Multilingual search engine: implementation using UNL
In this paper, I am proposing an implementation of
multilingual search engine using a Universal Networking Language
(UNL). As a local market for web is increasing there are increasing
numbers of pages in native language of customers. So it becomes very
important to search a information which is scattered in different
languages and present to the users of different languages. In my
approach UNL system, which is used for cross language access of
information, is used by spider in search engine to find out pages in
different native languages and converted into UNL before creating a
indexing. Once index are created retrieval is same as monolingual
retrieval
Changing roles of library professionals in the knowledge society
Library is an effective source of information to be shared by
people of all kinds. A good library hosts everything under the sun in the
form of words to enrich the knowledge of the users. Providing
information about everything under the sun, under one roof in one
geographical location is next to impossible. Hence there must be a way
to share information that is spread over, and that can be achieved only
through the effective use of electronic media. Complete
computerization of all the libraries and a dedicated, centralized server to
host information available at different libraries will help in effective
sharing of information. A library is completely computerized only if the
user irrespective of background or knowledge, is able to access
information available in the library from anywhere just by typing few
letters/words
A comparative study of the search and retrieval features of OAI harvesting services
Several OAI service providers (Harvesters) are coming up
providing cross-search services by harvesting metadata from OAI
compliant repositories. OAI facilitates quick discovery of content and
free exchange of information among repositories through Service
Providers (Harvesters). In order to achieve interoperability in their
operations, Service Providers need to incorporate a generalized set of
search and browse features in their search interface. Few parameters are
drawn to compare the search and retrieval features of harvesters and
arrived at a useful checklist for Service Providers to achieve
homogeneity and standardization while designing their search interfac
E-repository, information resources and resource sharing : a model for plantation crops research scientists
E-repository and information resources available to plantation
crops researchers are described. The various plantation crops grown in
the Indian sub-continent and the GNP and Foreign exchange earned by
these crops are described. Numerous Open Source Resources [OSR]
available to researchers in plantation crops /industry are stated. Initiative
taken in creation of open source e-resources in the world’s premiere
research organization is highlighted
Use of Indian digital libraries by biomedical practitioners in West Bengal region: a study
The use of Internet by students, teachers, researchers, journalists, librarians, information scientists, and numerous other professionals have already gathered momentum in our country with the strengthening of information infrastructure day-by-day. The number of Internet service providers, personal Internet connections, institutional Internet connections, cyber cafes, etc are also multiplying at a rapid rate. Biomedical practitioners in the world are also finding Internet-based information resources highly useful inasmuch as it is providing latest information about the harmful drugs being withdrawn, new drugs being introduced in the world, novel medical equipments being marketed, unique surgical techniques becoming successful, and so on. At this juncture, a question automatically arises as to what extent this facility is being used by biomedical practitioners of a region of our country, where computerization and Internet facility etc have started rather late.
The study aims to find out the use of Indian digital libraries by biomedical practitioners in the West Bengal region. The data is to be gathered through a structured questionnaire that was circulated among biomedical practitioners. The questionnaire seeks to elicit the information on the extent of the use of open access biomedical literature; awareness about the biomedical databases, electronic journals, digital libraries, digital archives, web portals of biomedical organizations, etc.
Digital libraries have already started coming up in India. National Institute of Science Communication and Information Resources is developing Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL), and National Informatics Centre is developing INDmed (Indian Biomedical Database), medIND (Indian Biomedical Literature) and OpenMed (Open Access archive on biomedical literature). All these databases are accessible free of cost. The study will lay special emphasis on the use of these biomedical information resources.
Based on the findings of the study, suggestions are made as to how the awareness among biomedical practitioners can be increased to optimize the use of biomedical information resources in general and Indian digital libraries in particular
Implementing LOM Schema in DSpace
DSpace facilitates Qualified Dublin Core. There have been attempts to extend DSpace ability to host other metadata schemes e.g. electronic theses and dissertations like Tapir. However, the user community has often expressed the requirement for other metadata formats like VRA core, IMS LOM etc. Support for many metadata formats will greatly enhance the use of DSpace and the type of resources that could be preserved using DSpace. Since version (1.2.2), DSpace comes with much needed input forms with which one can define ones own submission forms. This feature provides additional ability of adding any metadata format to DSpace, in addition to existing Qualified Dublin Core. This papers attempts to provide guidelines for modifying DSpace files to accommodate additional metadata formats like IMS-LOM
Learning Object Metadata and its application
A number of international efforts have been initiated during the past few years leading to the evolvement of various educational metadata specifications for the commonly agreed description of educational resources. Educational metadata can significantly enhance the effective description, search and retrieval of learning objects resulting in efficient organization of educational resources for technology supported instruction. As more and more applications are implemented using educational metadata, it becomes obvious that it would be difficult for a single metadata model to accommodate the functional requirements of all applications. This paper focuses on different existing educational metadata standards with the relative merits of each one, it will also examine the fundamental elements or basic structure of each one of the existing standards, and discuss the interoperability issues. Because of the various E-learning metadata standards that exist, interoperability is a major issue. A major barrier limiting system’s interoperability is the use of different specifications that define the structure and content of learning objects
ICT based Learning Environment
The paper discusses the new approach of imparting education through Information and Communication Technology. The author also briefly deals with various aspects of e-education, especially in higher education. It also discusses the tools of e-education and perspectives of different components of e-education system
E-Learning Tools and Technologies for Rural Development Community with special reference to training: Experiences of National Institute of Rural Development
The paper introduces various vital aspects of DLE, highlighting e-learning philosophy, tools and selection criteria for e-learning solutions. It presents a brief account of National Institute of Rural Development (NIRD) initiatives that have been taken using ICT tools by for the training of personnel involved in rural development programmes of central and state governments
