The Black Side of the Jesus Movement: Contemporary Gospel Music

    Get PDF
This study investigates the impact of James Cleveland, Andraé Crouch, Edwin Hawkins, and Walter Hawkins on contemporary gospel music following the Jesus Movement revival. Their music emerged concurrently with the birth of contemporary Christian music; however, their significant musical innovations have not been widely recognized as part of the Jesus Movement revival. Figuratively speaking, contemporary gospel music and contemporary Christian music are like “fraternal twins,” yet there has been insufficient research linking them together. The rationale for this study is to uncover the potential social and cultural barriers that contributed to their exclusion and disconnect. This research identifies these barriers and demonstrates how God utilizes music to draw His children closer to Him. Further analysis highlights the practical musical innovations introduced by these individuals, which transformed worship expressions within the Black Church and positively influenced contemporary culture. This ethnographic, qualitative study reveals elements that demonstrate the musical relationship between the Jesus Movement and the Black Church. It examines shared behavioral patterns of hippies during the mid-1960s and mid-1970s as they relate to the Black Church. Primarily narrative in nature, the study employs books and interviews to present biographical information about everyone, explore their musical influences, and analyze their musical journeys. The conclusions establish a connection between Cleveland, Crouch, Edwin Hawkins, Walter Hawkins, and the development of contemporary gospel music within the context of the Jesus Movement. Their relevance to the field of worship will be of interest to future worship leaders who may be unfamiliar with gospel music but are required to minister within multicultural congregations

The Measure of a Man: Considering Science Fiction and Christianity in the Regulation of Artificial Intelligence Models

    Get PDF
Does artificial intelligence “think,” and if it does, what should the law do about it? This article examines popular culture and the Turing Test to assess whether artificial intelligence “thinks,” applying the author’s engineering background and his Christian worldview. The author concludes that artificial intelligence mimics rather than creates and considers the risks and benefits of artificial intelligence given that conclusion. The author suggests that legal regulation should be measured, leaving important decisions to humans while at the same time encouraging development of this important, misunderstood technology

Evaluating the Utilization of ICD-10 Z-Codes for Documenting Social Determinants of Health and the Association with Frequent Emergency Department Visits Among Medicaid Beneficiaries

    Get PDF
This study assesses the use of ICD-10 Z-codes for documenting social determinants of health (SDoH) and examines their relationship with frequent emergency department (ED) visits among Arizona Medicaid-eligible beneficiaries. This retrospective cohort study utilizes claims data from a major Arizona Medicaid payor to explore the frequency of ICD-10 Z-codes use for documenting SDoH, associations between variables, and factors most strongly linked to higher ED utilization. The study sample (N = 53,368) includes Medicaid beneficiaries with ED visits in 2023, including 47,153 individuals without documented SDoH and 6,215 individuals with documented SDoH. Descriptive and statistical analyses, such as binomial tests, chi-square tests of independence, and binary logistic regression, were conducted. Findings indicate that 11.65% of beneficiaries had documented SDoH ICD-10 Z-codes, significantly higher than the CMS-reported national average of 1.59% (p \u3c .001). Chi-square analysis revealed a significant association between documented SDoH and frequent ED utilization (χ²(1) = 143.97, p \u3c 0.001), with beneficiaries having documented SDoH more likely to experience frequent ED visits (≥ 4 visits). Logistic regression identified housing and economic problems (Z59; OR = 1.231, p = 0.022) and psychosocial circumstances (Z64; OR = 2.668, p \u3c .001) as the strongest predictors of frequent ED visits. Despite statistical significance, the regression model’s predictive power was low (Nagelkerke R² = 0.006), indicating that additional factors contribute to frequent ED utilization. These findings emphasize the importance of addressing social risk factors and integrating SDoH documentation into care management strategies. Future studies should explore additional factors to better understand relationships influencing ED utilization

Media Richness in NFL Communications: A Content Analysis Case Study

    Get PDF
This qualitative study aimed to examine the social media engagement of fans of the National Football League (NFL). The central problem identified was a lack of understanding of brand storytelling across different social media platforms, particularly concerning the richness of information each platform provided. Guided by media richness theory, developed by Daft and Lengel, this research explored the varying communication styles employed in brand storytelling on social media. The study sought to provide insights into how NFL brands can effectively utilize different platforms to enhance their storytelling and engage with their audience more richly and effectively. The results indicate that the NFL brand is effectively utilizing media richness with few discrepancies. Findings show clear content themes and the effectiveness of media richness. For future research, researchers may consider applying media richness theory effectiveness to organizations outside of the sports industry

