Elucidating the Species Limits and Range Boundaries of the African Yellow House Bats, Genus \u3cem\u3eScotophilus\u3c/em\u3e
Many of Kenya’s vesper bat species (Vespertilionidae) are weakly distinguished from one another, resulting in uncertainty with field and museum identification. These complexities set up Scotophilus as a case study for practical application of the Biological, Morphological, and Phylogenetic Species Concepts. Clear understanding of geographic variation is needed to apply currently available species names and, where needed, to propose new names. I analyzed variation in cranial morphology using geometric morphometric analysis and quantified pelage color variation in the African Yellow house bat genus Scotophilus to examine species limits and morphological overlap among populations. These analyses identify diagnostic characters and range boundaries for these species and clarify the application of existing names to Kenyan bats. The geometric morphometric and pelage analyses conducted here are a first step in untangling Scotophilus taxonomy, although more studies are needed to classify taxa sufficiently and accurately
RoSCAs: Bridging the Gap Between Moneylenders and Moneyguards
People in over 70 countries participate in rotating savings and credit associations (RoSCAs) to avoid high-cost informal financial services. Moneylenders in Bangaldesh, India, Malaysia, Nepal, and the Philippines can be exploitive, charging annual interest rates sometimes exceeding 1000 percent. Moneyguards in Ghana will hold a person\u27s savings; however, savers often pay a fee as high as ten percent of the value of their savings. With nearly two billion people lacking access to formal banking services, RoSCAs provide households and entrepreneurs with an low-cost opportunity to save and borrow within their community
How American Values Emerge Through Walt Whitman\u27s Song of Myself
Philosophers and outside observers of American life, such as Tocqueville, believe American literature and art is incapable of presenting a higher intellect; however, Tocqueville and other outsiders failed to witness America\u27s ability to encompass its own values in varied forms during the 19th century. One specific instance of this progressive movement is Walt Whitman\u27s poem, Song of Myself, and its appeal to all realms of American society because of his capability to embrace Emersonian concepts. Thus, Whitman\u27s work is based on the ideas and transcendentalist techniques Ralph Waldo Emerson established in American literature, such as becoming a representative voice for the people by connecting spiritually and philosophically to nature, directly relating to the readers through building up a sense of ego, and establishing a universal presence and ability to transcend even death. Through these ideas, Whitman becomes the pinnacle of an American representative poet and conveys the truest and most democratic values of the nation, allowing him to live on into today and simply be found under any reader\u27s boot-soles
Quality or quantity? The effect of dietary composition on nutritional-signaling in Drosophila larvae
A major regulator of body size in animals is developmental nutrition, which acts through the insulin- and TOR-signaling pathways to regulate growth rate and duration. Whilst we know much about how dietary quantity affects body size and insulin-signaling, we know very little about the impact of diet quality. Here we compare and contrast the effect of changes in dietary caloric value versus protein-to-carbohydrate ratio on the genetic mechanisms that regulate body size in Drosophila melanogaster. We reared flies from first to third larval instar on one of 24 diets that varied in their concentration and ratio of proteins and carbohydrates, and measured the expression of genes that activate or are activated by the insulin- and TOR-signaling pathways. Our data indicate that activity of the insulin- and TOR-signaling pathways responds primarily to changes in protein level but not to changes in carbohydrate level. These data suggest that diet quality impacts body size principally through changes in the quantity of a single macronutrient: protein

Ionothermal Synthesis and Characterization of Two New Iron Thiophosphates
Two new iron thiophosphate anions, [Fe(P2S8)2]2– and [FeP7S16]–, were synthesized in two different ionic liquids. These new anions have different iron to phosphorous to sulfur ratios than any known compounds with these same elements. The [Fe(P2S8)2]2– anion is very similar to a nickel-containing anion previously prepared in our laboratory, but the [FeP7S16]– anion is entirely new and not completely resolved. Although it is unlikely these compounds have commercial application, the implications of this basic research to renewable energy will be discussed
