Toll-Like Receptor 2 Dependent Signaling of Low Molecular Weight Hyaluronan Upregulates T-Helper 17 Differentiation and Promotes the Expression of Hyaluronidase 2
Immune cells have the capacity to differentiate and proliferate after stimulation through pattern recognition receptors (PRRs). In the case of potentially autoreactive T-cells, signaling from self molecules through PRRs can stimulate these cells to attack otherwise healthy tissue leading to autoinflammatory diseases such as multiple sclerosis. One self molecule that may induce this effect is hyaluronan, a structural polysaccharide found in the extracellular matrix. We initially hypothesized that low molecular weight hyaluronan, indicative of injury, could signal through toll-like receptor 2, a PRR, to upregulate Th17 cell differentiation and proliferation. Naïve CD4+ murine T-cells were isolated and exposed to low and high molecular weight hyaluronan to determine the molecule’s effect. Surprisingly, our results showed evidence for both hyaluronan and hyaluronidase II in upregulating T-helper 17 cell differentiation and proliferation. Further research is necessary to describe the mechanism for this effect, as well as to establish its physiological relevance
Predicting Academic Achievement, Measured by GPA
When considering the GPA of Lake Forest College students, it is important to consider the contributing factors of it. Students invest a lot of money into college and it is important to determine whether students can do well academically. Does the student’s financial background or financial aid package influence the student’s academic performance? Looking at Lake Forest College students\u27 high school GPAs, test scores, and other financial variables, this thesis attempts to model the contributing factors to academic achievement. It is found that parent income is not significant to academic performance, but scholarships, grants, and loans are statistically significant when predicting GPA. These financial aid variables negatively affect GPA on average. High school GPA and ACT test scores remain the most significant factors when predicting college GPA. As students take more college credits, they begin to make choices that will maximize their GPA
Abandonment, Ruination, and Deterioration: Archaeology of Barat College of the Sacred Heart Cemetery
How can the demolition of a cultural landscape affect nearby sites and influence our views of ruins and abandonment? Based on an archaeological survey of the ruins of Barat College in Lake Forest, findings show the material culture at the site of the College’s Sacred Heart Cemetery suggest the cemetery has fallen into the processes of forgetting, ruination, and deterioration. We can see how historical-cultural information usually present in cemeteries becomes lost as maintenance is forsaken, turning cemeteries into relics in their own right. Not all cemeteries are places of commemoration and remembrance, some become spaces of abandonment and decay
Mementoes and Transitional Objects in Lake Forest College Dormitories
Matriculation at Lake Forest College is a form of displacement. Students transport their culture from home through the medium of objects; some to be used for personal comfort, some imbued with emotion, cultural significance and personal identity. In the dormitories, the resident becomes the artist, and the object becomes the material part of the person. Investigation was applied to three dormitory dwellings by means of a survey and a photographic mapping of all objects in each room. Artifacts were subdivided into two major groups, utilitarian and gonfalon (banners). This analysis provides a greater understanding of the process of identity creation