Curses & Versus: A Soldier\u27s Life In Verse

Every life is complicated. Since the Fall of Man, humans have used art to probe the tumult of the living and give meaning to the dead. The challenge comes when an artist must capture brief moments that define their work or explain the force that impelled their creations. What follows is my attempt to harness five aspects that contributed this work, the process of writing it, and its significance to the wider literary world. The snapshots presented stand on their own and do not require the others to make sense. However, when taken together they present the whole of a tormented life. A thin thread of hope weaves itself through war, death, and addiction towards a powerful climax of salvation and redemption. Witness the genesis of a war poet

Unburden the Pastoral Chair to Create a More Effective Minister

    Get PDF
This dissertation explores how to alleviate the burden on senior pastors to create more effective ministers. This research aims to explore the implications of the pastoral chair’s duties and responsibilities and focuses on how the church community can support the senior pastor through encouragement and awareness of the importance of maintaining the pastoral chair’s mental, emotional, and professional health. This research features a comprehensive literature review on the current state of senior pastors’ professional health and the impact that overwhelming duties and responsibilities impose on their professional confidence, ministry, and overall sense of productivity and accomplishment in providing pastoral services to their parishioners. The foundation of this research will involve the recruitment of lay leaders and implementing more training and service opportunities for those to serve in non-denominational capacities to provide ministry services to parishioners through visitation, eucharistic services, and Christian education growth and development. Generally, this dissertation and its research will contribute to the functionality of the church and the effective distribution of pastoral services from clergy and lay leaders operating in non-denominational roles

IOWA Test Scores Before and After COVID-19 in Early Adolescents

    Get PDF
This paper addresses past research that examined the effects of COVID-19 on academics and presents a study further examining an area of academics before and after COVID-19. Research relating to COVID-19 has varied, studying correlations and effects on factors such as mental health and relationships. Researchers and educators projected various degrees of learning loss, and while some studies have revealed some loss, others have revealed little to no change. Further research is needed to continue developing researchers’ and educators’ understanding of how COVID-19 and the shift to online learning may have been related to learning and academics of young adolescents. This study sought to further the field of development and provide more understanding by examining how IOWA Test scores may have differed before and after school closure during COVID-19 in adolescents in a private school setting. This study compared IOWA Test scores of a cohort of students from before and after the shutdown of a private school due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The study utilized archival data of the 2019-2020 sixth-grade cohort two years before and after the shutdown of schools. Multiple ANOVA tests and univariate analyses were conducted to examine the data; a Friedman test statistic and a Wilcoxon signed-rank test were used for the language total because it did not meet tests of normality. The results of each test were significant. There was a difference in test scores before and after the shutdown of schools from COVID-19. The means of each set of scores increased each year; however, the significance of this increase would need to be explored in future study

Impacts of Positive Childhood Experiences That Foster Resilience in Adults With Childhood Trauma a Qualitative Case Study

    Get PDF
In today’s rapidly evolving environment, adolescents face increasingly complex challenges to their health and well-being. A significant contributor to these challenges is exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), which have been linked to long-term negative outcomes in physical, emotional, and psychological health. The pervasive impact of ACEs highlights the urgent need to explore protective mechanisms that can buffer against these adverse effects. Positive childhood experiences (PCEs) have emerged as a promising counterbalance, offering supportive and nurturing conditions that enhance resilience and promote healthier developmental trajectories. This qualitative case study explored the specific types of PCEs that foster resilience in individuals who have experienced childhood trauma. Through in-depth interviews with adult participants, several key themes emerged: the importance of nurturing relationships with parents or caregivers, supportive community environments (including schools and churches), consistent emotional support, access to structured extracurricular activities, and internal traits such as perseverance and faith. Participants described how these factors contributed to their capacity to cope with early adversity, maintain mental health, and pursue personal goals despite past trauma. The study also revealed that participants internalized positive messages from early role models and consistently relied on faith-based coping strategies, personal determination, and access to mentors and safe spaces as central to their resilience. These findings illustrate how PCEs can mitigate the psychological toll of ACEs and foster lasting emotional strength and stability. Findings from this study contribute to the growing body of knowledge surrounding resilience theory and trauma-informed care
