Creating an On-line Training Module
Tutor training (like corporate training) can be expensive and personnel intensive. On-line tools can help make training both efficient and more effective. Most on-line training modules cannot be applied to complex interactions-such as tutoring writing--effectively without the use of video, voiceovers, and manipulation of documents. Working with another experienced Writing Center tutor, I created a multi-faceted video training system to supplement the current training program in the Writing Center. Jane Addams - Peace, War, and World Order: A Web-based Timeline
Jane Addams is best known for her life-long commitment to improving the lives of poor, immigrant communities in Chicago. She is much less known for what she referred to as her international “peace advocacy.” Over the past year, we designed and constructed the “Jane Addams: Peace, War, and World Order” web page. This page draws from a wide variety of primary and secondary sources on Addams’ pacifist beliefs, opposition to World War I, and vision of a post-war international order. It is a one-of-a-kind portal for students and scholars interested in Addams’ and her ideas about and activities in the realm of international relations
Emerging Adulthood: Expectations of Friendship in Post-Collegiate Life
From the time we are very young, we learn to live in age-grouped settings where making friends is built into the structure. As we go through the transition into adulthood, we become more independent of our peers, and we are expected to use what we learned in childhood to guide us in this new social context. This presentation describes my study of Lake Forest College students\u27 expectations of friendship in post-collegiate life. My study revealed a set of contradictory ideas about adult life, implying that students fear that the unspoken rules of friendship will no longer apply after college
Simulation of Wealth Management Strategies
The study follows the role of a wealth manager by mimicking and executing three portfolio scenarios for three hypothetical clients with different time horizons. The first client being a young individual right out of med school, the second is a female exec in the age range of 45-50 years and the third is a 70 year old individual looking to leave behind a legacy. The study utilizes different investment management strategies to achieve the goals of each individual client. The three portfolios intend to analyze and execute wealth strategies suited to be beneficial for each client
Criminalization of Undocumented Immigrants — Little Village, Chicago
This senior thesis focuses on the criminalization of undocumented immigrants in Little Village, Chicago. This issue is more commonly known as crimmigration, which is a new kind of law that has recently emerged. I explore the ways in which the criminal system and the immigration system have become dependent on each other. My work seeks to bring light to the criminalization issues Little Village faces. By partnering with organizations within the community, I conducted 35 surveys to analyze the data on how undocumented immigrants are treated by the police or by border patrol. I believe that undocumented immigrants in Little Village, Chicago are going to experience more criminalization or mistreatment by border patrol or police. My end goal is to find out how individuals in Little village have been impacted by crimmigration

Fragmentation of previously intact habits can result in local extinction, genetic drift and inbreeding depression. One way to restore populations affected by habitat fragmentation is to augment populations with genetic material from nearby locations I examined the fitness consequences of genetic augmentation of a rare Aster species, Eurybia furcata
Localization Mechanism of Telomerase in Aspergillus nidulans
Telomeres are DNA-protein complexes at the ends of chromosomes that protect the termini from degradation and fusion. The enzyme complex, telomerase, consists of the TERT (telomerase reverse transcriptase) and the TER (telomerase RNA), and maintains the length of telomeres. Our lab has been studying where in the cell these two components assemble in Aspergillus nidulans, a filamentous fungus that can exhibit a multi-nucleate state known as heterokaryon. Preliminary evidence using heterokaryons suggests that TER does not leave the nucleus. I am now studying where TERT localizes by knocking out the gene. To accomplish this, I amplified TERT left and right DNA flanking fragments and fused them with a genetic marker in between. I will use this genetic marker to transform A. nidulans and create a TERT knockout strain. By analyzing the obtained knockout strain, I hope to gain insight into the localization mechanism of TERT in A. nidulans, and to compare this to the localization of TER. These studies will help reveal how the components of this essential protein complex find each other and are maintained
