Beyond Lecturing: Christian Higher Education Faculty Perceptions of Professional Development Expectations and Its Impact on Job Satisfaction
This research study was conducted to ascertain possible connections between higher education faculty expectations of professional development and how these relate to their perceived job satisfaction. Several theories were used as the foundational framework, which included Bruner’s (1960) constructivist worldview theory, Herzberg’s (1966) two-factor theory, and Dockery’s (2012) faith learning integration. The research design for this qualitative study was a phenomenological hermeneutical study. The participants answered the two primary research questions: (a) What are the perceptions of Christian higher education faculty regarding professional development expectations? (b) How do Christian higher education faculty’s perceptions of professional development affect their job satisfaction? The participants consisted of six faculty members at a Christian University in the Southeast United States, and the data collected was comprised of written discussions, journal entries, and interviews. The data was analyzed using inductive coding, allowing natural codes to emerge, which were then categorized into overarching themes. Findings support the concept that providing resources to faculty facilitates growth through timely and applicable professional development, which can decrease pressure and increase their perceived sense of worth and fulfillment through institutional support
Life Immediately after Death
The Bible is the believed, canonical, complete message of God. It teaches morals, values, ethics, virtues, righteousness, truths, and salvation. Every part of life can and should be guided by the words of God for the purpose of accomplishing His final goal. God’s goal for his creation is to achieve through salvation and His grace dwelling with Him in His New Earth and New Heavens. To accomplish this, God created people to be immortal. Within this immortality, death plays an integral part. Because God begins His creation with a defining statement of how it all started, God facilitates an understanding that the creation will exist within the parameters of His desired, orderly time. Furthermore, humankind will constantly exist in one of God’s designed states of being. People will live on Earth, die, exist in the Intermediate State after death but before final judgement, and then live eternally in paradise with Him.
Unfortunately, not all states of being are easily discerned. Specifically, confusion exists as to what purpose God has for existence after death but before the final judgement. Some believe this stage of immortality, known as the Intermediate State, is just a stopping place or holding place where the soul or spirit resides until the completion of the New Earth and New Heavens. However, others believe the Intermediate State is a place called Purgatory where believers are further cleansed of sin so the goal of living with God forever is accomplished. Within this difference of opinions lies the dilemma of whether the Bible specifically describes the existence of the Intermediate State and if so to what purpose is its existence.
Understandably, believers in Purgatory and non-believers disagree as to whether Purgatory is identified in Scripture. Incidentally, the believers in Purgatory believe church tradition along with Scripture delivers the message of Purgatory’s existence. Therefore, the main conflict for the debate concerning Purgatory’s proof is whether without the influence of church tradition, Purgatory is witnessed in Scripture. In other words, the discussion concerns if tradition, handed down through generations orally, is the only way to prove Purgatory, or is it and must it be found in Scripture? Although Christian’s differ in opinion, some, Catholic believers especially, consider tradition essential, and insist Scripture identifies Purgatory’s reality.
Therefore, this review will first establish that the Intermediate State does exist. Identifying the Intermediate State starts with identifying the final Heaven and knowing that all human dwelling locations are included in what is known as The Kingdom of God. Secondly the analysis will assert Purgatory is not found in any biblical message. In addition, it will conclude that oral tradition has an impact on how Scripture is understood. Lastly, searching Scripture shows that the Intermediate State’s purpose is not direct

Into the Shadows in Context: A Personal Writing Philosophy, the Fantasy Tradition, and a Novella
It is important for the aspiring fantasy novelist to consider why he or she writes. Some personal motivations for writing include the desire to glorify God by mirroring His creativity, utilizing one’s talents, reflecting the Gospel of Christ, creating quality art, and providing clean entertainment. Christian authors should be free to pursue whatever type of writing they wish, knowing that when they focus on the story first, the message will flow into it naturally. In addition, fantasy novelists should study key works in this genre. Fantasy stories generally include otherworldly settings, magic, and the victory of good over evil. J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, J. K. Rowling, Christopher Paolini, Brandon Sanderson, Tricia Mingerink, and Tricia Levenseller have all authored works that meet these criteria in unique ways. A study of key fantasy novels by these authors will inspire personal creativity as I seek to contribute to this literary tradition through my novella Into the Shadows
More Than 9 Lives: Improving Shelter Cat Intake and Adoption Rates
Municipal animal shelters across the United States struggle to properly care for the cats housed in their facilities due to overpopulation. The sheer volume of cats entering shelters greatly outpaces the rate in which they are adopted out, resulting in an immense resource strain that too often results in the euthanasia of millions of shelter cats across the country each year. The enormous influx of cats is largely due to abandonment or considerable populations of feral, stray, or community cats living on the streets. In addition, shelter cat adoptions occur at a much slower pace, with many cats spending months, if not longer, in the care of shelters before either being adopted or euthanized.
