Ionothermal Syntheses and Characterization of Three Iron Thiophosphates

Degradation of SLO-1 BK channels in \u3cem\u3eC. elegans\u3c/em\u3e
SLO-1 is a large conductance potassium channel which when inhibited in C. elegans results in complete ethanol resistance. The protein ERG-28 is responsible for transporting SLO-1 from the endoplasmic reticulum to the golgi apparatus in C. elegans. erg-28 mutants show greatly reduced SLO-1 signaling. We therefore hypothesize that SLO-1 undergoes ER associated degradation via the ubiquitin-proteasome system. We screen for ubiquitin ligase responsible for the degradation of the SLO-1 channel by performing fluorescent microscopy and behavioral studies in C. elegans. The mutants for this ubiquitin ligase showed both increased fluorescence and sensitivity to ethanol. In order to better elucidate the erg-28 and slo-1 pathways we also performed mutagenesis tests on C. elegans with MCHERRY tagged ERG-28. We created multiple mutants expressing a change in fluorescence. These experiments identify different molecules involved SLO-1 signaling pathway
Twentieth-Century Transformations of Medieval Hagiography: Hermann Hesse’s Creation of a Modern Saint in \u3cem\u3ePeter Camenzind\u3c/em\u3e and \u3cem\u3eNarcissus and Goldmund\u3c/em\u3e
This thesis aims to examine Hermann Hesse’s creation of the modern saint, a twentieth-century contribution to the hagiographical tradition. I assert Hesse’s Swabian Pietist upbringing inspired a unique lens for his refashioning of the Middle Ages, which Hesse establishes in his first novel, Peter Camenzind, with the protagonist Peter. Through Hesse’s hagiographical lens, I explore the emergence and evolution of Hesse’s modern saint who is shaped by Hesse’s quest to resolve his lifelong internal conflict between art and religion. In Hesse’s later novel, Narcissus and Goldmund, he finalizes his spiritual experiment with the modern saint who unifies sensuality and spirituality a figure whom Hesse represents with Goldmund. Whether this modern saint is merely an ideal, or if he is possibly a figure that can contribute to the spiritual life of the everyday individual will be answered in the conclusion of this thesis

Revolutions: A Collaboration
Revolutions is a unique collaboration between poet John Matthias, printmaker Jean Dibble, and critic Robert Archambeau. Two poetic sequences by Matthias, “The HIJ” and “After Five Words Englished from the Russian” generate, first, a corresponding sequence of poster-poems by Dibble and, second, a series of “free commentaries” by Archambeau. “The HIJ,” emerging initially from an alphabetical game using chance operations in the Dictionary, eventually produces something of a character and a narrative, both of which are probed by the artist and commentator. The “Five Words” are translated from Russian poet Osip Mandelstam’s “He Who Finds a Horseshoe.” Again, the poster-poems enlarge on the text and the commentaries complete a sequence of revolutions without resolutions.https://publications.lakeforest.edu/faculty_books/1008/thumbnail.jp
Inelastic Collapse: Simple Physics Leads to Infinite Collisions
In general physics courses, students study collisions between two objects. In every such collision total momentum is conserved. In inelastic collisions, the kinetic energy is not conserved. The loss of kinetic energy is characterized by the coefficient of restitution. In systems with more than two particles, there is the possibility of multiple collisions, each one governed by the same laws learned in general physics. Surprisingly, there exist simple model systems which experience an infinite number of collisions in a finite time. This phenomenon is known as inelastic collapse. This thesis project considers systems of four point particles moving in one dimension with inelastic collisions between the particles. We will present results of computer simulations and analytical work to determine the initial conditions and coefficient of restitution necessary for inelastic collapse in these systems
Exploring the Gender Gap in Art Museums
This article explores the gender gap in art museums around the world to find out if discrimination exists in the field. It particularly focuses on the gender of the artist at the most highly attended independent exhibitions, using a dataset compiled by The Art Newspaper. In addition to assessing the number of male and female exhibitions, and the daily attendance based on gender, this paper utilizes county demographic infromation from around the United States collected by the Census Bureau to discuss the potential impact of area demographics on the gender of the artist chosen to display his or her artwork. This paper confirms that among the most popular exhibitions there are more male than female art exhibitions throughout the world. None of the demographics associate with gender of the artists of the exhibition; given this finding, it seems that the gender gap is not market driven and discrimination may exist in the art industry. To further explain this hypothesis, more studies on the gender gap need to be undertaken. Perhaps the demographics and rationale of the museum boards can explain the gender gap in the art industry
