demonstrate OpenURL through open source tools
Information literacy initiatives in India with special reference to emerging knowledge economy

Hosted by Faculty of Information Management, Universiti Teknologi MARA with the Librarians Association of MalaysiaKnowledge economy in India has emerged since 1990s with the advent of liberalization and globalization of Indian economy. Since then many Indian corporate organizations established their presence outside the country, forming an informal India Inc. in competing globally. The information infrastructure situation in India has also improved a lot since 1990s, not only in the corporate organizations that exploit knowledge resources for the profit making, but also in the public institutions that generate knowledge for the development of all aspects of society and humanity. Judicious use of information resources, available now mainly in the public institutions, especially in the higher educational and research institutions, should be measured in terms of information literacy of the stakeholders. Information literacy is required for effective use, consumption and assessment of information resources available in the institutions. Information literacy can also bridge the gap between digital divide that we observe in many grass-root level initiatives in India in the forms of ‘village knowledge centres’, ‘community information centres’, ‘e-choupals’, ‘gyandoot’, etc. ushered in with the participation of NGOs, developmental agencies and corporate organizations. Present study explores various initiatives in India that address information literacy in maximizing utilization of knowledge resources. This study also focuses on the various initiatives undertaken by different institutions, starting from the elementary level to the higher educational level, professional societies and other organizations.UNESCO

Brihaspati: An Open Source e-learning platform
Get PDFIn this paper, Brihaspati, an e-learning platform developed as open source freeware has been presented. This platform started to enable the faculty and students at Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur to use the web based infrastructure to share the lecture notes. Many features have been added since the project started. Currently, it is being used at many places in India. In the first phase of development, many design flaws were found and it resulted in development of Brihaspati-2, the second version. Also, due to need of delivering the lectures on Internet Brihaspati synch has also been developed. It is built over Java and works over IPv4 multicast for conducting live virtual classroom sessions