Through a review of relevant literature, this thesis examines methods that humanely reduce the number of cats making their way into shelters each year, investigates key factors that influence a cat’s length of stay in a shelter before adoption, and explores two potential strategies for improving adoption rates for cats with behavioral problems. Additional research was conducted in the form of content and visual analyses to better understand the ways these issues are being addressed. The research indicates that while great strides towards combatting the problem are well under way, both heightened awareness and additional action is needed on both ends of the shelter cat process, from intake to adoption, in order to reduce shelter cat overpopulation
The Relationship Between the Jiu Jitsu Anaerobic Performance Test and Physiological Markers in Trained Jiu Jitsu Practitioners
Jiu Jitsu relies on aerobic and anaerobic energy systems. A relationship has been demonstrated between the Jiu Jitsu Anaerobic Performance Test (JJAPT) and anaerobic performance. The relationship between the JJAPT and aerobic performance has yet to be quantitatively defined. The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a relationship between the JJAPT and maximum oxygen uptake and ventilatory threshold (VT). Twenty-five Jiu Jitsu subjects participated in two test sessions a minimum of 48 hours apart. During one test session, descriptive statistics were collected, a self-guided treadmill warm-up was completed, followed by the Bruce graded exercise protocol. Ventilatory threshold was determined by computer plotting VO2peak and ventilation onto a line chart and confirmed by two researchers. Ventilatory threshold percentage was calculated by hand. The second test session included a JJAPT familiarization warm up and the JJAPT. Pearson correlation was used to determine the relationship between the JJAPT and VO2peak and between the JJAPT and VT. The main findings revealed a significant moderate positive correlation between VO2peak and the JJAPT, (r = 0.40, p = 0.025). Research has shown that Jiu Jitsu has dispersed lower intensity aerobic periods with more reliance on the anaerobic system. The moderate correlation with VO2peak is consistent with the energy system requirements for Jiu Jitsu. This study, in combination with previous studies, indicates the JJAPT provides reliable measures of Jiu Jitsu competition performance. It’s been concluded that the JJAPT could be used to evaluate BJJ athletes and track performance improvements
A Qualitative Study Exploring the Effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences on Development and the Role of Resilience in Shaping Adult Life
This qualitative study investigated the impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on development and examines how resilience shapes adult outcomes. Early life experiences significantly influence an individual\u27s lifelong development, with childhood experiences playing a particularly crucial role. Adverse childhood experiences, which encompass abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction, are recognized as a major public health concern due to their association with health disparities and psychosocial issues in various aspects of life, including substance use, relationships, education, and employment. Despite these challenges, some individuals demonstrate remarkable resilience, adapting to new circumstances and maintaining normal functioning in the face of adversity. Themes from respondents regarding resilience include faith in God and His transformative work, support from others, having a sense of purpose or calling. The theme of faith in God highlights the importance of spiritual beliefs and practices in helping individuals cope with and overcome adverse experiences. Support from others emerged as a critical factor, emphasizing the role of relationships and social connections in fostering resilience. Having a sense of purpose or calling, underscores the significance of finding meaning and direction in life as a means of overcoming adversity. The insights gained from this study may provide counselors and counselor educators awareness and insights to build on treatment modalities promoting resilience and validating the work put in by clients who seek to overcome adverse childhood experiences
